Flybuys Has Announced It's Closing down after Nearly Three Decades

Flybuys members can continue to earn Flybuys until 11:59pm on October 31 and will have until 11:59pm on December 31, 2024 - when the programmed officially closes - to redeem their points.

"We wanted to give our members as much notice as possible, so they have plenty of time to redeem their points, including over the busy Christmas period," Ryley added.

  • Rip. It just saved me $74 on a 50L tank of fuel last night.

Wonder what Kantar survey rewards will change to.

    • Breakdown of where your points came from?

      • +1

Mostly from 2 people doing Kantar surveys. Could've bene more but I've been a bit slack doing the surveys. Then some from Noel Leeming and Z.

It was saved up over 2 months.

I'm wondering if this is why all the latest (well, a year plus) surveys are all very low points, very restricted in who can complete them, and (the reason I won't do them anymore) have massive "pre-survey" sections that have multiple questions only to give you "you're not eligible" after you've answered them all.

  • A shame. Over the last few years I've saved a couple of thousand on petrol.
Actually just about to scan my card now.

And so many Disney+ and NZ Herald discounted subscriptions over the years that I never used but just signed up for the Flybuys

  • Oct? Damn, that means no more New World dollar swap program.

    • +1

it says you can redeem until 31st Dec so hopefully New World will have a New World dollar swap before then.

Would seem to be in NW's interest to do so….

  • I guess like Smith and Caugheys, times are changing and tough and all of this sort of stuff doesnt make sense like they used to, and they either cant adapt or have tried and it still doesnt work.

I suspect Foodstuffs is coming up with something to counter Everyday Rewards - they look pretty wanting compared to that with just Flybuys at New World - which they probably have indicated to Flybuys causing them to pull the pin.

I guess its good news for AirNZ airpoints or everyday rewards as they might pick up some more business.

    • I agree - it seems to me that it was either PNS (and perhaps FourSquare and the other smaller banners) joined FlyBuys, or NW left FlyBuys, and FoodStuffs do their own thing across all their banners.

  • RIP… Their 25 year anniversary point competition was one of the most lucrative cheapie deals.

  • It's 2024, honestly. Idont think many people want to fluff around with rewards stores. Just discount by the cost of the flybuys points upfront and be done with it I guess.

I'm sure most customers would agree with you (since it would be slightly less bother for those that are more price sensitive), but stores want to be able to price-discriminate where at all possible, and having a 'scheme' like FlyBuys / NW ClubCard etc lets them discount to the people that want the discount (enough to be willing to swipe a card at checkout or whatever means they use) and charge more to those that aren't bothered about paying more.

If they discount to everyone they lose margin - commercially not very smart.

      • Oh of course, and there's probably some usefulness from flybuys collecting data across retailers too, but Idk the details at all.

What you've said makes sense. I think the flybuys that I've used has always been the grandparent's. Keems em happy, but my thoughts with it are only ever with the new world discount

R.I.P been using them and BNZ to get points for 22yrs, got a whole bunch of stuff which was great, was eyeing up the PS5, guess I'll have to get it now

Also Website and App is down coz of server overload on people checking their points

Guess I'm switching to Dosh now.

  • Anyone wondering what to spend points on (drop your recommendations below):

These knife sets hands down one of the best redemption's I've made:

305 - Victorinox Swiss Classic Paring Knife 3 Piece Set
730 - Victorinox Classic Tomato & Table Knife 6 Piece Set 11cm (Multi Colour)

  • The Pumped Fuel Discount looks to be the only one that is the best use of the points I reckon

    • If you have a combustion car 😂

  • Damn.
Flybuys from Kantar paid for half the xmas prezzys. Would rack thousands of points over a year.

  • PSA: If you have points expiring soon, might want to check what's on sale atm as they have a decent sale that ends midnight

I had 1600 due to expire in the next month, so the PS5 Disc version I was gonna buy was costing me $225 ontop of my points. On the current sale it cost me $134

    • The ps5 slim version that's currently 5000 points? If i play with the slider and use 1600 points, the cash addition is $530, is that right?

      • Yea, I had 4.3k of points of which 1600 was to expire.
not that the ps5 can be got for 1600 point lol

Just saying there's a sale on that ends tonight for anyone who is in a situation like me needing to use up their points asap

        • Ah, got it. I was wondering how did you get ps5 for $134+1600 points.

I only have 300 points so useless stuffa can be redeemed lol. Event blunt umbrella need to add $80 on top of the points

          • @spam: Yeah this was 4 yrs of saving up haha, sad to see flynbuys go was hoping to get the PS5 Pro from it when it comes out

            • @Huntakillaz: Yeah Pro would be close to a grand, I would think.

I think my best bet is to convert my points into $50 NW dollars. Nothing else stands out

              • @spam: Yeah I'd only be paying $200-300 with my points if it were.

You can save them till December when they most likely have another sale if you have none that expire in the next few months,
Should be able to gain some more points by 31st Oct

              • @spam: Why don't you convert them into fuel discount. Double value of the NW dollars

                • @Superpower21: $110 in petrol.

                • @Superpower21: I've got 300L of sharetank left from when the price was $2.20-ish so probably not going to require fuel for a while

                  • @spam: It would still give you more value to take the free tank now through flybuys. Can get a lot more petrol than groceries at these rates.

After you use it you can go back to the 2.20 per liter sharetank. Eventually the sharetank will end, but you can extend that by a few weeks by taking the free tank now.
