Changing power companies - bottled LPG

Looking to see if anyone can tell me how this normally works, basically trying to get my folks to change away from Genesis energy to Frank energy as they are offering much cheaper rates. They have bottled LPG + electricity and want to change them both.

Anyone know if they will need new cylinders delivered? (Given Frank is owned by Genesis this might not be the case) If they need new bottles will they get a refund for any gas left in the old cylinders?

Any info appreciated, as someone who only has piped gas I would hate to cost them money by changing companies when they have a full gas cylinder..

With Genesis, power and LPG are separate. So your parents can change over their power for now and keep their current cylinders until they run out, and then order new ones through Frank.

    • They have 2x45kg cylinders, any idea if they could change power companies, and then once one of the cylinders is empty order a cylinder through Frank and then they will have one cylinder from Genesis and one from Frank, and then once the remaning Genesis cylinder is empty only then cancel the Genesis gas account?

      • I'm not too sure about Frank, but some LPG providers only let you buy 2 bottles at a time.

So worst case, they'd use the remaining cyclinder, cancel the Genesis account, and then order two new bottles through Frank.

With Frank your first LPG order needs to be 2x 45KG bottles, then you can order a bottle at a time (or two!) if needed after that. When we switched to Frank we just used up all the gas in our two bottles first then ordered.

agree with the above, when i changed i made sure i had one of the new bottles from the new supplier and one from the old.
had to manually do it, couldn't be faffed trying to get credit sorted.

  • I know with genesis they refund a full cylinder but won't refund partially used cylinders as I'm looking at making a similar move. Good to know I can move my electricity first though and my gas later as I'm at the beginning of a new tank and I didn't really want to loose all that money on a nearly full tank.

  • i am on 9kg lpg bottles for cooking, is there something i can look into to reduce costs?

Your first issue is likely your set up isn't currently legal (and possibly never was), which seems to be the case with most gas hobs that run on 9kg (is it outside?)

But in any case probably not. The gas is slightly cheaper when getting a 45kg bottle, but if you are only using it for a hob the cost to make the piping reach the top of the bottle and hire of them will make the change pretty pointless. Better off to get an induction plate installed.

Check who has the cheapest 9kg fills. Most are $30 now (the $26 fills seem to be gone), but some are far more.

      • It's inside. House is from 2000's

        • Gas fitter cert? Vented cupboard for the bottle?

If no to either I'd be looking to change it (especially if it's the second one!).

Highly doubtful it'd be worth the cost to repipe to outside for a 45kg bottle.

I've got 2 9kgs for water and hob (access issues) and was getting $20 fills from Matagas in CHCH. But Kiwigas and various garages are now the cheapest.

          • @LupinS: No to either. Haven't been checked for the past 20 years

you suggest change gas hob to electric?

How much do you pay for 9kg bottles now? It's like 30+ in akl
