  • For an rtx2050 mobile that does seem to be the lower end of the price spectrum, but anyone looking to play modern games should avoid such a low end and old GPU.

If anyone is looking for a new laptop, I'm sure there's many of us here who can give you a reasonable idea of the laptop/GPU's you should be aiming for if you advise what games you're looking to play. But roughly $900 more will get an rtx3060 mobile which is probably a better entry level these days, but depending on your needs and desired lifespan, that still might be pushing it.

Honestly for indie games, emulators games and bringing a pc around to a friends place to play coop games the 2050 is fine

My $650 1050ti with 4 controllers does well playing co-op (overcooked, ultimate chicken horse etc) at friends places.

But yeah if you're looking to play heavier games then need to be spending around $1500+

      • with fsr or something like it this laptop will do good with newer games

        • There's a few cases where DLSS/FSR decreases performance when used on such low end cards like the 2050 mobile. (it's literally the weakest RTX card)

Good laptop for older games or low demand releases, but not for newer games in terms of the average AA+ or modern style 3d games.
          As a reference TLOU, 1080p, low settings + DLSS = 40fps.
Released in 2023 and not a great port. This is the reality for average scenario for games being released going forward and although there's a small handful of really well optimized games that will hit 60fps @ med-high settings, they're going to be far and few between, so isn't really what should be used as a gauge on how this GPU will perform or people will be disappointed.

          • @chunder: i used it on my desktop pc using ryzen 5 2400g and vega 11 apu and did a decent job

      • Yeah for sure, low end games are fine - also FYI Overcooked 2 came out in 2018 and UCH in 2016 and were low demand even when they released.
That's mostly why I said modern games (referring to higher end AA+ games that people would usually buy a gaming laptop for and suggested anyone unsure should just list the games so someone can confirm if it's capable).

I also have a laptop with a 1050ti mobile which was even lower end for Warzone when it came out in 2020, apart from more indie games, it's not gonna play many games reasonably that's come out since. And the 2050's DLSS features aren't going to help this card much EDIT: looked at some benchmarks and DLSS actually reduces FPS in some games.

        Good reference for performance:
Cyberpunk med settings with DLSS - 46fps
        Warzone2 med settings no DLSS - 50fps
The Last of us low settings @1080p with DLSS quality - 40fps

TLOU is the most modern game there. Although it was a bad port, that's the reality for many games optimization these days, so I'd use that as a gauge for "modern game" performance going forward because worst case scenario is what you should plan for in future when buying such a low end laptop

Will love when NZ actually gets decent laptop deals and not this bullsh

    • To be fair, a 15" Asus tuf rtx4060 is about $2100 at PBTech which isn't really bad considering that's cheaper than what it's selling for on US Amazon and new egg to Americans. I was going to say this price should be the non-sale price for an rtx2050 laptop though, but even an rtx2050 laptop in the US on clearance pricing is about $980nzd so not a massive difference.

Also to anyone looking for a new gaming laptop, the Asus TUF xx60 laptops have been some of the absolute best "cheapest" laptops for a few years now. Pretty much the standard for buying a current and capable gaming laptop.

Honestly Game Pass Ultimate for pc is probably the best way to go for titles that needa dedicated assuming good internet connection.

The streaming isn't perfect but it will work on nearly anything.
