  • Great deal! Everyone should jump on board for this unit here. I use a similar specs for my TV.

    • Does it handle large resolution well when plugged onto the TV?

      • +1

I have 1080 native on my tv, not an issue =)

  • Sweet ! With a bit of extra wheeling/dealing, managed to get this instore for $50, with full warranty etc. Nice pickup. Thanks kiwijunglist.

      Details?

    • +1

It says "not sold in store" - please do tell how you get it for $50!

      • +2

Says not sold in stores, yes. Called up a store and checked on stock in regional stores. Most only had 1-3 left. They offered it up for the online price for store pickup.

I checked in with manager of one store, after having trouble getting floor staff on the phone. He walked down himself, found the last one, which had been opened, though intact. He offered it to hold it for me for $50 (as shop soiled), with full warranty etc. So, sweet deal.

Actually even sweeter as I'll use $30 worth of gift cards bought at $25, so effectively $45.

I gather the discounted prices is because they've got a new line with Windows 10 installed, so wanting to get rid of the Windows 8.1 models. Happy enough with Win 8.1 but suspect you'd get a free upgrade anyway if you so wanted to.

Old adage of wheeling/dealing: Always Ask, even if the fine print says 'no'. Never know your luck !

        • After the site ran out of stock I decided to try your method and rang almost all the stores in Auckland, and Newmarket was prepared to sell me their display model for $72 with full warranty. They told me that 20% off is the normal discount for ex-display models, but they could only sell them if it's on clearance. Silverdale also has one in stock but it's a 'second' with no cables, no discount and no warranty.

Unfortunately I got a $65 parking ticket while at the Newmarket store (Apparently it's common occurrence at that store) so I'm $47 worse off. Oh well.

        • @avantime: Sorry to hear about the parking ticket. Sucks big time. Re strategic bargaining, helps to get a little 'Bro-time' with the manager first if possible. They've got the ultimate say in what the discount is. Also, any one store should have been able to check their computer and tell you the stock levels at all the other stores. Though you need to find a friendly staffer who is prepared to take the time to check. Better luck next time Avantime

@Jay: That's what I did. Most stores were showing 1 (With Birkenhead and Takanini showing 2, but Takanini actually has none and Birkenhead's 2 are both damaged) but some do not want to sell their display stock because it wasn't clear to them that it was on clearance, with some telling me to place a raincheck via something called 'endless aisle'. One staff told me to contact individual stores because that 1 item may be a damaged/returned unit.

At the Silverdale store the staff at the entertainment counter refused to call the manager. (I was there in person because I was driving past)

        • @avantime:

sorry to hear about the parking fine. this happens to me very often sadly.. But yes, it was a good deal on the tablet. I'm sure you'll make full use of it.

  • Thanks

  • Here are the Amazon reviews, only 3 stars though.

I should say i reposted from gpforums tech deals thread.

  • Was tossing up whether to get one of these or not! You guys have made the decision easier for me :P

For future reference though - for those who have used both android and win 8.1 (tablet usage) platforms - what did you think? I've used android exclusively up until now and have never used the "apps" on my conventional desktop/laptop environments. I'm a bit concerned with storage space on these devices too, seems to be a bit lacking on the 16gb models. I'm also struggling to see what use i'd get out of windows tablets.

Interested to hear the opinions of those who bought one of these in the coming days when they arrive. Excellent deal OP.

Re storage space. From a very detailed review on Amazon:

"To free up disk space, I removed lots of apps I did not need (magazines, sports etc) which can be accessed directly via the browser. Also, make sure you do a major disk cleanup after installing all the Windows 8.1 and MS Office files updates. And, make sure that in the process you remove all "windows restore and shadow copies", that will free up a ton of space."

for many years, I had used lots of android tablets, apple tablets. I was a fan of android but i hated android as a tablet as i found it useless - not being able to use it productively. Whereas the ipad had heaps of apps that i could utilize. But when I heard tablets with full windows capability, i went crazy for them. Widows tablet all the way - although battery life isn't as great as ipads (which sucks).

Android as a phone, either an ipad or windows tablet as a portable computer. That's my opinion.

  • Managed to get this tablet. Works well, I like it. Comes with screen protector foil, OTG and USB cables, and a USB power adapter with a fixed cable. Works well with Arc Touch mouse. I'm entertaining with an idea of swapping Toshiba 16GB with a 64GB eMMC BGA chip. Anyone done something like that before?
