Tesla Model 3 RWD $59,362, Model Y RWD $64,362 (Price is for Base Trim, Drive Away & After Rebate) @ Tesla

190

Third price drop in 2023 for the Tesla model 3 & model Y. Entry trim model 3 got a $4000 price drop in January, a $2000 drop in February, and now a additional $3,000 price drop.

For the model Y, The entry trim got a $300 drop in January, a $2000 drop in Feb, and now a $3000 drop.

Prices in the title are for the entry trim, delivered to Auckland. Colors other than white cost additional, as do charge cords.

Model 3 is still an expensive car, but the price jump from say a MG ZS EV Long range, or Atto 3 long range, is now just a few thousand. And it now comes in as cheaper than a mazda 6 sedan (only a single high trim level offered at the moment))

[edit] - Marked as expired, as Tesla have increased their prices on for both the model 3 & Y base trim by $500

      still waiting skeleton meme

  • Project Highland (updated Model 3) in production from Q3, so we can expect update model in NZ by Q4?
I am assuming production in Shanghai Giga for the current model has stopped and now they are selling off the remaining stock?
Never the less, good to see price drop from Tesla.

If tesla wasn't owned by musk we might've considered it.

    • +1

His ownership is dwindling. After many recent share sell-offs (probably to try help the twitter fiasco) he is down to 13.4%

    • +1

Just think about all of the benefits that Tesla has over the competitors instead of who owns 13% of a company in my personal opinion.
It’s the safest car in the world, no price on that for family safety. Also free software updates that adds free features, games and additional safety improvements.
All that and more should go above that. Again, in my personal opinion (politely speaking of course).

    Free shipping codes?

    WELCOME5 isn’t working.

    • Lol. This is Tesla. They charge a $1400 delivery fee (included in the price I quoted above), and you still have to pick the car up from the delivery center yourself…

      • Refer a friend code then?

        • Check above :)

  • any cashback deals?

  • I heard rebate was ending soon

    • If National wins, it will.

      • Not getting into politics, but yes that would suck.

    • +2

Unlikely under the current government (But National has said they will scrap it if elected).

What is more likely is some kind or re-balancing. In short, since the Clean Car discount has been introduced, we have been buying way more EV's, and other efficient cars than predicted. So the scheme that was meant to be self funding is note even close.

Unclear what this rebalancing will mean. Could be a reduction in the EV rebate, a hike in high emmisions vehicles fees, or moving the free band downwards (so more vehicles need to pay fees, and less qualify for rebates).

Suzuki NZ put out a big media piece a couple of weeks back, essentially because they are concerned that the government might scrap rebates on all vehicles that don't plug in. This is of course another option for re-balancing.

        • +1

Similar vibe to the suzuki one.

Everybody can see that the clean car discount need's re balancing (as it is paying out too much in rebates vs the number of fees collected), and are speculating how the government might go about it. "Lala says he doesn’t know the details of the update."

Most parties have deduced that the likely options are:
          - Hike fees on high emissions vehicles (Lala speculates that this is unlikely as political parties will still want farmers to vote for them)
          - Rebalance the middle of the scheme, moving the zero fee / rebate band is lower so the likes of a Highlander hybrid (6.2L/100km rated), or non hybrid yaris (5.4L/100km) no longer qualify for a rebate.

Toyota NZ is Obviously unhappy with the first option as they sell a lot of hilux / fortuner / Hiace / Prado / LC70 / LC300, and have a few thirsty performance cars too.

Toyota NZ is unhappy with the second option as they are running very long (sometimes more than a year) wait lists, on some efficient models and their buyers will be quite disappointed if toyota is so slow in delivering their cars that they miss out on a rebate.

And no surprise that the toyota NZ boss is unhappy with the demise of the scrape-age scheme. An outright injection of cash into the industry ($3,500 of government money per car scrapped), at the same time as shrinking the used vehicle fleet, will put upwards pressure on used vehicle prices, hence making purchasing new cars more attractive.

And of course they run the "The person buying that car would probably have bought it anyway.” to oppose the $8625 ev rebate. Massive uptick in EV sales when the rebate came in says for many this is not the case.

Did anyone try to price match at the warehouse?

    • +11

Living & Co Tesra Model 3

    • +2

They said 10 was considered commercial purpose and would only price match 5, so i pirchased 4x5 ;)

Once you drive out of the dealership you lose 20% of the value. Tesla car depreciate heavily. We have test drove a model Y wasn't impressed with the interior quality. Seat are terrible with thin cushion. Back seats are a joke to small for a full size adult. We ended up with back pain after our 20 minutes test drive. These are cheaply made car with high profit margin. They are not luxury car, but price tagged at luxury car.

    • Try are selling for the same price as purchase price right out of the delivery centre.
Higher km ones are less, yes, but 100km or less are currently at 0% depreciation.

        • +3

The cheapest new EQC I could find was a last year model for ~$140k

          • +4

@taeken: So in summary a car that costs twice as much has some more padding in it's seats.

            • +3

              @manuka: I guess 2/1 is technically a fraction?

