Anyone Gotten a Price Increase Email from One NZ?

Just got the following email from One NZ

Important: Your broadband price is increasing

Kia ora
At One New Zealand, we remain absolutely focused on keeping you connected, giving you great value and continuously improving the service you receive – and we’ll always try to offer you the most competitive prices.
But third-party companies who charge us for connecting to their network to provide your broadband service have increased their prices once again. With other business costs also on the rise, unfortunately we need to increase the price of your broadband.

What does this mean for you?
From 2 October 2023, your Unlimited Fibre Max broadband plan will increase by $6 a month. This will not affect any Pay Monthly mobile discount you have, your access to One NZ Rewards, or your SuperWifi (if you have it).

I've recently signed a 2-year contract with them, in return for a $200 account credit.

Does this mean I will need to suck this up, or would I have an option to change to a cheaper provider?
Keen on hearing other Cheapies comments :)

In these situations you can usually get out of your fixed term contract without penalty due to the price increase.
From the website: https://one.nz/broadbandpricechange/ and under the FAQ section 'I am currently on a fixed term contract but I wish to end my contract because of the price change'

If you are on a fixed term contract prior to 2 October and wish to disconnect your servcies because of the price increase , you can get in touch 0508 010 231

    I would contact them.
I have just signed up with NOW Broadband after a similar price increase from Skinny and exited my contract early with no penalty. I had 3 months free at the beginning of my term.

    • I got the signup deal that provided the wifi mesh setup. Do you think I can use this to get out of my contract early without having to pay for those items or return them? Got about 6 months left.

      • You can certainly try.
I had an email from Skinny a couple of months back under the subject ‘Important changes to your Broadband plan’ which said:

        What are my options?

We'd love you to stay with Skinny, but you do have the option to cancel your Skinny broadband due to this price increase. If that's what you want to do then contact-us by 1 September 2023 and you won't have to pay early termination fees if you're on a fixed term contract.

I'm actually surprised that they are changing the prices on a customer that signed up for a fixed term, but this is VodafONE I guess.

If you get to keep the $200 and can exit for free, then it seems very positive for you.

    • Its the same as all of them, gives the chance to move to a new provider

That's some epic bait and switch.

I guess all providers are putting price up. Bit more here

I was with skinny and similar email 2 months back. Switched to slingshot with 4 months free. I still had around 3 months left on 12 months term with skinny. Didn't pay any penalty and to my surprise I didn't even had to give 30 days notice. Not sure if something has changed recently, but in past there was a 30 day notice period from broadband.

So probably good for you to just switch to someone else. 2degrees or slingshot recently were giving 4 months free.

    • So far no word from Contact of increasing their broadband prices yet but they're open term anyway so can switch within 30 days notice period.

How do you find slingshot now? As I read slingshot=2degrees=vocus and their customer service is still terrible?

      • Very stable and consistent speed with Slingshot. Had initial drop outs, but it was bad config on my router. Forgot a change which would drop connection after few hours. But since then bang on. No idea on customer service, do I need it ? not so far. Have probably contacted support only 3-5 times in last 10 years so I don't really care.

My requirement is very clear, consistent stable connection & speed at competitive rates.

I won't join 2degree as they use cgnat. Slingshot is not so far.

I'm also with Slingshot currently, and been very happy with them. I could imagine that service might vary by location (if you are using copper lines), but I would have thought if you are on fibre, it should be consistent.

I'm the same - I haven't called support more than twice in about twenty years, so I'm not overly concerned, but if something does go wrong, I would hope to be able to get it fixed quickly of course.

I won't join 2degree as they use cgnat. Slingshot is not so far.

Just to note: You can get a routeable IP with 2Degrees, but I suspect you would have to pay something ($10 pm maybe) and it would likely also be fixed (which is a bonus).

Not sure what 2Degrees are doing with IPv6 addresses currently. I had a quick look at a client, and they have been allocated a /56 subnet within IPv6 (they aren't using it), and we have not tried connecting into them using their IPv6 address, but it appears to be a publicly routeable IP from a two second visual inspection.

