    Exynos again :(

    • +1

The Gap between Exynos & Snapdragon has narrowed a lot. Exynos in the S24 will beat the last generation snapdragon in the S23 for performance (but is notably less efficient).

But yeah, the snapdragon processor is the best, and if you want it, you need to pony up for the S24 Ultra (and put up with the extra weight and pointy corners). I did.

      • It isn't that much less efficient from what I've seen.

        • +1

About 17% less efficient (especially if you turn on 4G/5G).

    • +2

do people really do things with their phones that actually makes exynos vs snapdragon any meaningful?

      • +2

The 1.5fps difference while watching puppies jump through hoops makes all the difference :)

      • That's a great point.

What phone activities make the Snapdragon worthy of pursuit in your eyes @lNomNoml

        • +2

          1) being able to drop lineage OS on it after the support period expires

          • +1

            @Huntakillaz: This.

Many custom ROM devs only support Snapdragon. Plus their performance is usually quite consistent and runs more efficiently without throttling issues.

            • @NovaAlpha: The US and China variants of Galaxy phones normally use Snapdragon, and there's far less custom ROM support than Exynos. The S21 for example only has a custom ROM (Lineage 21) for the Exynos variant, and there's nothing for the Snapdragon variant. This is how it's been on Galaxy phones for years.

              • @kfr23: That's true. I was more referring to the overall landscape of phones on Snapdragon, and the overall ROM support on Snapdragon based phones. Exynos is only used by Samsung AFAIK, whereas Snapdragon and Mediatek are more widely used across various vendors and devices.

                • @NovaAlpha: Ah yes that's true. Technically Tensor (found in newer Google Pixel phones) is based on Exynos, but only Samsung uses the Exynos branded chips in their own devices.

it's just the battery life for me really

        • Which is better?

          • -1

@quote: Battery life is dependent on a lot of things. You could have a Snapdragon chip but with terrible OS & software optimization and it'll drain the battery regardless. Also need to look at other things such as charge rate. If phone A drains 20% faster than phone B, but phone A charges 3 times as fast as phone B, then you'd still be better off with phone A.

            • @NovaAlpha: sounds counterintuitive?

Wouldn't the one that charges more often last for a shorter time due to charge cycles.

Also since getting an M series mac I don't even consider proximity to chargers anymore

              • -1

@Grandma: If phone B takes 3 hours to charge from 0~100 and phone A takes only 1 hour to charge, then it doesn't really matter if phone A drains a little bit faster than phone B. You can always get it up to full charge very quickly. Put it this way, if phone A lasts for 7 hours of screen on time on average and phone B lasts for 8.5 hours, but takes 3x as long to charge, then I'd gladly take phone A. I ain't got the time to wait for a phone to charge, time is valuable to me.

And batteries don't deteriorate that quickly anyway. Most people probably upgrade to a new phone every 2~3 years, by that point the battery is still good.

Anyway, it's not like I have any issues with my devices. I only buy phones around the $700 range at most, but with top tier flagship specs so I'm not losing out on anything. Battery life for me is great on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, idle time is very good at 1% drain every 2.5 days, screen on time a good 24 hours, which is basically a good typical 3 day usage. 100W fast charging gets me up and running in 5~10 minutes.

                • +1

@NovaAlpha: I think 99% of folks just charge when they sleep. Realistically as long as there's a day of battery in there im fine. Heavy battery stuff like gps Ill just plug in the charger in the car

My phone just lives on a wireless charger on my desk so it's usually always got enough in the tank. (also it goes into dnd on that charger which is a blessing and a curse)

You can use your phone while it charges no?

Also there's oodles of iphones on trademe with battery health <80% that are only 2 years old. (probably many android phones too but for apple listings battery health is easy for the seller to find and add)

                  • @Grandma: You can use your phone while it's charging but sometimes you just want to be able to pick it up and use it properly, without having to make sure it stays on the charging pad. It's not an issue with cable.

I think it's fine if you want to charge via wireless overnight while you sleep. But during the day, it's just much more convenient for me personally to charge for 5 mins on cable to 80% and then I don't have to touch it at all for the rest of the day. At the end of the day, charging via cable is still much faster compared to wireless, it's just the way it is. The convenience of wireless charging is there for sure, but it's not mature enough in my opinion.

                  • @Grandma: if you are keeping your device on the charger all the time, then enable battery protection to limit to 85% your battery will last longer when it is getting older. Keeping battery at 100% is not good for lipo batteries.

          • @quote: For this generation, the Snapdragon is better. It is most obvious if you use 4G/5G. Not a big difference if you are on WiFi.

Emulators run better than on Snapdragon

      • I had a note 20 ultra (so a few years ago) that was exynos and it was the heat / battery that was the issue mostly. They released the oneui update that has blur effects and it ran at mid 10fps opening the notification shade .. on a $2300 phone.

That said im running around with a pixel 7 now which has a retooled exynos (or something like that) and it's great.

I dont care at all for the high end of things, just want it to not heat up and have battery all day

  • What do you guys think about nothing phone vs mainline brand?

    • Nothing is good fairly clean of bloat. However software updates don't have a guaranteed or known support timeframe.
Samsung is a consistent experience but they are more heavily loaded with software features (Some quite useful some quite useless)

I bought a Samsung galaxy A04 for $180 including 70 bucks free credit and does everything I need and more

      • Hey thanks, that looks like a good phone, will look into it. need to replace my Galaxy S4 Mini (sigh, no small phones these days).. Cheers.

        • Yep ive noticed they are larger, took awhile to find a case but 123 plus had a decent one branded bueno for 20 bux and now phones have not 1 not 2 but 4 cameras on them for some reason

          • @Vishnu Masala: 1) Main Camera lens
            2) Ultrawide Camera lens
            3) Macro Lens
            4) Depth lens

Because trying to fit motors and such in a small space to move the lenses is very difficult and a drop can break the whole system easy, so using fixed lenses is much easier

        • Yeah, phones are all giant. I ended up with an S23 as it's basically the smallest phone readily available in NZ.

          • @mcaekey: Asus Zenphone is the only one apart from iPhones that come in a smaller form factor.

          • @mcaekey: yep, thats the other one on our list. Well I've got a year or more until I need VOLTE. S4 mini does 4G, but not 4G volte.

      • I'm coming off oneplus nord, so perhaps that one still is better. However wary of the bloatware that can't be uninstalled with samsung

Had the nothing phone 2 from mightyape and it was great. Clean. fast and long lasting battery

  • There's a pretty decent deal on these Jump Starter power banks for $89 with the discount code https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/BAPPWA12000/PowerAll-DELUXE…

    Elsewhere they're $170+. Currently $239 at Mitre 10 https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/powerall-jump-starter-power-b…

    • Can you use it to jumpstart ICE cars with this one?

      • Yes that's what it's designed for. Just check the max amps relative to your vehicle. If you're wanting it for a decent SUV or something bigger than a car you might need one with more amps.

        • ok cool, its just a mazda demio

    • That's pretty good. No reviews so i wonder how long it lasts. These things are now common, when my wife car needed a jump start i asked in cafe for someone to move car to get my car up next to it to jump start and got two offers of battery jump starts from strangers. Much easier than cables.

      • Google Powerall pbjs12000rd for reviews. It seems to be a pretty standard model though the USB cable(s)/attachments can differ from pictures I've seen. The one from PB Tech included a single USB A plug to USB C, Apple Lightning and Micro USB.

  • This is back in stock for $10 more
