  • Traditionally been intel cpu user but went ryzen for my most recent build. Found them good value for money and packed more single core punch, which turned out to be more useful for likes of video editing. Ran cool with low power draw too.

    • I found exactly the opposite. I think 12th gen intel single core is very strong no?

      • Double checked and I'm running the AMD Ryzen 7 5800 8-Core Processor 3.40 GHz, and think it's pretty smooth. Handled everything I've thrown at it on Windows 11 with no problems.

        • I was talking about the single core performance of intel vs ryzen. And it's indeed that I was right. I happen to know 12 gen intel is a far bigger jump than previous generations, including single-core performance being a major contributing factor. Up until 12 gen, there wasn't much generational improvement going on with intel

          • @Bill: Yep, but of course new CPU prices, which isn’t necessarily the hunting ground is Choice Cheapies.

These units are solid for the time and price.

    • yea i missed the train, been with my coffee lake for 5 years now, want to do one last upgrade while im on ddr4 ram since prices have gone up again.

    • Make sure you shop around. Some of these CPUs are banger deals and some are still cheaper elsewhere (PBTech).
The real shame is the lack of motherboards. ITX especially.

  • 5600 was $209 earlier in the week at CL, definitely some good prices at the moment on AM4 CPU's.

I've been looking for a gaming PC to buy. Just wondering if it's a good idea to buy component by component as they go on sale or buy the whole unit when they are on sale. any thoughts? thanks

    • How comfortable are you with putting a PC together? And knowing the compatibility of parts.

      • I can assemble. I've done a few in the past

    • +1

I did that with mine. In brackets rough savings.
      Case (70), psu (50)
      Gpu (100).
      Then mobo (10) cpu (10)
      Then ram (40)

I prefer building my own over pre-made just because I enjoy doing it and that it is cheaper overall as I can skimp on some costs where it's realistic to do so.

This was back when 5600x was $550 though.
I didn't need ssd or hdd, also didn't need windows.
Very few combo deals lately. Just remember shipping costs, unless pickup / free shipping.

I did one earlier this year and I'd like to think I saved a lot. This is at the cost of A LOT of time, and it wasn't even for me.

If I had gotten a minimum wage job instead of the time spent, I would be way in the negative. You of course don't need to spend so much time, but sales generally aren't a good indicator of a good price unless you know what you are looking for.

Pricing has been a little weird lately for components as even though GPU prices are on their way to crash, the nzd is heavily impacting other components. For example, I picked up a 12400 for $304 around launch and now it's hovering at around $390.

Assembly and compatibility is really easy, all the information is on the internet, but pcpartpicker is a very useful tool to double check.

The problem with prebuilts are the unseen components. The mobo, psu, storage, ram are all susceptible to using bad components. So while it might seem more expensive to build it yourself, just looking at the specs isn't a good way of comparing apples to oranges, or in this case, lemons.

One of the main savings to be made with building yourself is with windows. If you don't have to pay for that, you'll automatically be around $100 ahead.

I am thinking the same. I think i ll probably go component by component over sometime then assemble it myself by YouTube tutorials

    • thanks for sharing your experiences. easy decision. ordered one :-)
