Flights seem to be so expensive now then even what they were last year. I have a few family things I need to get too over the next few months and even need to bring my 4 kids Ekk. What’s everyone thinking? Sales will come soon or the high prices are here to stay for the first half of the year?
Flights to Melb and Sydney

Your only option for cheap stuff is Jetstar. And they have sales pretty often.
Can join their club and you get a few days before everyone else as well.
I know people shit on Jetstar a bunch.. but I have flown with them multiple times to Aussie over the last few months (with kids) and they have been awesome every time.
For Sydney, Airasia is probably the cheapest option? You do need to buy a baggage and/or seat etc, but still around 188 NZD for one way to Sydney seems pretty good value.
Sydney seems to be cheaper than Melbourne due to the extra competition (Air Asia X and LATAM are often the cheapest on that route). Have a look at Google Flights and play with dates. Agree with CheapAzChips - book directly with the airline.
jetstar's boxing day sale was around $450 return to sydney a few months out
Thanks everyone for your tips. Didn’t know about google flights which helped me book most of my flights . Cheers
Keep an eye out, there are still some deals to be had. We managed to get return flights AKL-SYD for around $450pp plus bags on Jetstar in March.
Be very careful (read: don't do it!) booking through offshore third party sites like mytrip.com (and there are a ton of them) - they may offer cheaper fares but they will nail you with all sorts of hefty fees to make/confirm changes, even if the airline was the one to initiate the change, eg. Cancelled/delayed flights etc. Because you're booking through a third party the airline won't want to talk to you so you're basically forced to cough up, forego the fare, or (thankfully, in our case) try ignoring repeated requests for money and just turn up at the airport and hope that the front desk staff are more accommodating!
Speaking from experience, online reviews will confirm this.
