Ebikes in 2023

Looking to buy an ebike for my 5km commute to save using car as parking is becoming impossible and annoying.
My budget is super fixed at 2.5k max.
All options I have viewed the build quality left lots to be desired - cheap components and creaky.
What have you all gone for over the years?

I recalled the company I used for the otago rail trail sell used exhire bikes and the price is fairly sharp. https://www.shebikeshebikes.co.nz/product/sinch-mode-2-ebxl-…

    Brain wants new though!

Best to convert one of your current old bikes to get good quality at low price with good wattage.
https://www.converted.co.nz/ would be my recommendation as they are very helpful and good value from my experience.

    • yeah bafang kit is pretty cheap and ?reliable

      • Bafang, are very reliable from my experience, and there is a lot of them out there compared to the big named brands and I have not heard of many issues compared to the big name brands. Also, more user serviceable than Shimano and Bosch

  • Any reason you need a eBike? Its pretty reasonable to expect to ride at 20-30kmh on a push bike (you might struggle to average that on a mountain bike but a commuter or road bike would be easy) so you're only talking a 15minute bike ride. Unless you have a lot hills you're probably better off spending your money on something else (unless you plan to use the ebike for other stuff as well)

2nd car replacement and my commute has two "(profanity) off" hills on the route.

      • northshore or hendry avenue?

          no, inner city new plymouth.

  • A number of clearance models from reputable brands, that meet your fixed budget at https://www.evocycles.co.nz/rp?cn=15983

  • I have a hikobike enduro (hub drive) that we bought on clearance for about $2,390. It has a 672wh battery.

Found that for this price range, you’d be looking at a hub driven bike. And some cruddy front suspension. The components aren’t great and it weighs a ton. But it hasn’t caused any issues in the past year of owning it.

My commute is 5km and I do have a commuting bike. But the ebike gets most of the use when it’s cold, raining or when there’s a headwind. It’s really fun to ride and gets me to work if I leave late.

I would recommend something that does more than the 32km/hr max if you can find one. I’d cruise at about 37km/hr if I’m running late or keeping up with traffic.

Looked into converting current bike into an ebike. Unless you’re doing it yourself, it looked like it’d cost about $1500-$1800. Figured I might as well buy from a shop and get a warranty.

If you’re handy and have time, converting might be a good option. The bike from the shop also came with all the accessories for commuting. Stand, pannier rack, mud guards, lights that run off the battery etc. which was worth the extra money for us.
