Kia Ora,
I'm planning short trip to Aus in March. Was wondering if anyone previously optimised the TRS on Aus visit. What sort of items worth buying in Aus?Thank you.

Oh, and a minimum of $300 spend per retailer… Can be spread over multiple visits
go early to the airport, you could be waiting in the TRS line for over an hour.
one time the amount refunded didn't match. Paperwork worked out so called my bank and they said the TRS merchant charged a fee. Not sure what the % of the fee is.
Absolutely zero issues and about 2 minute process at Brisbane airport, but we followed all instructions to the t and submitted the application via the website prior the visit. So it was literally show the goods and say good bye.
No queue at Sydney airport in early January 2023 (peak travel period, flights were full). Had submitted form on website in advance.
In response to your query about what sort of items are worth buying in Australia; most things. Even after accounting for foreign exchange, I struggle to think of anything other than fish and chips that is cheaper here. Have a look through Ozbargain for ideas - for instance the cost of the new Samsung S23 Ultra was about $500 cheaper there at launch after various deals/coupons.
Medicines are GST free there so stock up if there are any pharmacy, non-script medicines you use, even sunscreen or tampons. You won't even need to go through TRS for them or reach the $300 TRS threshold.
I brought back a F&P wall oven as check-in luggage and claimed TRS and let me into NZ withot needing to pay GST. :)
Note have to declare items over $700 on customs form
Havent been to Aus since COVID but have brought heaps of things back before that
You can definitely bring back oversized items from Brisbane at least, details below. I've brought back AV amps in the past, checked them in.

If your purchase is packed in luggage you intend to check:
You should make your way to the Australian Border Force Client Services Office, located on Level 1 of the International Terminal. You will need to do this before you check your luggage for your flight.
From memory its about 9%. One receipt.. minimum spend $300
Go to the airport. Ask for trs. And they put it back to the original payment method.
Most of this information is incorrect. Aus GST is 10%. Can be multiple receipts. $300 minimum spend from one retailer (can be on multiple receipts) is correct. Go to their website and fill in the forms before going to the airport. And they won't put it on the original payment method. They'll ask for your credit card to simply put money on that irrelevant of what you used to purchase it. But instead of elaborating, best to point to the source: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…
Thanks, Detective pichachu. Your information was totally different from what i gave. Thanks for saving this world.
No idea on the items, but be aware that if you are claiming items in your checked luggage that they need to be sighted by border farce before you check your bags in. Not sure which airport you're flying out of but finding their little office is a mission.
There's an app that you can pre enter all our your purchases in for easy submission
