I ordered a bunch of these the last time this deal was posted and would highly recommend. The service is great, delivery was quick, and hard drives arrived very well packaged in boxes. I actually messaged them personally and paid via PayPal (not through eBay) so didn't have to pay any additional GST etc. All hard drives have been working flawlessly since Feb/March this year.

    • +1

How did you manage to avoid paying GST? Didn't FedEx or customs ask for it on import? Interested as well 😁

      • +4

Keep it under $1000 NZD and you won't get asked to pay GST. Probably don't order 3 as with exchange rate fluctuations that's a bit close to to the $1000 threshold.

        • +1

Yes, that's exactly right and how I did it. As long as the total order value is less than NZ $1,000 then you're fine.

          • +2

@Baby Groot: how did you contact them directly? I can't see any way how.

            • @spyker: I too would love to have their contact deets

            • @spyker: There is a skype handle mentioned in Store's about us section. Not sure if that's the best way, but it is one way to contact them

              Skype: robin2011qiu

              @spyker: [email protected]

The above is the email address they sent me after I contacted them directly through eBay. I referenced their eBay page for the HDDs I was after and asked to purchase a couple and have them sent to NZ. They confirmed total cost and gave me their PayPal account details (which matched their store details). If you pay via PayPal you should be covered by buyer protection:

              https://www.paypal.com/nz/webapps/mpp/paypal-buyer-protectio…

              • +1

@Baby Groot: When you told them that you wanted to purchase the drives directly instead of through ebay, what did you say? That you wanted to buy it to avoid gst, or what was the reasoning you gave? Also did you pay in aud or nzd or usd?

                • +1

@Latex Fist: I just asked if I could buy a couple at the US price (which currently is $188) and they confirmed total cost and sent through their PayPal details. I never mentioned GST.

                  • +2

@Baby Groot: Thanks for the contact details.

I just went through process of purchasing from them over email.

They offered $178 USD per unit.

Paid through paypal, after fees came to $637.95 NZD for two. ($318.975 each)

                    • +1

@spyker: No worries, let us know how you get on. I remember the postage being incredibly quick.

                    • @spyker: Ah bugger, didn't think to ask for a discount, I paid the 188 usd. I used my wise card to pay with usd though, so only ended up being 304 nzd for the one drive. Paypal really sting you hard on the currency conversions.

                      • +1

@honza: Yes, PayPal currency conversion fees do seem high.

                    • +1

@spyker: I got $175 usd ea for 2. Did they mention shipping at all to you or inclusive?

                      Via paypal;
                      $591.28 NZD = $350.00 USD
                      1 NZD = $0.5919 USD

Oops they asked for "send friend" which I didn't do. That was probably the $ saved.

                      • +1

@Monk: "Oops they asked for "send friend" which I didn't do. That was probably the $ saved."

I did the same, fees for my purchase would have been about $11 usd higher if I'd paid via send friend, also no buyer protection. I figured they were saving eBay fees anyway and they would decline if they didn't want the deal.

                        "$591.28 NZD = $350.00 USD"

Ouch, get yourself a Wise card
                        $565.12 nzd = $350 usd live rate 0.622250

Anyway still a good deal, you're winning the $$$/Tb here.

@honza: Thanks. I’ll check it out.
I offered to send more $ to cover fees. He declined.

I did honestly miss his request to send as friend, but I definitely would never do it.

I got my tracking number this morning.

                          • @Monk: PayPal changed their policy a few years back so even personal payments tend to have quite high fees if international. (It used to be that if you managed to get a PayPal balance you could make international personal payments for very low or even no fees. Card payments were still a little dear although I think still cheaper than merchant ones.)

PayPal fees are way too complicated for me to work out https://www.paypal.com/nz/cshelp/article/whats-the-differenc… and https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees however I think nowadays they actually end up quite similar if making an international personal payment as a merchant transaction will cost. But IIRC you can chose to pay the fee if making personal payments. So I think that's what honza is saying, Eastbay suggested they make a personal payment with them paying the fees but it other than the loss of payment protection it wouldn't have saved anything actually cost more.

I don't know what Easybay Digital's account is I assume either HK or US. If it's US then US customers can probably save a a small amount by personal payment especially if they're using a balance or funding from a bank (which they can do unlike us) since this is still I think free https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/whats-the-differenc… , although with the lost of payment protection. But it doesn't work for us.

I mean Eastbay Digital might also be trying to get around the PayPal buyer protection but since they seem to honour warranties long past the point where you can get your money back, including paying for shipping I sort feel this isn't their primary motivation. (Although acknowledging people can probably get their money back in PayPal in situations that Eastbay Digital feels is unfair.)

BTW if PayPal's conversion is high can't you just use your card's one? Even if it's not Wise it's probably still a fair amount better than PayPal. PayPal likes to make it difficult but AFAIK you can still tell them to charge you in USD somehow you just have to find where they've hidden it.

    • +1

Wouldn't that also remove your ebay protection?

      • +1

Yes. Absolutely. Unless you trust the seller.

      • +1

Yes, it would remove any eBay protection but if you pay using PayPal, you should have buyer protection:

        https://www.paypal.com/nz/webapps/mpp/paypal-buyer-protectio…

        • +1

Question about the PayPal though, I've seen on ozbargain that eastdigital will push for the friends and family method, so that you don't get the buyer protection. How do you manage that scenario?

