'Metz - A German Brand' that's a laugh, like saying pizza hut is an Italian restaurant. Get it with a five-year warranty bargain for an OLED. It's got a lower quality LG panel and a lower powered processor resulting in a lot of artefacts in darker scenes where expensive brands have powerful processes and better software to handle upscaling on poor quality streaming services where low bit rate is a problem.

Yeah I’ve seen that argument quite a bit over the years. “It’s a panel from Samsung” etc.

May well be but the electronics controlling the signal to it do matter as well, and often they’re crap in the cheaper brands.

    • ' Get it with a five-year warranty '

BIG FYI. Noel Leeming extra warranties DO NOT cover screen burn. Considering metz is offering a 3 year warranty in Australia (and I cant find the advertised warranty in noel leeming, sigh)… Im pretty more inclined than usual, having worked for noel leeming for about 3 years, to say that people are just wasting money if they buy the extended warranties unless they've really nuked the price on it….

Its a cheaper tv, but definitely more than 5 years for cga :)

Whack a chromecast or console into it is probably not that bad.

You are always wasting your money on buying an extended warranty.

5-7 years is the minimum expected lifespan of a TV. If it breaks down before then - CGA

almost 100% agree. As I mentioned, gave three years of my life to Noel Leeming.

aside from getting a couple day turn around on a faulty Chromebook (which is wholly unnecessary if your kids' school offers loaner laptops), I struggled to see a reason to buy the product protection that didn't boil down to 'we won't drag our feet if you pay us extra'.

You have already paid for your cover under legislation in the price of the product Don't pay for it twice.

There's some really sketchy stuff that goes on regarding their protection schemes, warranty periods etc… but me thinks going into details on it might be against whatever I signed going in.

There's also opportunity to game the system, and you are still earning for the salesperson when you do this (if the product has an incentive).

          1. Buy the product, agree to the warranty if it is bundled.

          2. The salesperson discounts the product to include the warranty, which you might infer earns them more money than otherwise

          3. You return the warranty within the cooling off period and you're up discount amount

          4. Salesperson still enjoys any incentive on the product. Where it is a product with no incentive, they've at worst sold the equivalent of an iphone with no addons. No biggie.

          • @Grandma: So if you buy an extended warranty you think they give a bigger discount. Interesting. Have you ever tried this?

          • @Grandma: We bought a $12,000 JVC projector from an Auck projector retailer with 3 year warranty. It had a major failure at 3.5 years. The retailer said, not their problem as they had a change of ownership in between us buying and the projector failing.

JVC NZ said not their problem because the projector is out of warranty. We mentioned the cga, So they offered a discount on a new projector which I rejected … in the end, JVC said they would pay for the part, and we would have to pay almost $600 for labour.

Commerce commission are awful, I've raised issues like this with them before and they are never interested.

            • @jedmeister: $40 at the DT? Not really sure how change of ownership works, wouldnt the new owners still have the same contract with you

Also, thats a pretty swanky projector

            • @jedmeister: You're absolutely right about the CGA . Product failures can be contentious on who is responsible for the failure it might be a component or it could be a power surge or spike and sometimes hard to determine and can take months to resolve meanwhile you without your appliance. I had the same problem with a sounder of my boat which cost around $12,000 it failed after three years and the company wanted $2000 to repair it, my lawyer wrote them a letter and it was quickly resolved but it did come at a cost. Got a printer from Noel Leeming and it came with a warranty as part of the deal and failed after 4 1/2 years of the five year warranty and within few days I had a new printer. I would not recommend these warranties either but this Chinese TV which is highly likely to have a mainboard failure within a five year period.

    • Haier as Brand name was also chosen because it “sounded” German.

    Previous discussions here

  • A friend told me they are old LG panels which are easy to burn so keep that in mind. But the are cheap

    • Should be able to claim a replacement down the line under CGA (5 years at least, over 5 years would be more push back from Noel Leeming). I think these TVs come with 2 years warranty as well.

  • I like how 'Metz - A German Brand' is a feature and benefit.

I'm also curious how dubious this claim might be given this is on their wikipedia:

    '
    19 November 2014: Metz filed for insolvency.[4][5]
January 2015: About 110 of the 540 employees will be laid off.[6]

March 2015: Two investors were found.[7] The company will be split in two. The TV business is taken over by the Chinese electronics manufacturer Skyworth as Metz Consumer Electronics GmbH, whereas the plastics technology and flash business were bought by the local Daum Group (Germany) to firm Metz mecatech GmbH. 298 of the employees will be taken over.[8]'

But a grand for a 55 oled is great. I might stop by my local this afternoon and see if they have any on display.

No HDMI 2.1 is a deal breaker I think for me.

    • Weirdly there is an option in the TV settings to change between HDMI 2.0 and 2.1

  • This would pair up nicely with the AMEX $100 cashback, if you haven't made use of it yet

  • So, has anyone actually bought one of these? How are they finding it?

    It's pretty tempting.

    • Instore and online all list out of stock, so I guess it doesn't matter.

      • The 55” is still showing available online? And 65” is available in some stores

  • Have been down to the petone warehouse they still have the 55in and 65in in stock at old price may pay to keep an eye on the warehouse if they decide to clear these as well

  • $1329 at the warehouse for 65in
