Well, guess im going to detour on wed morning.

Hopefully their big sellout is as good as last year

  • i can imagine the line in front of the stores.

  • +1

    Sellout is ex display?

    • +3
      • I can't imagine it will be as big as last year.

Word on the street is that that was mayhem in stores. People showing up for repair jobs or stock that the public shouldn't know about (i.e. fixtures or broken items)

  • It says 'one card per shopping group' but I don't know how easy that would be to enforce…

    • +7

One car pulls up. Mom, dad and 8 kids pops out…

  • Wonder what time you will have to arrive to get a card at stores in Auckland. 0830? 0800? 0700?

    • Anyone go last time what time did you get there to get the freebie?

    • +2

Depends on your hourly rate lol. I mean if you are doing nothing else sure. Otherwise, is standing in a line for 1 hour? 2 hours? to get $50 worth it to you?

      • My local happens to have seats out the front, so Ill just do some work while I wait If it's not too busy and there's noone there at about 830

      • +1

If going by hourly then multiply by your average tax as well because this is tax-free.
        😁

      • +1

I'm going to turn up half an hour before opening and hope for the best. Have to pick up an order anyway and go to another shop nearby. Post has just over 100 likes on Facebook so hopefully that means not too many people know about it.

  • Sellout begins 7:30pm tonight - "Bookmark this page": https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/c/massive-sellout

Maybe this should be a separate post?

    • +1

It would get pulled without any deals showing. I'll be keeping an eye on it though.

    • Found a couple of pages yesterday that were part of this. 25% off, 30% off, 50% off. Have since been removed (had nothing in em anyway).

  • Spend $200 at NL via Zip and go in the draw to win $5,000 (from tomorrow).
    https://zip.co/nz/promotions/nlg-massive-giftcard-giveaway/

    • anyone know if you can split zip + giftcard there

  • +3

This was on the store when I visited this afternoon
    https://ibb.co/xCSZ2b1

    • So not so massive then ;)

  • Logitech Zone Vibe 100 Bluetooth Headset $79
    https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/p/logitech-zone-vibe-100-bluet…

    Other colours are $149.99

  • Aqara Video Doorbell G4 with Chime -$223.99 with bonus free amazon echo dot. Ends 26/09/2023

    All items with bonus

    • Were they free until the end of the 26th? Now they're all $27 with any purchase at all (i.e. a $6 pair of headphones not included in the sale still counts)

      • Yes. Free till 26th

  • Do you have to buy anything to get the $50 gift card? Just spoke to a Noel Leeming staff and they said it's for the first 10 'Customers'.

    • But their ad says 'first 10 people in store' with no mention of a purchase.
It would be false advertising if you had to buy something too

      • Customers could mean no staff etc. But if they do demand you buy something while I agree, wonder how easy it will be to argue with their staff over something like this.

But I'd also note first 10 customers seems a bit of a disaster anyway. First 10 people seems somewhat easy to manage first 10 people to queue and stick around to it opens get the card. First 10 customers is just inviting a mad rush of people rushing in grabbing one of those $4 HDMI cables or something, rushing and pushing to the checkout maybe knocking stuff over, knocking into people etc.

        • So at about 0900 door opened, staff member came and handed out cards. Turns out the two behind me were too obviously together, they were mother and child I think, so only got one. Not sure about the other 2 so not sure if everyone got one or not. I spent short time in store mostly checking if the Kindles or Kobos were on special (had trouble finding them had to ask staff), and then left, another person who'd gotten cards was also leaving, asked me if I did the same thing and the person in front of me was also in their car looking at phone and drove off later. Don't feel it's worth trying to go to either Westgate or New Lynn. Even if there wasn't 10 would be by time I get there.

  • +1

No one at the store I’m at. Opens in 30min.

    • That looks like a marketing flop then.
You could try going in and out the store ten times!

      • Now I’m thinking “is this person walking past here for gift card?”, “should I start a line?” lol.

        • +1

Holla if you’re at the central Hamilton store 😄. Look for guy wearing jandals.

          • +1

@Wakrak: Haha. Here in Upper Hutt, my hands are gonna fall off from the cold.

            • @jesserockz: I'm only one in line to only be wearing a t-shirt. In Auckland though so not that bad am wearing trackpants unlike another person wearing shorts. Mostly the wind

          • @Wakrak: Anyone in line?

            • @bullseye: Me and another guy who may be picking up an order or doing the same thing.

      • I arrived at Henderson store bit before 0830. Don't think there was anyone here. I checked the opening time as I saw someone go in but was just staff. Since I drove decided wait in car but hadn't parked right next to door. Saw someone arrive free minutes later who did park next to it then few minutes later. I moved my car then the person who had arrived after me got out so I did too and meanwhile another person who might have walked arrived. Was two people in other car who are behind me. Few minutes later WHS staff member arrived so now 6.

