Went to TWH Riccarton to pick up my orders yesterday and saw the new fruits and veggies area by the entrance. The prices are not amazing but still ok. $5 for 1.5kg
brown onions, 1.5kg carrots, etc. Not sure if they are doing this now for every store?
The Warehouse started selling fruits and veggies?

Passing through Timaru, I spotted the fruit & veg today. $2 for a "bunch of bananas" seemed to equate to three small bananas, which didn't feel very bargainrific. I get that they want to do the supermarket thing (again), but it felt a little half-arsed.
Given that bananas are currently edging closer to $4/kg and are currently limited to 2kg at my local, it's not surprising. In fact I was there the other night and there were NO bananas. Not even a place set aside for them, the usual place was taken up by Bok Choy or something.
If they can't get an edge on pricing then what on earth is the point of doing this?
One would imagine that it'd be the same as their old $4 butter blocks or their $1 period products, a loss leader that gets you in the door, as you say there's no reason for them to compete if they're not price competitive. TWG might decide to lay off a few hundred more staff and fund some upright fridges to reduce waste?
(Now that's an ethical question haha)
Not sure about the fridges - it would have to depend on the resources consumed in producing them, plus the running costs, against the value of the goods getting thrown out. Might or might not be a good idea - couldn't say without a lot more info.
That's what I'm getting at though. The Warehouse isn't offering a good deal, they have simply started selling produce
