Pak n save usually has salmon at ~$45/kg forgoing the vacpack. Am i missing something?

No you are right and it's 39.99 when on special.
I don't know why this post is getting upvotes. I'll personally stick to paknsave

Higher Quality / Fresher Salmon? Bone out?

        • +3

The only two differences is the packaging and that it is bone out.

        NZ Salmon or Norweejin?

        • Bluff usually

    • This is King Salmon V cut bone out From Stewart Island. Different quality grade

As a huge Salmon fan with experience in commercial dining, I would go the extra mile to buy this over Supermarket.
Definitely higher quality and freshness - the salmon itself plus storage conditions.

Supermarket quality is probably as 'low' as it gets.
This would be medium quality range that would be entry level for raw/sashimi use.

      Decent deal in my opinion.

I encourage you to give the fresh supermarket (Paknsave/New World) stuff a go, it comes from the exact same farm/factory as big glory bay just under a different name :)

Isn't the supermarket salmon also king salmon? Only difference being bone in?

      • +2

For what it's worth - Paknsave & New World are both supplied by Big Glory Bay (Owned by Sanford Ltd) sold as Bluff Salmon in the supermarkets.

Thanks for confirming. I only buy salmon from Paknsave & New World for sashimi and was a bit concerned after seeing shiji046's comment.

          • @Superpower21: I’ve been told previously that the salmon from supermarkets aren’t fresh enough to be sashimi grade so have to be cooked. I’ve seen farro sell salmon that’s labelled as sashimi but I’m not sure how to tell the difference tbh if they weren’t labelled lol

            • @Is2u: I bought both salmon fillets and sashimi grade salmon fillets from south island before, to be honest, I feel the difference for sashimi grade is just skin off bone out, otherwise they taste pretty much the same to me. It's definitely fresher than supermarket, I would say supermarket salmon probably be the 3rd day ones.

When I buy from supermarket I always ask if it's today's salmon. I cut them up first, then put them in the freezer for 1 to 1.5 hours before I take it out to eat.

I am not quite sure about farro's salmon. You should just ask them. According to Google "Sashimi-grade fish means the seller of the fish confirms they have dealt with the fish in a way that makes it safe to eat raw. The reason for this is because a lot of fish contains either parasites or bacteria, and to eliminate any parasites fish must be frozen to the correct temperature."

I eat a lot salmon sashimi from the supermarket and I am still alive. So… I guess it's ok?

            • @Is2u: New world salmon is sashimi grade, but you need to make sure it is still chilled. Anything sitting outside in the open fridges will be risky since it was put out in the morning. You have about an 8 hour shelf life from chilled to not being of grade to eat raw.
Just ask at the seafood counter for sashimi grade and they will get it from out back.

Not a good price. My local fishmonger is also cheaper. So is Pak n save. Yes I can see the difference in name, but I can also taste/smell the difference. We're not all fish inspectors but if you're eating this three times a week raw you can tell

    • Hopefully not mercury?

  • Have to agree, price isn't amazing, seems very standard - there's places in Wellington you can get Bone-out high quality King Salmon for cheaper.

    • Where do you get yours? Keen for new options other than the average one in Lower Hutt…

I normally get mine from Moore Wilsons, they have very good prices on Mt Cook Alpine Salmon (I think they increased them slightly recently, it's been a few weeks since I bought Salmon). My last purchase was $45.95 p/kg (was a special) from there.

Also, you can pickup Salmon Steaks from Petone/Lower Hutt Pak'n'Save for 34.99/kg right now - These obviously won't be as good as Alpine Salmon from Moore Wilsons.

City New World also has Salmon Fillets for 46.99/kg atm, their stock always looks very fresh.

@samsteez: That definitely looks like a good deal, better than the OP's anyway - delivery charge looks like $22 though, so that takes it from around $35 per kg to $43 kg (i'm looking at the skin on, pin bone out version, always keep the skin!), so if you've got a big freezer, probably worth a look.

I was down that way recently actually but missed this place, it looks pretty nice! I've seen most of the Salmon farms in the South Island but IMO best quality was always Mt Cook Alpine Salmon.