Edit: Two more people arrived (clearly together) didn't notice how think together so now 8

Edit 2 now 9 and maybe final person just arrived (confirmed)

Edit 4 11th just arrived and then bit later another WHS and think someone else just drove past and gave up

      • Funny thing is I vaguely remember when Texas Chicken Lincoln Road gave away a free piece of chicken few years ago I think recall by 15 minutes before opening there were more than 10 people in line

    • Yeah there's two of us here.

I'm just doing some emails in the car

    • Same in queenstown store. I was the first one,

  • Ormiston store had 13 people in line. Luckily I was number 9 😁

    • +1

The last 3 people need to learn how to count to 10!

    • +1

Did you manage to secure yours without any fuss? The last three didn't try to bust through the door before you? 😂

      • Haha fortunately not, they did leave rather dissapointed though

    • If some of them are families, they can only take 1 card, happened here at st lukes store, 12 people in line and last person received the card as well

  • Up to 6 now in upper hutt

  • Hornby Christchurch. Just 2 people

  • I was near a NL to get my daily coffee fix. At 8:40 there 7 people. Had my coffee and did some grocery shopping. Went past NL again at 8:57 and there were still 7 in line so I joined in, sweet $50 lol.

  • got my card at 9am here at st lukes store

  • Thank you, op! I got one this morning! Got there around 8:40 and was 7th in line. First turned up at 8am.

  • They tried to get us to purchase something first. Someone else argued that we shouldn’t have to because it doesn’t say that on the Facebook post. I was first in line so bought a sim card before the staff member changed his mind and just gave it to the first 10 people through the door.

    • In my store I asked staff and they said no need to make a purchase right now

  • Secured my $50 without any fuss, thank goodness! I was imagining all sorts of nonsensical scenarios of pushing/shoving last night, but nothing like that at all.

    Can confirm no purchase required.

    Thanks for the post OP!

  • Got mine. They were giving them out at the door, I took mine and didnt go in the shop. Had a brief discussion, its not tot the same scope as it was last year, so no stupidly cheap ex demo stock

It's wednesday morning, I have work

Looks like ill be pricematching some headphones later on

    • Very tempting!

Im in a few towns this weekend so I might just make sure noone has demo c2's left

      • +1

        Yeah good idea.

I managed to snag a new C2 42'' for $1600 a month ago at Appliance Outlet (didn't even know they had any stock left), only thing wrong with it was it was damaged packaging. Not sure why I'm still looking at the C3 prices haha xD

        • thats pretty good.

          I missed the $900 48 c2 on here a few weeks ago.

          • @Grandma: Yeah I saw that too, not bad of a deal.

I personally wanted 42'' though, intend to use it as a gaming monitor once I upgrade the PC.

  • Got Mine one of $50. Thanks to all team.

  • Lol, typical Noel Leeming practice.

They hyped up a countdown to open the front door but inside there were no gift cards.

Mentioned it to one of the staff who said that the offer was for "customers making purchases only", politely told him the advert never said that.
Shows his lack of sales skills though as by not hounding potential customers, they would likely buy something and/or spend more than anticipated…

He then sent a staff member to go grab them from the back of the shop, who was wondering around handing them out in no particular order.
Received one and I did buy something to gift someone.

TWH needs to focus on communication store-wide for all related subsidiaries that's for sure.

    • Handing them out in no particular order, damn…hahaha

      • +1

Haha, I literally pointed out to the guy some people who were in front of me to ensure they did not miss out.

        Weird set-up.

    • Once upon a time I worked at noel leeming and we opened early on a thursday to kickoff massive or some other sale.

Not a single customer was in the door until almost 11am that day.

It very potentially could have been the first year that they held 'massive' in store and not at showgrounds. If anyone from noel leemings marketing are reading this, saying 'massive clearout' doesnt mean anything to customers, everyone has massive sales, call it something less generic. People often wouldn't evne know there was a sale

      • Assuming there is 88 stores in NZ (from a rough google search) and they gave away a total of $44,000 in vouchers, seems like a poorly executed marketing effort.

I did not see a single paid ad on social media or even receive any email about it (although to be fair, I may have unsubscribed previously).

In-store, the deals were all pretty average.
The same open-box items that have been in the cabinets for 6 months still are not priced adequately.

They really need to improve getting rid of dead-stock.

Overall, IMO, just shows the typical brick and mortar retail business model is dying. I wonder if eventually Noel Leeming (as well as Warehouse Stationary) will become absorbed as 'zones' within existing Warehouse Stores in the next few years.

        • Warehouse stationery is already next to gone in the south island. I think the CHCH central might be the only one that isnt in a warehouse.

I know roughly the costings on each of the products in the clearance cabinets at my local and know that they're badly priced. They're doing a lot of full price + free insurance and I did ask about not having it on (it could have been an LG A2?) and was told that it was the same price either way. I think harveys accrue costs for holding old stock. Noels stores mustnt have any such incentive.

I've got my card from today and ive been on their website and quite genuinely almost all of the things I wanted out of their 'massive sale' are still cheaper elsewhere, so if they're not price competitive, have no decent interactive demos, force me to flag down someone to remove anything from the shelf and genuinely want >$30 for a couple of meters of cat6…. and are wondering why market share is fleeting… Maybe it's time to shuffle up their strategy.

themarket.com has no appeal to consumsers except throwing ads higher up in google search results

          • @Grandma: Dunedin still has a WS separate but also one in the warehouse store

  • There were 6 at Cambridge as the store opened.

