Hi,
Any tips or tricks with American Express, as they keep declining my application for the Airpoints Platinum Card? All the conditions are met and I don't understand their reasoning behind the rejection.
Thanks in advance. :)

All I get is - the system decides the outcome. The rep on the phone verifies the details entered in the application and at the same time informs that the application is not successful. This has happened twice with me now. I've had a pay increment since the last application but no luck with American Express.
Would recommend waiting at least 3 months in between applications if you are rejected.
Yes, my last application was last year.
do you have other credit cards? what salary and limit are you asking for?
have you tried asking for a lower limit? also try applying for a airpoints card (not premium) the requirements for that are very low.. obviously wait 3-6 months first.
Yes, I do have other credit cards. Salary $70K, limit Auto (assigned by AE)
@haddy: Credit cardS? This is likely why you are declining plus the minimum on the platinum is larger . Just my opinion of course…
Personally think it be worth getting the free airpoints card and building trust if you really want one :) then ask custimer service after six months if you can upgrade
Also if you have laybuys type credit lines that counts as credit. Close these accounts too.
@jackvdbuk: Really? I got an Airpoints plat card approved this year. 70k salary, put any for limit, and said I have an existing credit card. For living expenses & entertainment I put a rough number between 500-1000 for both.
I do however, have top credit score built over 5+ years while I was a student and never missed a payment.
@meepo: I mean its all a guess , but if a application has mutliple credit cards already, pay wave and laybuys id guess it was that and close some off. :)
@haddy: Your credit card liability will be set at the total limit of all your cards - it doesn't matter whether you are close to the limit or not.
I would suggest getting rid of some of your cards or at least lowering some of your card limits if you want to improve your chances.
Might be worth having a look at your credit score through one of the free reports too just to see if there is anything on there that doesn't read right.

@bigcheese: Yes, I do have a couple of Credit Cards, no buy now pay later (laybuys, afterpay, etc.). Credit score can't be an issue as I'm always between 850-900. I'll try and cancel one of my other cards which I was thinking of replacing with the AE Platinum and try again in 6 months. For my expenses, I'd provided $1400-$1600 including living and leisure.

Quick Question, with the 300 airpoints promotion, if you cancel in 6 months do you get your half-annual fees refunded? Annual Fee: $195 p.a
Interested in this too. Can you ask them?
I'm fairly sure it doesn't work like that for AE since you get charged the full fee upfront when you sign up and it's not like ANZ Platinum where they charge $75 half-yearly ($150 p.a), but you get to keep your 300 airpoints once you get it. So in theory, lose the annual fee but get still gain 105 airpoints since $1 = A$1
So spend $195 to get $300. Plus 2x Koro lounge. I dont pay any fees on my other Platinum so will only keep it for a year maybe

What is their reasoning behind the rejection? Need to elaborate a bit more.
As long as you meet criteria the process should be straight forward, there aren't really any tips or tricks.
