  • I guess this is something useful only for rural, right?

You could use it in town but it's super expensive monthly and less reliable latency wise than conventional Fibre

I agree - if you live somewhere where there is a reasonable chance of having no connectivity (such as flood prone areas!), and it would matter to you, then this is akin to an insurance policy perhaps. You pay for it upfront, and hope it turns out to have no use (apart from the 'utility' of peace-of-mind).

      • Problem becomes you need internet to purchase a plan - so it would be okay if you needed daily internet in that sort of situation where your mobile wouldn't suffice

        • Good point.

I guess it all comes down to what costs you take into account for the location you live in, and how important internet access would be to you personally.

If it would be important, you might want to have their lowest monthly plan subscribed ongoing.

          • @Alan6984: the lowest price is $160 . I was considering this a few months ago and just couldn't justify the additional cost.

Fair enough - for some people, paying an 'insurance premium' of $160 pm might well be worthwhile (some businesses definitely), but I doubt many private residences would consider internet access to be that valuable.

          • @Alan6984: It really comes down to where you live, I have Lightwire $155 which is around the same price but a lot slower connection. I also have fibre for around $95 and the differences is a 50Gb file 40 minutes and 9 hours with Lightwire . Cellular in the area is even worse so there's not a lot of choice. Lightwire is not all that reliable either it has power outages and is affected by the weather but we use around 700 to 800Gb a month and it is the cheapest on the market next to Skylink. Lightwire connection has to be line of sight so that's also a limiting factor and that's where Skylink has the advantage.

I tried it a few months back - You didn’t need internet to sign up, it will connect for that on startup, as long as you have a Credit card.

Also, in rural areas, when floods hit they take out power and that takes out cell towers. Plug the starlink into your generator and one quick payment screen is between you and your internet. Makes it really useful to check the news - from Piha to Wairoa, starlinks were being loaded on helicopters to get them to stranded communities in all of these floods/slips in 2023.

          • @guysaturday: @guysaturday Thanks for letting us know that internet is not required for signup (and presumably un-pausing a subscription)

Its mainly for rural, but there are a couple of non-rural use cases:

      • during a natural disaster when the normal telcos are down (eg caused by widespread power outages). (You'd probably need to provide you own backup power for the dish though).

        • on your motor home

It’s basically like razors and printers, in that they give you the hardware for free because the real money is in the ongoing service.

If you wanted Starlink though then it’s a nice price.

  • Is anyone having issues when putting through payment? It’s not accepting any of my cards. ANZ/Amex

This expires today for anyone interested.
If you have a membership activated, such as CSCBG Main, it doesn't show the expiry date.
    "Offer ends 18/07/2023"

  • The price has gone up today. Now $729, or $334.15 with CSC discount.