        • Give me a EQC for Tesla price. Happy to trade in that case. Willing to forgo rebate if that happens.

But more than double the price for Benz or Lexus, sorry no deal.

        • +1

I ever said anything about interior quality in my comment, Gamzallup.
Although now that you say it, EQC has a cost far higher than a Model 3 for example, so you are paying for higher quality interior materials in an EQC.

      • the current price discounts are cheaper than last years dec sales

The old rules of thumb for vehicle depreciation have gone out the window in the last few years.

Until the Model Y was released, model 3's barely depreciated. But there is now quite a glut of used Model 3's that have pushed the value down. (cheapest 2019 cars are asking $45,500). Still this is not abnormal depreciation for a late model car.

Cheapest (non scam) Model Y on trademe is asking $61,500. its a 2022 with 11,000km. Well under 20%.

You are correct about Tesla's not being luxury car's. And the 3 / Y are very much cheaply built (Minimal acoustic insulation, No gauges / screen in fount of driver, No V2L, No keys included etc). But they are very fast, and have some nice tech like built in dash cameras.

      • +2

One of the reason for Tesla depreciation is there is hardly any or no wait time for a new one, along with the price going down people have more options to configure (like color, white seats, 20" wheels) which are now well under $80K limit for rebate.

    • +1

Why compare a budget ev to a luxury car though? Tesla model 3 is the new Toyota Prius, taxi drivers car, etc. people who drive a lot will quickly get their $$ back from fuel savings, they are not buying for the luxury values and they’re not same target audience as Benz has (also half the price!)

  • Is UDC Finance the best/only option for financing a new Tesla purchase in NZ?

    • +2

You can have any bank provide finance. If you have home loans, might be able to get good interest rate for EV purchase.

Edit: Tesla don't care which finance you use. They just care about the amount being paid before the delivery date. There is option to select other finance option.

  • The question is what other nice and better looking cars are available in that price. Probs can get Audi A3, VW Golf or Tiguan etc.
Just an FYI I do know what EV cost and stuff so pls don't come back at me. Im purely just thinking out loud as to what other cars a person can get in that price range.

    • +1

A lot of people are willing to pay a bit more for an EV, given lower fuel costs over it's lifespan.

I think the Model 3 is competing with stuff like upper spec camry's, and the Model 3 with stuff like upper spec Rav4's.

If one wants similar performance to a base model 3 in a petrol sedan, they have to pay quite a lot for it. As an example the 182kW Kia stinger is $70k+ ORC.

In the EV space, the main competition on the low side is the BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and the run out Hyundia Ioniq (MG4 should arrive soon too). On the high side, the main competition is the Polestar 2 and the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 (+ Various high priced euro's)

  • Actually find myself seriously considering a tesla now.

Should I buy new or second hand?

    • Depends on how much of a hurry you are in. April - May estimated delivery on new orders.

My gut feeling is if you are looking at a model Y, go new. cheapest on trade-me is $60,500 in Wellington or $61,500 in Auckland. (ignoring the blue one where the seller isn't responding to questions). Less than $3k (perhaps $5k if you negotiate a discount with the private sellers) extra to get a brand new car, which of course will be a 2023 year, and come with brand new tires, wipers, new car smell, longer warranty remaining etc.

For model 3, there is a lot of used cars on the market, so used is more viable. I suspect it will take a month of so for used car asking prices to fall in respect of the $3k price cut to new cars. Personally I think $51k for a 2021 with 28,000km on isn't great value given a brand new car can be had for $59,362 (assuming you want white. + charging setup). Two years extra warranty, brand new tires and other consumables, latest build specs, two years less wear and tear etc.

Note for the model 3, there are american built cars, and for the china built SR+ cars, there are two sizes of battery, think the new bigger size kicked in some time in 2021.

Note that the tesla website itself has some inventory and used cars for sale.

      https://www.tesla.com/en_NZ/inventory/used/m3?FleetSalesRegi…

If you like really really fast cars, you can get a 2019 long range performance (0-100 in 3.4sec) model 3 for under $65k (includes enhanced autopilot too).

      • Not to forget older m3 will be having previous gen cpu which is slower. Can't recall till which year.

  • just gonna put it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/10bupta/comm…

tl;dr, you're a sucker if you paying to be a autopilot tester for tesla

  • any idea when NZ will get the model y with the 7 seats configuration?

    • +1

Not soon. Perhaps never. NZ model 3 & Y orders are filled from the china factory, which I understand currently only builds the 5 seat configuration.

Pickings are pretty slim when it comes to new BEV's in NZ with more than 5 seats. Only rebate eligible one is the Mifa 9 Elite ($79,990 before $8650 rebate).

Above the rebate cap there the Merc EQB (and Another model I think)

  • +1

looks like they are increasing the price =/

    • Just looked it up. $500 increase for both the base trim of the Model 3 and model Y (didn't check higher trims).

      I'll mark it as expired.

Also there was an announcement today, where the EV rebate will decrease by $1500 on July 1, so every new EV will jump be $1500 in effective cost on that date.
