Ten Minutes of Legal Advice for $29 @ Spilt Milk Law

440
29CHEAPIES

May as well jump on the leap year deal bandwagon. Pay $29, use promo code 29CHEAPIES, ask a legal question, get as much of an answer as I can realistically provide in 10 minutes.

Don't ask me to draft an entire will.

Do:

  • ask me a specific and relatively simple legal question
  • attach a document or two if you think a quick skim will help
  • make sure your question is clear, so I can actually answer it within the 10 minutes.

It doesn't get much cheaper than this, folks. Even cut-price psychic mediums advertising in the Trademe classifieds section can't do deals this good.

  • What's the normal 10 minute price?

    • +1

A quick google search suggests a NZ lawyer charges between $150 to $500 per hour and of course young lawyers are on the lower end. I consulted a lawyer before and she charged about $225+GST per hour. So if junior lawyers do 10 minutes slots it would cost between $25 to $37+GST.
And an experienced lawyer at the higher end may charge $60-$70+gst /10 minutes.

Thanks for that. Now it does look more like an ad campaign rather than a deal, doesn't it :)

        • In a larger practice, a lawyer with the 8 years' experience I have would be charging a lot more than $150/h. It's quite common in law firms to charge almost that much for law clerks, graduates, and non-legally trained support staff.

I think the key point is that the market price for ten minutes of legal question-answering is probably more than 1/6th the lawyer's hourly rate. I don't see many (any?) other lawyers offering this service. Some will have a chat to you for free, but those free chats are often pretty sales-pitchy.

Anyway, give it a downvote if you think it's a bad deal - if enough people downvote then that would be useful signal when considering whether to post again.

          • @SpiltMilk: $180 an hour for something that you are unlikely to be working 8 hours a day is definitely very reasonable….'cheap' even.

Realistically, 10 mins of legal phone call, with overheads you probably spent 15-20 mins on it.

I think it is a very generous offer. I can't imagine many lawyers offering 10 mins for $29 (I am assuming that is inclusive of GST as well, whereas the rates quoted in the thread will generally be exclusive).

As noted elsewhere, in reality it will involve more than 10 mins - likely at least 20 mins, maybe longer.

For starters, basic professional standards require that you document everything, and that takes time, but very few people who are not professionals will have any real understanding.

  • Can you help with advice that relates to disputes tribunal? I am thinking about filing a dispute but wouldn't mind some advice before I do.

    • Yes, I help quite a lot of clients with DT claims. I can't represent you in the Tribunal, but I can advise on a potential claim and, if you did go ahead, could also help with drafting a claim/notes to talk to on the day.

  • Can you do legal research for me on historic milk regulations in the Wellington area?

    • He knows everything about it.

      sigh

Look, I might only be the second-best municipal milk licencing lawyer in Wellington, but I'm probably by far the cheapest.

  • Only just saw this. It's a bit late but will upvote and hope you run this again in the future. Good on you - it's a good deal. Plus, good name!

    • extended it for one more day, so feel free to hook into it if you've got a question

      • Will do thanks!

      • @SpiltMilk do we just fill out the form for a $99 consult and enter the code? Thanks

        • yep

  • Would you guys be a good choice for my half of a separation agreement?

    • If you have a house and will be buying out your ex-partner's share then no, as I don't do conveyancing work or operate a trust account. Otherwise (if no house, or if your ex partner is buying out your share of a house) then yes, would be happy to assist.

      • what if we're selling the house mutually and just want something on paper regarding the proceeds and marital property?

        • Sure - can definitely assist. Feel free to email (tyrone [AT] spiltmilk.nz) or there's an option on the website to request an estimate for a more complex piece of work. The more information you can provide, the easier it will be for me to offer you a pretty firm estimate of the time required and price.
