Set Top Box / Freeview or SkyTV or similar?

Need a set top box for the new place in this week.

Its got fibre connection (i think the previous tenants only had sky tv so all the rooms have F cable ports) and there is no antenna for coaxial like my TV has.

I already tried an F to coaxial cable, but that didn't allow me to watch freeview on my fairly new LCD TV (which I was hoping for as the TV has freeview inbuilt)

My next option is to get a set top box for freeview. Whats cheap or is it better to get igloo or skytv or similar?

Thanks

  • Does your new place have a satellite dish or UHF antenna?

It had nothing, previous tenants removed everything :|

Ended up getting skytv $49.22 p/month deal running currently for 6 months (and got sports for 3 months free). This is cheaper than paying $450 to install a dish by Antenna Masters <_<

Plus Sky will leave the dish on the property after I cancel my subscription anyway.

Was going to get the new apple tv but i don't think there are enough apps/channels for it yet.

    • wow, that's crazy. I'm pretty sure having some sort of TV system is a necessity and should be provided by the landlord? But anyway, sound like a great deal to me. Did you end up installing the sky dish in time for Rugby World Cup with your 3 months free Sky sport package? haha

  • Did you try an internal uhf aerial. Most of the population can access freeview hd with an internal aerial.

    • yeah tried that but it didn't work

So much content available from sites like Couchtuners and DocumentaryHeaven etc, almost not worth worrying about traditional TV/Satellite systems. Can pretty much create your own personalised 'channel' with chosen content.

Thanks for those sites - will def use in the future. SkyTV isn't as good as I had expected.

I watch sports, kid watches cartoons and the wife watches Indian tv, so I don't really need sky, but its nice to have (although I wish the Blackcaps put up more of a fight against the Aussies right now)

just turn it off bro, easier that way.

      • Plenty of other similar sites, as well as Anime sites etc. No shortage of progs and addons which will let you download streaming video. Then there are a heap of internet radio/TV sites as well (including Indian stations). (I use an old free program called RamaRadio) which has a very intuitive auto record and file system.)

Since Sky started including ads, can't really see the point. Actually think it was rather clever how 'they' dumbed down 'free to air' TV, then effectively replaced it with paid channels which were almost as bad.

The legality of some of these sites is always a little dubious, so viewer discretion advised. (TOR is user friendly!)

    • Couchtuner is blocked for me :(

Perhaps try one of the free VPNs or one of the many IP Blockers/Spoofers available as browser addons etc (eg ZenMate)Usually not too hard to get around geoblockers. Even on ordinary web pages, worth doing sometimes as the content/prices etc can vary surprisingly, depending what country they think you are in. Good luck

Oh turns oh their .la domain is down, so I just use .ch

  • I have discovered the new apple tv has apps now, and have discovered there are a few channel apps that are available via iTunes (some are country locked) but may consider this when my 6 months of sky is up.

In other news the cricket at the WACA (my home town) is looking a lot more of a match than the first test.

Watching it now, what a terrible pitch.
