More nights awake with the little one? 🤣 Thanks for all you do!

    • Technically yes (3.30am last night!), but I left a script running overnight to do some of the hard work for me :) Thanks!!

  • I really want to go Bali with family in August school holidays next year and its quite expensive for flights from NZ. Whats the best way to get some cheap tickets?

  • Thanks, I was doing some research for a trip to sydney next year and was surprised to find 2 one way trips were cheaper by about $50 pp than return bookings. Both with qantas. Air nz flight schedule was not great. Only 1 direct flight per day syd to chc at 6.00am everything else through akl or melbourne with long transit times. Thought it would be better by now

    • From Chch? I hate that they cancelled the Jetstar -> Sydney route :/

  • Hello

Thank you for all the links.

I am a newbie here so the question might sound silly.

Upon going through the beat my flight link, it redirects to my trip to book the flight. Did some online reaserch on reviews and it seems there may be an issue if the flight cancels. The carrier(eg Jetstar) will not take responsibility as it was booked via a third party website.

How reliable are third party apps in an event of the flight cancellation.

    Thanks

      Hey,

So beatthatflight is a search site - it looks at OTAs (online travel agencies) like trip.com, mytrip.com, gotogate, etc to find their cheapest prices.

OTAs tend to be able to provide lower prices than direct because they make their money in other ways - addons of insurance, or txt updates, or extra baggage fees, or name change fees (which might be free directly with an airline).

They're still travel agents, however, and much like if you booked through house of travel or flight center, you still get a PNR (booking reference) with the airline.

If the airline cancels, it's still their responsibility to move you to a different flight. If you're wanting something different yourself, however, making your own changes to the dates, you have to go through the agent.

An example: I was flying Tauranga->Auckland->Chch with AirNZ, booked through one of these (Gotogate IIRC). Got to Auckland and it was covid chaos, mass cancellations, no flights for a day and a bit. AirNZ still a) changed us to a new flight b) paid for a hotel and c) paid for taxi to/from the hotel.

The issue with a lot of the online reviews for the OTAs is - if your flight goes well, you tend to remember the airline - eg AirNZ in the example above. If it goes badly - eg if you need to change your passport number or something, you have to deal with the OTAs. And one thing they do have is notoriously bad customer call centers/email. So that can be a nightmare. But if you're careful to make sure you're booking everything correctly, and don't have any hiccups, I've had very few issues with them - the only major one being a covid credit (thanks Qantas).

      Hope that helps!

      Mark

      • Hi Mark

Thank you for the brilliant explanation. I don't think I could have got a better explanation.

        Answered all of my questions.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply elaborately.

        • No problem, it's a common question!
