  • So cheap, I wanna go just for the price :/

    • +1

      Add $140 for a visa.

      • Same, want to take family just got the price. Is visa pretty straight forward. Also should I just randomly pick one city or do you guys recommend a particular one.

        • Shanghai would be great if you like megatropolis (lots of shopping)

I've recently done the visa process which I found easy as the application is done online. Only thing I didn't like was changing my supporting documents from PDF to JPG as this is the only format their online process accepts. Tedious because I had seven hotel bookings, all two page PDF's to convert to JPG, stitch together and then upload as one supporting document. You also don't get email updates so you have to log into the website daily to check the status of your application and it will tell you when you can go to the embassy.

You will need to upload a passport photo so make sure it's white background and not grey or other dark background colour. You'll get a barcode to print/save on your phone which you then take to the embassy. Auckland is where I went - Green Lane, hidden off the main road with very limited parking at the embassy. Paid parking in the surrounding area or good luck if you want to park on a nearby street and walk.

Passports can only be taken in the morning before lunch as they only do inwards transactions then. You'll be turned away if you go in the afternoon. Take a number, wait to be called, then the staff will scan your barcode, ask for your passport, tell you you can only enter once and not stay longer than 30 days, they retain your passport and give you a receipt with the time/date to return for collection.

Passport collections are in the afternoon only so when the time passes as per your receipt, you go to the embassy to collect the passport but don't go in the morning or you will be turned away and told to come back in the afternoon as this is when they do their outward things. Their online system won't tell you it's ready. Make sure you have the receipt. Don't lose it. Make a copy ASAP and take a picture of it just in case.

Fee for my tourist visa was $105 - card payments only on-site. I'm off next month thanks to a deal OP posted a while back. Thanks OP! ๐Ÿฅณ

          • @cappylemmy: you going by yourself? any tour?

            • @justaddwater: By myself. Hangzhou/Shanghai, Beijing, Taiyuan, Xi'An, Chengdu and "little" towns in between. 28 days going with the flow, exploring and trying to do other things beside the major tourist spots. Oh and getting fatter with all the cheap food ๐Ÿ˜‚

              • @cappylemmy: You don't speak Chinese do you?

                • +1

@justaddwater: Just graduated to Section 2 in duolingo ๐Ÿ˜‚. I know enough to get me around and can recognise some characters but Iโ€™ll definitely have a translate app open a lot of the time ๐Ÿ˜‚

          • +1

@cappylemmy: Great info, just make sure you get AliPay sorted on your phone (See Youtube tutorials), and buy enough international roaming data before departure as roaming data bypasses the great firewall, but note signal coverage may be spotty.

            • @Avantime: WeChat and Alipay all setup ready to go. Glad they allow foreign cards now. You just canโ€™t hold a balance as a foreigner but at least you can pay and have things deducted right from the linked card ๐Ÿ˜Š. I usually get a SIM card there. Roaming with an NZ number is eyewatering ๐Ÿ‘€

                @cappylemmy: Buy an e-sim from 3 HK from https://www.three.com.hk/prepaid/DIY/en/offer/travel/

                HK$138(equivalent to NZ$30) for 30 days 15GB
                HK$268(equivalent to NZ$58) for 365 days 40GB + 5GB Social Data
covering your roaming within Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macau. No need to VPN as your IP will always be Hong Kong. Data combo can be purchased again within the term if you need more.

The only thing is that you need activate it using its 3 HK app:
In IOS, it is not available in NZ app store. You will need an Apple ID within Chinese mainland, Hong Kong or Macau region.
In Android, you can download it from Apkpure https://m.apkpure.com/my3/hk.com.three.my3plus
You can use an Android phone to activate it and use it on an iPhone if it is easier for you.

          • @cappylemmy: remember to avoid the week of 1st May.

  • Great prices, thanks for always finding these. Had an incredible trip to Japan via Fiji last year thanks to one of your posts.

Any good flights to Amsterdam in October per chance?

    • That's awesome! Glad to help.

It's funny, single return tickets from NZ keep coming up at like $2k. But there's another way. Return ticket to MEL (Jetstar for cheap, since you're in Chch, there's no direct Jetstar to Syd), then get a cheaper flight from there.

Also worth considering a flight to China and then across, or even Japan.

How long you looking to go, and what's earliest/latest you'd consider? Might run a script if I get a chance.

      • Looking to fly either end of September or early October, for about 2.5/3 weeks.

So far have been looking at CHC-SIN-AMS on Singapore Airlines for the most direct route, or CHC-AKL-HKG-IST-AMS with Turkish Airlines for a godawful route at the same price that at least gets me a three day trip to Turkey if I book it as two separate return trips.

        • Hmm. What prices you finding for those? You've picked basically slap bang on school holidays, which doesn't help :/

          • @beatthatflight: <$3000 for Singapore, <$2800 for CHC-IST return + IST-AMS return. The timing isn't ideal for cheap flights, but I really want to see a friend when he's not busy with work and also catch the autumn colours haha.

Hi! Big fan of your posts :) About to head to Japan via Fiji thanks to your deals!!!
Would like to go to Europe in September but the prices I've found are shocking! (~$2.5-3k return. Last time I went pre-covid was only $1.6k… got a great deal via KoreanAir). Going for 3.5 weeks, can leave in late Aug as well.
Would you be please run a script for AKL to UK or Italy (or anywhere close enough to those places to get a cheap Ryanair flight over)

    • I'll likely be flying to Italy in August too if everything goes according to plan! I'll only need a one-way though.

  • Took this flight last weekend, sharing so others might not land in the same situation.

    Bangkok to Haikou to Auckland.

Check in at Bangkok took forever as the airline canโ€™t do an automatic luggage transfer to the final destination.
Had a layover of 12 hours at Haikou and had to pass immigration and collect the bags and hold them till the next flight as you can check in the bags only 3 hours before the flight, was quite a bit of run around for me and I wouldnโ€™t book this one again.
