10% Price Beat (vs. Online Travel Agencies & Some Competitor Airlines) @ Jetstar

230

This is a long-running deal, but as far as I can see it hasn't been posted before. The price beat applies to both flights on competitor airlines as well as JQ flights offered at a cheaper price elsewhere.

For competitor flights, the terms are a bit finnicky - for domestic or trans-tasman flights the cheaper competitor flight needs to leave within an hour of the JQ flight you want to get on.

Where this deal shines, I reckon, are finding JQ flights on an online travel agency and trying to price beat that price. E.g. JQ has a flight from AKL to WLG for $46 ($41 with Club Jetstar, but that's irrelevant). eDreams has it for $40.89. After the price beat, that comes to $37.24. A sweet $3.65 saving on the eDreams price, and booked direct with the airline to boot!

Some practical tips:

  • don't go through the normal live chat, go through the "Apply now" button from the price beat guarantee page;
  • the agent will ask for a screenshot of the competitor price as well as the URL - they sometimes check this URL, but the chat interface sometimes truncates long URLs and so the operator can sometimes say that the competitor website doesn't work (or needs a URL), so you might need to politely push back (and ask to talk to the manager). just keep politely pushing;
  • to upload the screenshot, they'll enable file upload via the chat interface, but you won't be able to upload until they do;
  • it's not quiiiiiiite a 10% price beat because they'll charge a credit card fee when you pay (of 1.5%), and POLI doesn't seem to be available (as it seems to go through their Australian website). i've written to them about this, but expect nothing to change;
  • it takes a punishingly long time for them to do the price beat, so my usual approach is to have the live chat window open to the side and keep working (but be careful to make sure the chat doesn't time out).

All in all, a punishingly long process for very modest financial gain, which is exactly what Cheapies is all about.

Deal should go well with this crop of cheap fares posted this morning by beatthatflight

  • Wish knew about this few weeks back.

    • thoughts and prayers

      • Haha. Not sure if it would have been worth spending time to get few bucks off. But with 4xtickets to AU, could have been some good discount i guess.

    • Bet 🤌🏻

  • In my experience when I've dealt with them over the phone they make this as difficult as possible - often claiming that they can't see the cheaper rate listed on Air NZ - it genuinely feels like they are encouraged to stall as much as possible.

    Agree that the the best way is to pull the 'speak to the manager' card - who, magically, are able to view the competing prices on their systems.
    Can feel like a bit of a dick move, but consumers aren't trying to game the system here.

    • I suggest using the online chat (via the price beat page) rather than calling. If you have it open in another window then you can do something else at the same time…

      • I used this tonight and it worked well. Thank you for posting this. Also as a FYI - you're right - the link they give goes via the Australia Jetstar website and the option to pay by POLi doesn't come up. I went to the live chat and asked them how I could pay by the POLi option mentioned on the page, they first said I couldn't then after I said it was misleading they said I could use my booking reference via the NZ Jetstar website and use the POLi payment option on there. They provided me with this link - https://booking.jetstar.com/mmb/#/login?culture=en-nz& - I logged in via it and sure enough POLi was an option for payment - maybe this link could be added above for future users.
        Thanks again, I saved on my flight fares and I'm feeling grateful :)

  • What does ‘JQ’ stand for?

    • It's just the unique two letter code used to denote Jetstar flights.
      It doesn't stand for anything.
