$300 Energy Credit When Signing up for a New Mobile Plan (Existing Contact Energy Customers) @ Contact

210

I can't quite work this out. Seems if you move your mobile number to contact, they'll give you $300 credit on your electricity bill.

All their plans are open term.

They seem to have a $40 a month plan, so in theory one month and you could bail?

We’ve got something special for you for being a Contact customer. You’ll ring up a $300 energy account credit when you bring your mobile phone home to us before 30 April.^

All you need to do is join Contact mobile using the same name and email address that you use for your energy account. Have your energy account number handy as you’ll need to enter that too (you can find this on your last bill). We’ll add your $300 credit to your energy account within 7 days.

^ Promotion only available to new Contact mobile customers. Contact reserves the right to cancel, modify or suspend this promotion at any time and shall not be liable for any loss or damage incurred as a result. The credit is not transferable, refundable or redeemable for cash or cash equivalents.

They have WhatsApp and Messenger. Have pinged them to see what they say.

If this works, you could technically just get a throwaway SIM for like $1~$2, bring multiple numbers across and earn $260 of profit per number, then cancel your plan after 1 month.

I presume only once per Energy account tho? Surely…

      Let us know!

      • Luckily, I own a few properties and so I can open an account per property lol. We'll see.

    • Where can you get an activated SIM for $2? Don’t you have to pay for a plan normally?

      • Right now - Spark & Skinny $1, 2degrees $2 at PB Tech
You can get a One NZ SIM for $2 delivered direct from One NZ.
There are always retailers that sell these SIM cards on promo for this price.

As far as a plan goes, you only need to to have an active plan to make calls and txt.
Receiving calls and txt is free.

    • Following to see what they advise. Will be interested to take their other deal

So I got my reply back from Contact Energy.

      • This applies to existing Contact Energy customers only.
      • It doesn't matter what you're subscribed to. You could have only Gas on your account and it'd still apply.
      • Credit applies per Contact Energy account. You can port multiple numbers over but you'd still only get $300 credit max.
      • Mobile plan is billed monthly, but the plans are open term

Luckily, I have 3 properties that are on Contact Energy, so looks like I'll be getting about $780 in profit just by using 3 throwaway SIMs to port the numbers over lol.

      • What is the senders email address? If i search contact i get several return but nothing from contact email addresses. So im not eligible unless i got the email is that correct?

        • Not sure I understand your question.

Are you trying to get in touch with Contact and want to know what email to send your enquiries to? Or are you simply trying to signup to the mobile plan deal?

From what I know, you need to already be a Contact Energy customer. From there, you sign into your account and then you click on the link in OP to sign up for the mobile plan and port your number over. Nothing to do with sender email address.

          • @NovaAlpha: Ah i saw a message down below you now must now have recieved an emaila bout the promo to be eligble.. was hoping youll know what email address they send it from

  • So I can switch over a phone and broadband for a month and get a $600 credit?

  • I've switched to free weekends and broadband plan and received this offer in January. Can report have had no issues with broadband and yet to pay a bill thanks to the $300.

Nice, we've got 3 months free right now from the newborn deal this'll essentially keep that going for another 1-2 months!

    • Do they run it only once every few months? Just had a baby born in Feb

      • Longer interval I think. Quick search of Cheapies history shows 3x since 2022

How is using a throwaway SIM gotta do with your privacy?

Besides, privacy is a joke these days. You want privacy? Then move off the grid completely. No social media, no smartphones, as everything tracks you. Don't use Google search, don't use ChatGPT and your browser better be equipped with extensions like NoScript, block WebRTC leaks and various other things. You better not use an OS that does analytics and tracking in the background. And you better not use Netflix or Youtube, because those track you as well. There's nothing that doesn't track you or use your info in some way.

And if you really want to protect your mobile usage from being tracked, use a VPN or something. Oh but guess what, VPN providers can also sell your data.

Cheapies probably also track you in some ways, we just don't know it.

Yeah, good luck trying to stay off-grid completely.

Impressive to name those! A lot of those services only know you are a human with certain characteristics, but not your identifiable information, which is okay or make most people feel safe.
But some services really know your personal identity, what your legal name is, where you live and work, along with your other activity patterns, those are my privacy concerns.

I don't know how much margin a lot of utility companies resell mobile service they got from telco wholesale market, probably very low or negative. I also don't know why there are so many players in the market outside of big telcos. What's their motivation to enter this space?

        • So you're OK with some level of privacy-invasion then. In that case, it's all just subjective on what the boundary is.

I mean, if you buy stuff online from e.g. Amazon, then they sure know about your credit card details, what bank the credit card is with, your name and address and phone number and your spending habits, the things you like, etc. And if you use a Xiaomi phone that isn't modified to remove built-in ads and trackers, then it'll send data to Chinese servers (which you can see in the logs). This isn't something a normal person would know or even see, a lot of the tracking is done under the hood and you just don't know it.

Far too many people think their data is important and their privacy is important. It's not really. And I bet you don't use burner numbers or burner emails like Bulc.Club or SimpleLogin to hide as much identity as you can.