I've emailed them without response yet.

          • @Latex Fist: I wasn't required to do that and it's not something I would do. As you're purchasing a Hard Drive from a business, you must select the 'a purchase for goods and services (“Paying for an item or service”)' option when paying and you will also be protected.

PayPal does state 'the seller pays a small fee to receive your money' using this method so I'm guessing that's why they may have suggested to some to use the friends and family method, but they shouldn't do that.

I would suggest to anyone looking to purchase, if they give you a price you're happy with via PayPal, always choose the [correct] option of 'a purchase for goods and services' and then you're covered. If they specifically mention/push for using 'Friends and Family' payment method, then I would suggest not doing it and you could purchase through eBay (with eBay protection) albeit at a slightly higher price.

If they get back to your email, let us know what they say.

@Baby Groot: Just received this back right now:

              Hello,

              two of the ST16000NM000J $185/pcs。

You can transfer money directly via send friend,

              My paypal account is:[email protected]

              • @Latex Fist: Thanks. It's the same PayPal account I used in the past, but I double-checked my original email communication from earlier this year, and they never mentioned "send friend" back then. Maybe PayPal sale fees etc have gone up (like everything else) in that time. You could always ask how much it would be for two using the 'a purchase for goods and services (“Paying for an item or service”)' option? The price plus fees etc then might start becoming close to the eBay offering? Looking through the posts here, they seem to be offering different people different prices too which is odd.

I guess, for complete peace of mind/protection, go through eBay. Otherwise, you could always just go through PayPal but select the 'a purchase for goods and services (“Paying for an item or service”)' option? It's up to them whether they pay the fee and complete the sale or they don't, in which case you'd receive a refund (although could be a bit of a hassle).

                • @Baby Groot: Yea I emailed them back yesterday about the pp freind thing and if there was any further discount they could give, and I guess I've been ignored. No further response from them 😅

  • +1

I tried to order a 16Tb drive from these guys earlier this year, fast postage and super well packed. It ended up being DOA but the returns/refund process was free and no hassle.

I've only heard good things from others and am happy to try again, went the outside eBay direct email route and am confident that things will go smoothly, I'll do a follow up once it's delivered.

  • I emailed them to buy direct and they said to buy through the 'platform'.

    • That's the answer they gave me until I pressed to buy direct.

    • +1

I would have assumed it was better for them to sell outside of eBay as they would avoid eBay sales fees.

  • +1

Bit the bullet and grabbed one. $317.60 NZD ($188 USD) after emailing directly.

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up, I emailed and bought 2 via PP for $175 each, much appreciated 😃

    • Damn, they offered you two at $175 each? Wonder why I got 185 as the quote.

  • That’s still a great price especially when it includes FedEx shipping maybe I got it slightly cheaper for buying 2 😂

  • +2

    Arrived today. Testing later

    • Nice. Do update on the feedback and let us know thanks.

    • +1

Got mine today too, already in PC and everything seems fine. I'll be grabbing another next time they go on special

      • What's the noise level on them like?

        • Normal to quiet, I've been transferring my entire photo/video catalog via lightroom and dont notice it. Up to almost 10Tb transferred so far without issue.

  • +1

Arrived for me today. Tested one so far and looks to be working well.

Mine arrived yesterday, well packaged and working in my NAS, so far so good, thanks OP

  • Thanks OP. Ordered some via email ($175 ea) on the 20th and they arrived today :)

Found their website via google. Seems like you can buy direct via PayPal with even better NZD price (legally Inc tax and free shipping)

WD Ultrastar 16TB WUH721816ALE6L4 SATA HC550 Sale price $221.00 NZD

    • Perfect, that makes buying much easier as they declined my direct paypal paying method when I emailed them last time. Also free shipping!

    • +3

I'll take one for the team. Ordered 2x WD Ultrastar 14TB USED.

Can't complain at 28TB for $348 (maybe I will if they fail..)

      • Nice! I mean you cant really go wrong with those either: enterprise grade and 3 year warranty from them (I think neology is only a year for their used drives - and you have to pay extra).

Will be curious to see the SMART data when you get them, if you wouldn't mind sharing.

        • +2

Both arrived via Fedex. Both packaged well, sealed anti-static bags and HDD shaped foam to hold the drives.

@itakestime: Many thanks for that detailed SMART data.

Roughly 3 years of 24/7 usage, with 90TB written / 310TB read for both, but the fact that you get a 3 year warranty on those is pretty good!! (iirc)

            • @Moodkiller: Running an extended SMART test for good measure before I'll chuck them into my server.

    • Hmmm - store page doesn't exist anymore?? Thats concerning and disappointing

        Yikes, right as mine arrived

      • damn…still deciding lol

        • Lol, dont think you can go wrong with the refurbs, especially if the warranty was what I recalled. Otherwise go new.

  • I ordered 2 of these last time and agree that they came fast and seem good. The only thing I would say is they are a little bit louder than normal drives with clicks and whirrs occassionally

      • Nice. 14TB Barracuda pro looks like the sweet spot for me. Any thoughts on that vs Exos. Google seem to say quieter but not rated to enterprise application so less sturdy/reliable?
