Comparing Which Rewards CC Has The Best Return as of Today (Spreadsheet)

I've gone over all the Air New Zealand Airpoints reward cards listed on their site and created this spreadsheet to compare them.
I've also added other reward cards that I could find (excluding Westpac's points card, because they're too complicated to get an equivalent $)

If there are any other rewards cards I've missed, let me know and I'll add it.

The spent columns calculate what your monthly reward would be if that much was spent, minus the card fee's (calculated from the yearly fee / 12), this means the rewards you see there, are rewards you'd get, taking into account the cost of having the card.

Feel free to make a copy if you want to test a specific monthly spend (that's what col L is for, just change L1 and sort it)
By default I have it sorted on the 1k spend column.

Obviously there is more to picking a CC then just rewards, this is just meant as a basic guide. Though I suspect most of us here already know which card/s perform best. I was just curious to see how all the banks stack up currently at various spend levels.

Looking at this data it seems these are the best cards for each range of monthly spend.

  • $0 - $1.7k: American Express Airpoints Card or Dosh PrePaid Visa Card
  • $1.8k - $3.2k: TSB Platinum Mastercard
  • $3.3k+ spend: American Express Airpoints Platinum Card

* Please note that I've done my best to make sure the numbers are all correct, but I may have made mistakes. If you see any, let me know.

Spent $1700 today but dosh would only let me load $700. So something to watch for

    • Yeah, they have a $700 daily limit for Windcave topups. I usually do it via bank transfer for larger amounts, usually completes in 1-2 hours. But being a weekend, it'd probably not complete till tomorrow.

They go into details on the limits here:

(I have no links to Dosh, I just asked them about it a few weeks ago, as was curious)

PS, my unpublished comment below, is just this comment, I accidentally put it in the main feed.

  • Thanks, this is useful in confirming it's time to move on from ANZ…

    Been using BNZ classic

it's not the best but for students and low spenders, $500-$2000 vs its low fee, its was best until Dosh arrived.
Though flybuys you can double dip in some places too like new world

This is really useful, thank you for sharing this.
I was looking a the BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum and noticed you can also choose to earn Flybuys instead of "BNZ Rewards". You get 1 FB point for every $15 spent. If you choose fuel rewards as your Flybuys reward type I think this equates to 5c/l discount for every $100 spent which on a 50L fill is the equivalent of $2.5 return for every $100 spent (or $40 spend to get $1 back to use the same terminology as the spreadsheet). This would make it the highest return assuming you could use fuel discounts and didn't mind filling up at Z or Caltex. I could be wrong in my calculations though!

    • Thanks for sharing. I'm with BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum as well and i always wanted to derive these numbers but didnt get to work that around. And I see the insurances that come with the card as bonus. Especially the car insurance for reducing the excess when renting!