Might have to give that a go later :-)

          • @Alan6984: Fair points. Don't want to pay extra for static ip when I can get my work done with reverse proxy or ddns. Reason I want to stay away is for iot devices which doesn't play nice with cgnat sometimes as some people have complained of things not working sometimes.

I just don't have time to figure what's wrong with the comms and try to fix it. Not worth the time to be honest. Especially when I know that it is working with one provider. Maybe in few months/yrs they will sort it out or anyone else for that matter.

Totally - the deal has to stack up in total, and 2Degrees are going to be less competitive than they look at first blush (if you want / need the routeable IP).

Ours is going down $12 a month. Win! We are on their HFC network in Wellington.

Note - One NZ employee here, but I don't work on Broadband products.

Wholesale charges from the LFCs (Chorus etc.) have increased, and unfortunately that means the price goes up for everyone. From what I understand many other providers have already made this change.

On top of the FAQ that @bigcheese linked, here's the relevant sections from our T&C:

    6. Changing your Services

We may change our Services, Plans, Charges or Consumer Terms at any time. You may also decide to change your Services or technology. This section tells you how these changes will affect you.

    -snip-

6.2 Changes that disadvantage you: If a change disadvantages you, and the change is within our control, we’ll give you 30 days’ notice of the change or where that is not possible, as much notice as possible, via email, text message or by publishing the change on our website.

    -snip-

    7. You or One NZ ending your Service

7.1 If you’re on a fixed term contract and decide to cancel your Plan we may charge an Early Termination Charge. If you’re cancelling because of a change that disadvantages you (under 6.2, above), an Early Termination Charge won’t apply but you will need to pay any other outstanding amounts for the Services you have with us including for example, any amounts owed in connection with Interest Free Payment.

    -snip-

7.3 If you are cancelling due to a change under 6.2 above, you’ll need to do so within a reasonable timeframe of being notified of the change to not be charged an Early Termination Charge.

Note that SuperWifi is included in 7.1 as "other outstanding amounts for the Services you have with us" - so you would need to pay the balance of that if you're within 24 months of redeeming that offer. (@tacobaron FYI!)

  • Same situation from One. Looks like 2degrees is the best deal for VDSL at $59/mth (includes $10 disc for having mobile with them).

  • August deals

anyone with Now? Good or bad ?

    • Signed up in the past couple of weeks with NOW.
      No problems so far.
Needed to call and check some details and call was answered within a minute which I was really surprised at how quick it was. Way faster than the likes of 2Degrees.

    • This is a single sample / experience so take with a pinch of sale, but I had reason to call Now about a month ago regarding a client of ours - the phone was answered almost immediately, and the guy I spoke to seemed to know what he was talking about.

  • Which plan did you get? up to 300/100 Mbps ?

    • Yes I got the Fibre 300 (300/100) plan.

      • Thanks , will it work on Skinny Fibre router ?

        • Yes that is exactly what I did as Skinny was who I just finished up with.
I did get the free router with NOW but haven’t set it up yet so I am using my old router.
Just a very quick setting update and you’re away.

          https://d1acq29e7jo33e.cloudfront.net/media/documents/Skinny…

          • @bigcheese: Yes free router but you pay $14 Router delivery

            • @Joe: What is your promo code when you signed up , forgot to ask you - we may both get $100 each

  • anyone got a promo code for Now Broadband ?
    - we may both get $100 each

Isn't slingshot or 2Degrees cheaper with 4 months free?

      • his deal requires you to bundle your broadband and power with 2degrees.
        I have better power deals

        • No. I just signed up for a friend our the weekend. Only broadband with 4 months free and 6 months prime video.

          https://www.2degrees.nz/broadband/plans?cid=a&discount=no

            • @Joe: If you’re looking at the same deal I got with NOW then it’s 6 months half price - not free.

          • @ace310: I see. I don't need Prime its 8/month but I get 6 months half price instead of 4 with Now Broadband

            • @Joe: Cheers mate , corrected ..long day :)

  • I got the same from 2Degrees.

I'm happy. It was close to my free Prime sub being over, and I've spent the $100 prezzie card. Let see who else will give me something for free :)
