ShopBack is about to launch in New Zealand

Got this from a reliable source that ShopBack is about to launch in New Zealand on their NZ website.

https://shopback.co.nz/

They had quite a successful launch in Australia back in 2018 and the competition between a few cashback sites there has been generally beneficial to the consumers. We have had supports for a few local cashback sites for quite a few years as well (KiwiWallet, ShopRewards, etc) but their "special cashback deals" are few and far between. Hopefully with more competition it would heat up the market.

For those who aren't sure about how cashback site works, basically

  • You click on their own tracking links to redirect to the merchant's website
  • After you make the purchase on the merchant's site, they get notified about the transaction and they'll receive some commission after the transaction has been finalised (usually 2-3 months)
  • After they receive the commission, they'll rebate part or all of it back to you

Cashback sites usually try to make the process easier with mobile apps or browser extensions (for example ShopBack button). At Cheapies we also do comparison between different cashback sites so you can use the one with the best cashback rates. For example at Chemist Warehouse, KiwiWallet is offering 1% cashback whereas ShopRewards is offering 0.7%. ShopBack NZ is not officially launched yet but they are claiming to offer 2.5% cashback from CW — not sure whether it's a promo or just their regular rate.

Anyway, once they launched we'll work out some API integration to retrieve their rates to be displayed on Cheapies. You can then use Cheapies' Chrome/Firefox extension to view & compare the rates when you browse around (which is less intrusive comparing to other official extensions IMHO).

  • Hopefully they can improve their cashback detection then, it's been rather poor.

    • The pessimist in me would say that's intentional.

      • All (ALL) my small purchases go through. I make a 10k purchase and it doesn't get detected. My ticket with Kiwiwallet from >1yr ago is still unresolved. They come back with reasons like - did you allow cookies, did you use a different tab, did you use a coupon code? Trying to get you to say something that will invalidate your cashback.

          KiwiWallet is trash. I've had no problems with CashRewards. Problem is they require you to wait like 90 days or something before you can cash in your cashback, which is rather annoying.

          Every time I've tried KiwiWallet, regardless of my purchase amount, it always fails to detect. I've tested a fresh vanilla browser with no tracking enabled and no uBlock or any other adblocking enabled. Cookies enabled. Nothing. Tried it on my phone, same thing.

  • Thanks for the heads-up @Scotty

    One query: ShopBack NZ appears in the referrals page, but I think it might be referencing the Aussie site as I already had a code in there, and I only just signed up to the NZ site today.

    • Yeah we have to merge ShopBack AU with ShopBack NZ as there are some limitation in how the stores can be set up here. I am not sure whether the referral is ready yet at ShopBack NZ — so might be prudent to wait until official launch.

      • Yeah that also frustrates me with the browser addon how lenovo au etc deals show up for lenovo nz which are not valid in nz.

      • Site seems to be up and running, so is it not official yet?

        Edit: Referral is Get $5 ,Give $5

        For what its worth, I can see a referral link on ShopBack.co.nz right now. It is of the form:

        https://app.shopback.com/{Appears to be eleven random alpha-numerical characters}

        • Can someone please provide the format of the referral link from a desktop? Thanks

          • @moocher: Hi Moocher,

            Can someone please provide the format of the referral link from a desktop? Thanks

            The format above was from my desktop (Win11 - FireFox):

            https://app.shopback.com/{Appears to be eleven random alpha-numerical characters}

            No idea why it starts with 'app'. I have never installed a ShopBack app - neither the NZ nor the Aussie one.

            Thanks,

            Alan.

            • @Alan6984: Thank you Alan, I will set it up as per the format you have provided. Thanks

        • There are now two referral 'products' for Shopback - one for AU and one for NZ. All existing entries are in the AU pool.

          • @moocher: Thanks Moocher - my code was accepted on the referrals page.

            {Fingers crossed}

            :-)

  • There appears to be a few 1 day discounts(end today) like ~10% cashback on lenovo iirc, bet there won't even be any redemptions given no one knew of the launch.

  • Hope they've improved their dodgy practices!

  • What if you have an Aussie Shopback account. Ig you create a new nz one? The Shopback AU pizza cashbacks are crazy

      I created a new one, but then I didn't know you could use the Aussie ShopBack when buying pizza in NZ.

      • You can't. Only a limited number of things work in NZ with an Australian Shopback account. But it would be nice if they have something simialr to the aussie pizza deal for NZ

        • Okay, so I'm not sure what you were asking?

  • What's the strategy for these kinds of programs in terms of setting up your accounts and payment. I know they do this to gather your data so would be interested to know what others do to limit the risk. :)

    I already pay using wise for most online purchases.

      I know they do this to gather your data so would be interested to know what others do to limit the risk. :)

      Use a single-party email address (or at least something with no obvious link to you unlike the fairly pointless 'plus addresses' linked to your real address), a burner phone number, and pay via a card that cannot be re-used without your explicit approval.

      Have a PO Box that stops any link to your home address / employer details (not free in the overall sense, but if you have access to one already, the real (marginal) cost can be zero).

      If you can't be bothered to use a unique email address for every counter-party, use one for a month or a year or whatever period of time works for your level of paranoia, and then change to another one).

      Or, if you are really not wanting to give them data, then don't join in the first place I guess :-)

      • nice! Thanks for the brief guide @Alan6984

          Some self-storage businesses (like Kennards) can take parcel deliveries on your behalf, if you hire one of their units. I get my parcels this way as my house is in an area that's prone to parcel thieves.

            I had no idea about that - thanks for letting us know!
