[Backorder] Valve Steam Deck 256GB $1399 / 512GB $1599 (OOS) + Shipping ($0 with Primate, Stock Arriving Dec 16) @ Mighty Ape

220

Backorder for both the 256GB and 512GB Steam Decks are on Mighty Ape and arrive on the 16th December.

64GB $1199 https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/valve-steam-deck-64gb/36…

[OUT OF STOCK] - 512GB ($1599 NZD) https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/valve-steam-deck-512gb/3…

Also includes a free Gorilla Gaming NZ/AU USB C plug with 3M USB C cable so you won't need a international power adapter with both models.

The 64GB isn't available for purchase here, but it may be worth looking at importing one directly from Valve, as upgrading them with a 2230 SSD is fairly easy to do with plenty of tutorials available online.

PSA: However be very selective with which model you pick as according Valve, picking the incorrect model of 2230 M.2 can result in more power consumption which can cause overheating, reduced battery life, WiFi and Bluetooth Inference. Thus shorting the life of your Steam deck. A single sided 2230 SSD is recommended as some can have double sided NAND packages. So please, do this at your own risk. According to guys on reddit it doesn't seem to make much of a difference so your mileage may vary -

A decent deal considering trying import it directly from Valve is expensive with Youshop as it's about $1000 NZD ($649 USD) for the 512GB Deck + $330 NZD GST/Youshop Freight + goods clearance fees (around $174).

Since the 256GB is under $1000 NZD when importing from overseas however, it may be worth importing as it is $825 for the 256GB ($529 USD) + $225.68 NZD GST/Youshop Freight (no extra fees).

You can import it directly from Valve supposedly by making US Steam account via a VPN, then using your NZ account to gift enough Steam credit to the US account (Estimated around 64GB - $620, 256GB - $825, 512GB - $1000) , then sending to the Youshop address, pay the fees and they send it to you.

Both are expensive systems but I have been waiting to buy one and didn't really want to go through hoops to get one from overseas or pay exorbitant amounts on Trademe as a few people are selling them there. It's also nice to have a local place where you can return with a warranty without having to pay a lot to return overseas. Yes it is very expensive but it serves different purpose from a gaming laptop as you can't hold one of those directly your hands with a inbuilt controller and play on public transport without it being too bulky (even though it is very bulky lol).

Some other places you can get it are eBay, Expansys, Trademe, Aliexpress but I believe somewhere local is better in case you had to send back for any reason.

Expansys seems to have it much cheaper inc GST however I would imagine you would have to pay goods clearance fees since most of them are over $1000 NZD.

  • How about getting 64gb version, then upgrading SSD or getting SD card?

    • +1

That's definitely a good option, I considered it but decided not to since the 512GB has an Anti-glare etched glass screen. But if you don't care about that, you can get 512GB 2242 SSDs for reasonably affordable online and there are plenty of tutorials showing you how to change it out. Unfortunately Mighty ape is not selling the 64GB version but you can do the trick I mentioned to get it directly from Valve or you can try your luck on Trademe, eBay etc. Also getting a big SD Card is ideal as Steam games can take a lot of space, load times on a lot of games seem to work well with genuine SD cards but might be worth getting ones with slightly better write/read speeds.

      • +1

You'll want a 2230 SSD instead of 2242, flying off to Singapore in couple of days and will be sourcing one there.

        • Yeah sorry, 2230 is what I meant.

        • could you please bring one for me? =)

  • +5

This came far more expensive than I was expecting. Pass.

  • +1

I imported one a few months ago. The Wise card does not work however to can give digital gift cards to friends on steam, so you can use your NZ debit card on your NZ steam account to give a gift to your US steam account. Also it was very easy to upgrade the SSD so 64gb is the way to go.

    • can you share what ssd you got?

  • +2

Getting a 64GB ended up costing me about $1000 landed with currency conversion / CA tax and DHL fees so these are pretty solid prices

  • +3

at that price rather get a gaming laptop

    • +1

Totally, and they're so much more useful. You can get one with a RTX 3060 at that price, used on Trademe.

First timers should get a Switch instead, and see if the form factor really suits your lifestyle. If not then you're going to have major buyer's remorse with a $1600 Steam Deck.

      • +2

True first timers should use their phone with steam link/moonlight/xbox app (gamepass), a bluetooth controller (xbox/playstation/other) and a phone/controller clip ($5 from trademe) and see if that suits their lifestyle. Next step up is a Razer Kishi with your phone.

    • +1

Eh they are completely different products for different purposes.

  • +1

when this becomes affordable i will get one. it will be a great emulator for ps3 and switch games.

  • I think there's something wrong in you fee calculation. There should be no import duties on a Steam Deck, what item type are you choosing? Whether it's a gaming console or a computer/tablet, there are no duties on either. There is a 5% rate ont toys, but it's hard to imagine a Steam Deck would be classified as a toy instead of a console or computer/tablet. Remember NZ eliminated many import duties with the Rogernomics reforms. (And since we don't produce electronics in any significant quantity, import duties on electronics seem a bit naff anyway.)

Since it's over $1000, you will have to pay the IETF+BSL which is $59.48. Also Youshop forces you to use their brokerage service for $63.25. There's a high value surcharge I believe for insurance etc of $6. You'll also have to pay the GST but you pay that whatever the amount and you've included that separately. Also I'm fairly sure you will have to pay the $46 NZ Customs tariff classification fee to Youshop's brokerage service if your order is $400-$1000 i.e. any Steamdeck besides the 512 GB which might be over $1000. Like their brokerage service when over $1000 I don't think you can get out of it.

    • Yeah thanks for clarifying, I’ve never ordered something from overseas over $1000 and going on the Custom website they didn’t explain it very well. I asked my dad but since he ordered a toy model over $1000 that makes a lot of sense now.

  • Can also have a look at Ayaneo 2. More powerful than Steamdeck and has been deviewed by dave2d on youtube. He's pretty good when it comes to tech reviews, imo

    • +2

      Outrageous price tho…

  • +1

The iPad that’s $599 in the US is $1200 here - so I think anyone thinking this was gonna be a cheap way to game is sadly mistaken.

What your buying into is the mobile form factor - this is indefinitely easier to pull out on the train or your lunch break at work than a full gaming laptop.

  • +2

Buying from mightyape also means you get a NZ warranty so great!

  • +3

Really want one but too pricey still :(
