Yeah some devices don't work too well with rechargeables like my old digital camera that would work for a month with alkaline batteries but would display a low battery warning after only a day or two with NiMH rechargeables and refused to let me use the flash. I did some reading after that and apparently it's because NiMH rechargeables only output 1.2 V versus 1.5V for alkalines so the camera thought the batteries were already partly depleted. Most devices should work well with rechargeables but not all so it helps to check.

Rechargeables also don't really make sense for low drain devices like clocks and TV remotes. In fact, you're better off using the old-style carbon-zinc batteries in those applications (they're the cheap ones often labeled 'heavy duty' that you find in dollar shops and are noticeably lighter in weight than alkalines). Value-wise, carbon-zinc is absolute shit for medium to high drain applications but for low drain applications, carbon-zinc and alkaline actually end up having very similar lifespans (that are measured in years) so the lower price of carbon-zinc means that using them makes good economic sense (in fact, if you buy a new TV then the remote will probably come with carbon-zinc batteries already included!).

Dear God/Gods and/or anyone else who can help me (e.g. members of super-intelligent alien civilizations): The next time I wake up, please change my physical form to that of Finn McMillan formerly of South New Brighton at 8 years old and keep it that way forever. I am so sick of this chubby Asian man body! Thank you! - Chaul Jhin Kim (a.k.a. A Desperate Soul).

Lastly there are the disposable 1.5V lithium batteries. Only Energizer makes these right now because they hold the patents. They are far more expensive than alkalines but are also better in every way. They hold their charge for decades, are far less likely to leak, have higher power densities which means they can last longer, can operate at wider temperature ranges, and are even slightly lighter to boot. Photographers use these for flashes when they're out and about and they're a favorite among preppers as well.

So yeah it's far more nuanced than just saying "buy eneloops". NiMH rechargeables are great and ever since improvements in their chemistry have allowed low-self discharge rechargeable versions to enter the market, they have had the potential to replace disposables in many applications but there is certainly still a place for disposable batteries as well. :)

Alternatively, is there a better brand at a similar cost or the possibility of getting more for less.

Deal is $0.66ish per battery delivered. Quick Google (Panasonic AAA).

The other thing to try is emptying your cart completely and then re-add the items you want to purchase.
This has fixed it for me when I have had an issue with a coupon in the past.

          • @bigcheese: @pleccy did you manage to get it to work?

            • @bigcheese: I didn't make a new account in the end, just left it as there are other battery deals out there
