8-10kg Box of Swedish Pork Ribs $5.20/kg @ Gilmours (Requires Membership)

220

This has actually been running for a few weeks now. Have now bought 2 boxes.

Requires a Gilmours membership which is free if you have a registered business, or $99 once for personal shoppers. Seeing as Costco is $60/year this is a better deal in the long run.

For the most part, Gilmours is pretty mediocre on the deals compared to supermarkets, but they're good for very certain things (like 5KG bags of frozen chips, and random bulk meat deals like this one, eg it's not a rare thing to get boneless pork for like $5-6 per KG, I buy a lot of it for making sausages and tonkatsu).

Pork ribs everywhere else starts around the $12/kg mark.

Each box appears to be three full racks, and depending on how gluttonous you're feeling, half a rack is normally good for 2-3 people.

  • Where do you normally get the flyer? so we can check deals. Like you mentioned the price in-store is very mediocre. Would like to subscribe special deals and check what is on special.

  • why does it say requires membership, cant u just walk into a store and get the deals? theres a gilmours store 1hr from me

Ive walked in and bought stuff without membership, is it just at the grace of the checkout operator?
Also half a rack is 1 portion in my household 😀

    • Membership is required although I have seen the staff put through customers that wandered into Gilmours, thought it was a regular supermarket and were paying cash for a few items.

Now new accounts are via the Stocard app instead of the traditional card.

  • The one in Tauranga doesn’t require membership, atleast last month when I visited

You don't need the physical card to shop in store, just the card number (unless you want to buy alcohol). So if you know someone with a card, ask if you can use their card number, save it on your phone and Bob's your uncle.

I got a card during the first lockdown when memberships were free for everyone.

  • I have been pan frying my boneless pork from gilmours… but tonkatsu, thats an idea! thanks OP

    • I have yet to have a store bought tonkatsu in NZ that's any good. I went to an izakaya in Kagoshima and got it and he pulled out a huge slab of meat (black pork) and made it from scratch in front of us in about 20 minutes and it was incredible.

So I now follow that recipe and it's 1000x better than anything I have had in NZ, they all use cuts too thin, bread instead of a light coat and don't do a 160 then 190 double fry. Either a 190 twice, or only a single 190.

It doesn't take long to make, and it's not hard to make well, but no one bothers here.

  • I have my own card but do not have a business. The first time I went to GIlmours I asked at the info desk how I can show without a card and the lady told me they can issue me a temporary number for my visit. So I was able to purchase things without issue.
The next time I asked at the info counter if i could get a membership card without having a business and the lady said sure and helped me navigate the store ipad registration, as it asks you to enter business info. I have a card. But like other people have mentioned you can use someone elses card - you can get the Stocard app and load someones card number and your set forever.

Maybe we can get a Choice Cheapies account?

  • Anyone know how to go about getting the personal shopper account and if it’s available online? Or would I be better off asking?
