Anyone got good chocolate recommendations?

We've been getting some good chocolate deals now - but I was wondering if any of you recommend good chocolates here in NZ?

My go-to chocolate has always been Kitkat (or Snickers) and my fanciest has been the spicy chocolates from Schoc (usually the ones I give as gifts).

Whittakers are good too but I don't know what to choose - there's so many flavors and I've always been basic like Fruits N Nuts or the one with almonds. And a colleague from work has always been big on dark chocolates but sometimes they're too bitter for my liking.

So yeah basically just wanting to taste chocolates other than Kitkat lol.

  • My go to is usually Gold almond or hazelnut whittakers. If you don't like nuts, I recently enjoyed the Hazela flavour. Or the blue creamy chocolate is also a fave.

    • Alright nice I'm buying the hazela one tomorrow thanks!!!

      • +1

A lot of people like the hazella, I wasn't a big fan, I think it was a tad sweet for my tatse.

        • I’m not a fan of the Hazella either.

  • I miss the Whittakers Macadamia.
Been gone a few years now but that was so good when it was around.

    • Ooof discontinuing good chocolates, classic Whittakers. Does it have a similar taste with foreign chocolates?

      • Hard to compare. All the brands are so different and what I like others won’t.
These days I’ll go with just the plain Whittakers milk or almond.

In other brands, I’m also pretty fond of Lindt.

        • Yes!! Lindt! I buy the red as well when they're on sale

      • Macadamias became way too expensive for them to continue producing that block

    • Have you tried Makana Macadamia Butter Toffee Crunch? That's the best macadamia thing I've ever had, not cheap but so good.

  • My all time fav is Merci. Not available in NZ, but it is at the airport so I tend to pickup from there when I get chance or ask someone.

Next best is Ghirardelli squares, which again not available in NZ. They are now owned by Lindt, so they do have some similar flavors.

Other than that my next goto will be Whittakers hazelnut or almonds and kitkat. I like 60-70% dark chocolates sometimes as well.

Again as mentioned by others it's all about personal taste.

  • Lindt chilli

  • Schoc flavours are great, haven't had for a few years since we moved south.
We like dark chocolate, the dark salted caramel Whittaker's is our fav block. I like the coconut and any nut ones too.
We have Ocho here in Dunedin, quite nice, I prefer Whittaker's over it but it's a nice present.
I miss the great hot chocolates in Wellington, chilli ones from Butler's or Bohemian (or the cardamom), especially good on a cold morning.

  • Lindt dark with a touch of sea salt hits my satisfaction buttons. As do all the whittakers, for the first 100g you know.

If you want a wee taste of the premium chocolate bar world (craft chocolate) then the Hogarth ones are a very very tasty starting point available from a supermarket under $10.

I'm in the chocolate industry. It's a bit like wine or craft beer, you need to match to what you like. Nothing wrong with Kit kat chocolate, I think it is still the most popular bar in the world. Their gold chocolate is good (much better than Caramilk). Try Lindt milk, its a very good milky chocolate that you can easily get retail. FYI most chocolatiers use Barry Callebaut chocolate. I think you may be able to buy this direct at costco but keep an eye on best before dates as the milk in particular can be affected. Whittakers also make good chocolate but less creamy in general. I thought there almond/nougat was a good take on toblerone.

Cocoa market is at a 15 year high at present and sugar is coming off 7 year highs so be wary prices may fluctuate a bit.

Don't waste your time with sugar free, just enjoy regular product in smaller quantities, IMO.

  • Give this a go if you don't mind blowing $60 on chocolate

Otherwise grab a Queen Anne chocolate fish from a supermarket