And who cares if they know where you live and work? If you put up your CV somewhere, whether it's Seek or Linkedin or even shared with a job recruiter, your information is with them. You can't apply for a job without exposing your data to an extent.

If you're so concerned about privacy and you're trying to make a point about it, yet you welcome some level of privacy-invasion or at least tolerate it to some extent, then it just seems like you're not credible/qualified to even talk about it in the first place.

And who cares if telco companies or energy companies know a little about you? Unless you generate your own energy and go 100% off-grid, none of this matters in the grand scheme of things. It's so pointless when people are paranoid about privacy when more than half the population have no idea about how to protect themselves in the first place, because they're far too concerned with using Instagram, Facebook and whatnot.

          • -1

@NovaAlpha: If you think you are accredited/qualified to talk about this, then you should be able to answer my question straight, but apart from the point you make like "I don't care but I know more about this" I don't really think you're more qualified. And to be honest, who cares if you are qualified or not on cheapies, most likely a qualified professional will not hang out on cheapies…

            My question is:
I don't know how much margin a lot of utility companies resell mobile service they got from telco wholesale market, probably very low or negative. I also don't know why there are so many players in the market outside of big telcos. What's their motivation to enter this space?

            • -1

@kinglock: Never said I was qualified to talk about this. Having said that, I do hack into stuff and have reversed engineered a lot of enterprise based systems that costs literally millions to implement (looking at you Microsoft), so I know a thing or 2 about security and data protection and privacy is sort of relevant here.

Privacy is a joke these days and to me, it's just a term that's thrown around by people who pretend to know what it means but in reality barely understand it and barely even knows how to protect themselves. All they do is shout and complain. You certainly haven't made any points about how to protect your privacy in real meaningful ways and certainly haven't countered any of the points I've made. All you've done is said privacy is bad blah blah and you don't understand the motivation of telcos. Who cares Karen.

Your only "question" prior to my last comment was "What's their motivation to enter this space" and I honestly don't care. I don't work for telco companies and I certainly don't speak for them. You can go ask them.

You're the one here shouting about privacy being an issue. And yet, you're OK with a certain level of privacy invasion. Rather hypocritical.

You obviously won't stop buying stuff from e.g. Amazon, won't stop using Google products like their search or Android phones (which track you in various ways), won't stop using social media (which also track you and have been known to sell data to 3rd parties in order to show relevant ads or whatnot to you), etc. Everything is tracking you. And the general public only knows about these things because they've been caught and exposed. Just because you don't hear news about XYZ company, doesn't mean they're not tracking you in some way. Millions of users use TikTok and despite the big uproar about this getting banned in USA, people still use it and they don't care. So again, what is privacy to most people? None of this matters and having 1 less company tracking you doesn't change anything. You're still tracked in some other ways by some other companies. It's just a moot discussion.

Like I said, if you're so concerned, use a throwaway SIM. Your mobile usage data won't be tracked, since you won't be using the SIM anyway. Again, your point is moot if you just use a throwaway SIM.

And how is your point about mobile usage data being tracked even relevant? Are you saying you DON'T use mobile data at all? Then you shouldn't use any form of internet because your ISP can track you as well.

Unless you're the president, nobody is that important. Nobody really cares about your data, unless you are a supermodel or hot chick and people want to look at your nudes. Don't pretend you're someone who is important and that your privacy matters, because it doesn't. And this applies to 99% of people out there.

And to be honest, who cares if you are qualified or not on cheapies, most likely a qualified professional will not hang out on cheapies…

Are you implying that Cheapies users are low-lives or bums? Whoever said that only non-qualified people who aren't professionals in any way shape or form can use Cheapies? Cheapies is a site for good deals that anyone can look into.

  • Do you actually have to bring your number across though or just join them?

"All you need to do is join Contact mobile using the same name and email address that you use for your energy account."

    • Yeah looks like you just have to join, but maybe you can also port your existing number over as well when you activate your SIM (after you receive it in the post).
I just signed up - so will see what happens. You do not actually get charged until you activate your SIM too.

    • I can confirm that I received the 300 Contact Energy credit before I ever activated my sim, or even received my sim.

I just had to make sure I put in my contact energy account number when creating my Contact Mobile account.

I'm probably not going to even bother switching over now, I'm already on One NZ with an identical plan.

I can't seem to find any terms and conditions for this particular promotion. Can anyone see if there's a requirement to have your phone plan with them for a certain duration - or could I bring my phone over for a single month, claim the credit, then go back to my previous provider?

  • So considering it's for new customers only, I am assuming you won't be eligible if you have taken advantage of 3 months free mobile plan last year right? Has anyone tried it?

  • +4

Signed up yesterday, SIM card already out for delivery today. Fingers crossed it works out!

I only joined contact two months ago and already got 300 broadband credit, 300 for referrals and now another 300 for the mobile sign up. This covers nearly half my annual power bill.

    • Same! I hope they don’t retract the promo. I will update id they do.

