What do people do over the summer holidays? Last little while has been spent isolating and doing DIY around the house, and everything seems super expensive. Looking at either camping for a few days or maybe day trips between Christmas and NY. Would appreciate any suggestions thanks

Hi we’re a young family of 4 based in Auckland, so could probably do a North Island road trip but would need to stop and stay the night frequently
camping at DOC owned parks/beaches was my go to when I was a teen fresh out of high school
Family of 4 here as well, two young kids. We usually just pack a picnic and do day trips out to a beach somewhere. I’m in Auckland (North) and surrounded by beaches so we go frequently but some favs are - Wenderholm, Shakespear, Tawharanui, Pakiri. They’re regional parks so often have campgrounds there as well, but pretty sure they get quite busy over summer.
Mangawhai is another great town to visit/stay. Nice beaches and there’s an Activity Zone for the kids that’s pretty neat.
If you are nice beaches and bush walks Golden Bay is where its at!
Its such a shame that travelling to a different island is about as much as traveling to another country!
