Vanessa Hatley-Owen, who works as a librarian at an Auckland school, says the idea for the story came about while she was on a family holiday at the beach. “It was a combination of memories of summer holidays at Mt Maunganui as a youngster, and enjoying time at the beach and in the surf with my own children.”