  • +1

Just to note before you go looking on their website for this promotion like me to sign up to power - I talked to their live chat and they mentioned this promotion was sent to existing customers via email. The agent said "Hi there! 😊️ If you received the email for the promotion you are eligible and you can sign up for our mobile product here - https://contactmobile.co.nz/sim-select-product
If you received the email and sign up for the promotion you will need to make sure you use the same details for sign up as your energy account ⚡️. It's currently only been sent out to existing customers sorry so can't guarantee you will get the email if you signed up now 😕️."

Just an fyi that this implies to me that people who sign up for power now may not be eligible potentially?

Edit: Confirmed they have said "No sorry, it is only customers who receive the promo by email 😊️"

  • +1

Hmm, the banner seems to have disappeared from their website as linked.

  • I've lost the banner too, but about getting a SIM: when I went to sign up, the cost was $40 for the first month plus $0 for a physical SIM. Seems the easiest way?

  • Got the sim today but don't know if I want to try activating it as I didn't get the promo email and don't want to waste $40.

    • Talk to live chat. I signed up too via the initial banner and didn't receive the 'targeted' email. I messaged contact mobile and asked if I was eligible for the promo and they confirmed I was - so worth just talking to them to see.

  • Do we need to click on the banner to get this deal?

  • +3

Can confirm. I signed up for mobile using my account number and same email.

Ordered sim that arrived in 2 days

Checked contact app and saw 300 credit already applied to my account. I'm still gonna buy a small $40 recharge for a month as I have visitors and they need one.

Made the account to just post this comment haha cheers

    • +1

So you got the deal even though you did not get the email from contact?

      • +1

I searched my mails but did not find any email regarding this deal. I did message them on messenger to confirm though, before ordering the sim and they told me I'm eligible.

        • Ah k, let me check with them as well. Thanks

    • did you activate the sim before the credit?

      • Na haven't done that yet

  • +2

Update (19 Mar 2024): Got the following reply from Contact Mobile re eligibility:

If you have received an email of the $300 promotion deal then you will be eligible, but if not, then you will be sent an email in the near future. Currently only people with an email right now are eligible, but once you have an email sent to then you will become eligible. Do not worry every one will receive this offer eventually.

    Hope that helps :)

    • I got the same response. Going to wait until I get the email as don’t want to risk loosing $40 on it.

  • I confirm this. I received the email with the promotion, and I've signed up for a $40 plan. The sim card is yet to arrive, but I already have the $300 credit on my Contact account after 2 days of submitting the information.

  • Has anyone that signed up for the $40 pm plan also successfully cancelled without any issues yet?

  • Got the email today.

  • Have signed up for this. Got the $300 but have not activated yet. Could not find in the terms as to how long before I need to activate the sim? or what happens if I don't activate at all.

    • I would like to know this as well if anyone knows, thank you!

  • Anyone can forward the email to me? Cannot find any related promotion running on their website.

    • Same here please

      • Any luck getting a copy of the email?

  • how long does it take to get the credit?

    • only took mine few working days, within a week.

      • thanks signed up Thursday but yet to recieve credits!

        • Me too

  • +1

I haven’t really gotten anywhere with this at all. I’ve signed up using the banner link on their website on the 14th which they have now removed (a bit sus) received my new SIM card and activated it, chose the small $40 plan. Have waited more than 7 days and still no credit has been applied to my account.

Rang contact energy support and they weren’t very helpful as they said the mobile side of things is a different department. So I am now waiting for a livechat response from their mobile team which takes hours to accept your chat request.

    • I wont be activating the sim untill i get my credit :P

    • Interesting. I haven't even activated my sim card yet, but the $300 appeared in my account within a couple of days of ordering :/

    • I had the same situation. I waited for more than 7 days before activate. No credits. Contacted the online chat, they told me I will need to activate and wait 7days. We will see.

  • +2

    Got my email 5th April.

    3 months free too

    • dude, so glad I waited. Got my $300 (w/o activation yet) plus 3 months unlimited plan. So $540 value vs. $260

Is there a simple cancel or suspend option in the app?

      • +1

I searched through the app and online interface and did not find any option to cancel or suspend. I'm pretty sure I opened every menu item. Looks like you have to call.

    • After a month and still no Email. I've been a Contact Energy power & broadband user for more than a year now.

      • To join, ask about bonus credit or cancel? From online reviews, Contact is really really bad at communications, so am abit worried about account related matters. Uh oh. Better setup some backup plans now.

        • I just want to join and get the $300 power credit. I use a new Kogan $5 starter pack SIM card every month for data.

          • @Avantime: I got that promo email which made things more straight forward.

  • Does 'activating the SIM' simply mean putting it into the phone? Basically, as long as you don't insert the SIM into the phone, the plan/billing won't start, right? I want to double-check because my mobile account status is showing 'active.' I hope this doesn't mean my plan has already been activated.

    • I didn't even activate the sim. I asked their support what would happen if I had another option I preferred, and they said if it's not activated, the sim and account will just 'time out', so no charge.
