Where do you buy your dog/pet food?

Just became a first time dog (pet) owner - cavoodle puppy for the kids - and wanting to know where you dog (pet) owners regularly buy your food from? Whether kibble or wet food.

Is it cheaper to buy online from the likes of petdirect on auto/repeat delivery? Or perhaps from Amazon AU, or TWH, or part of weekly grocery shopping?

New to all this so keen for any advice ;)

  • I feed all 3 of mine raw food from feedraw.co.nz, they deliver straight to the door.
Just look for the mixes that have meat + bone + tripe so they're getting a balanced diet etc.

First thing is figuring out if you want to go down the wet or dry food route, and how premium you want to go.

Once you do that, it generally narrows your choices down a lot and then its pretty easy to compare a couple of options against the main shops of TWH, Petstock, pet.co.nz, Animates, Real Dog Food, Raw Essentials, Feed Raw, The Raw Food etc

  • Our dog is a Lab so will eat almost anything.
We prefer kibble as it's easier to handle, store and doesn't smell as much. We buy the big 8kg bags of Pam's kibble from Pak'n'Save for around $28 or one of the other brands if it's on special - usually Pedigree can be picked up quite cheap too.

Just be careful when switching brands or types of dog food if your dog has a sensitive tummy. You need to transition between types over a few days. It's not fun cleaning up diarrhea!

If you go for dry dog food, make sure it's high protein (18%+, maybe higher if it's a puppy) and it should say "complete nutrition" or similar on the bag.

I like the idea of raw dog food and they're supposed to poo less as there's no filler but I can't justify the cost.

  • Petfoodclub.co.nz

The range is not as large as the major online sites, but the pricing is in line with them, and for some major brands, they have free bags after ten purchases etc… like you normally have to pay vet prices to get

  • Dog owner for many years of different breeds both big and small dogs, I feed dry for convenience. I used to buy Black Hawk dry dog biscuits, now I buy from Costco. I buy the Natures Domain one which is grain free, was previously buying the Kirklands Signature, cost for 15kgs is around $85 as opposed to the $160 the Black Hawk was costing me.

Costco also do the Wishbone Salmon one which gets even higher points review