    • I was the 2nd there…I turned up 25mins too early lol

  • +1

Palmerston North here. Just received my $50 card a few minutes ago.

Went to the store super early at 6:50am expecting a crazy long line and chaotic scenes like the american black friday sales. They put cones up front at 8am but it took until 8:55am (5 minutes before opening) for the next person to come. The staff took a photo right before the store opened and handed out the cards at the front door but none of the other customers seemed to know about the promotion (second guy after me expressed surprise and one lady even tried throwing their card away haha).

Dear God/Gods and/or anyone else who can help me (e.g. members of super-intelligent alien civilizations): The next time I wake up, please change my physical form to that of Finn McMillan formerly of South New Brighton at 8 years old and keep it that way forever. I am so sick of this chubby Asian man body! Thank you! - Chaul Jhin Kim (a.k.a. A Desperate Soul).

Staff were great and helpful. Thanks to the staff and NL for this great promotion and the OP for posting this. Next time I will probably come a bit closer to opening time though lol. Fortunately the weather wasn't too bad and it wasn't too windy unlike last week.

  • Whangarei had 4 people in line, and a random person walking in accidentally got the first card as number 5.

They didn't keep us to one per group, anyone who rocked up got a card so we scored $100, wicked!

  • 0855 Richmond had 7 of us, got myself the Breville airfryer for $99. Stoked. Thanks OP.

  • Went to the Lower Hutt store. Arrived at 8.45 expecting a queue and there were only 2 people waiting so I joined. Couple more people turned up and then another guy who had been waiting in his car got out and asked why there was a queue starting. He had been waiting because he needed to buy something and didn't even know about the promotion.
Doors opened and they just asked everyone to get in a line and there were exactly 10 people (plus a child with a parent) so managed to get one. Looked like a couple got one each as they didn't bother separating groups. They said the voucher is valid for 3 months.

Fair to say we owe Cheapies a big gratitude 👍 for the info

      • Definitely!

    • +1

Gift card valid for 5 years I just check via https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/gift-card-checker

      • i think they had just past a law forbiding a shorter valid period

        • +1

          Not just yet.
What you're referring to is the Fair Trading (Gift Card Expiry) Amendment Bill which has just passed its first reading in Parliament.
The bill is to prohibit the sale of gift cards with an expiry of less than three years.
It passed by a huge margin (109 for, 10 against) but won't become law until next year at this stage assuming it gets through the 2nd and 3rd readings.

          • @bigcheese: I assume it won't apply to this gift card anyway, nor for that matter the ones Noel Leeming sometimes give away for spending X, or the ones Mitre10 give away on Boxing day (if they still do). The bill seems quite specific you just can't sell such gift cards and T&C for a shorter date is void for a gift card "sold to the consumer". IANAL but I can't imagine that would apply to gift cards given away as a promotional item as they aren't being sold by any ordinary understanding of the term, and this is possibly intentional. Interesting it also would seem to allow a gift card given for a return (hopefully situation where the CGA would not apply!) to have a shorter limit. I wonder if that's intentional?

  • +1

Nobody in line at my local store inside a mall. I think both staff and customers were surprised for different reasons. Turns out even $50 isn't enough to get people to show up at their store!

    • Imagine just profiling certain types of customers and giving them a free $50 gift card. Would have been far more effective at $$ sales

    • I think more likely it's just terrible marketing for the giveaway, perhaps also being unlucky.

Did they advertise anywhere besides that one Facebook page?

But also they left it very late, person to person spread can take a while. Especially for something like this were you need to get people willing bother and willing to try their luck. (It seems for most stores you just had to get there perhaps 10 minutes before or something. But could easily have been longer. If people were sure they could show up 10 minutes before and get a $50 gift card, they'd likely be more willing then if they think even if they show up 30 minutes before they might still be too late.)

Maybe they were hoping Cheapies would be enough but even with Cheapies it can still take time if the deal is the sort of mild interest thing like this would be. From posts here I sorta expect it was maybe like the way 30%+ found out. Even at the store I went to one person said they heard from Cheapies, I didn't ask if they post here, possibly they don't. (They were talking to someone else who also liked Cheapies although I don't think it was how they found out.)

      • The facebook post I saw was a day old and had pretty poor interaction

        • Yeah that's the only advertising I saw and they just posted it a day before which is a terrible idea for something you need to spread around but which unlikely to have enough interest to spread fast IMO

  • Bought the Sunbeam Cafe Style 2 Slice Sandwich Maker Grill & Press for $25.

    • Was it ex-demo or some super special in store deal?

    • How many echo dots did you purchase with?

      • None. Bought too many in the past 😅. Started giving em away to family members.

  • +1

Thanks for this! Hadn’t seen the ad about it. And I happened to be going to town. Got to my local store at 9.20 and scored the last one. My lucky day! :)
