We're over here now, don't forget the visa (and allow an appropriate timeframe for it to process) and also factor in about 2 - 3 hours of queueing at SGN to get out of the airport.

Highly recommend the Grab app for transport and food delivery, you can sign up before leaving. They have heaps of deals for food places and also offer 12 months of 'Grab Unlimited' in Vietnam for free, which gives a stack of food discounts and 20% off rides.

Sim cards are cheap, easy as to get from the official stores, street sides, or the airport. I used an esim for the night we got here and then purchased a local one the next day, about $10 for the sim and a daily 6GB on 4G.

Wise card has been good to carry, we withdrew the free limit of cash and just mix and match where we use that and the card, but most places accept the card without issue.

  • Hey beatthatflight thanks for post! How do you go about searching for cheap prices for certain dates like the dates you have in this post? When I check the low fare calender on your website it only comes up with magnifying glass logo meaning you have to check manually for every date? Am I missing something? Like say I want to check for cheapest flight around mid-November to mid-January return, how do I efficiently go about looking for the cheapest price?

    • Million dollar question :/ The problem with that calendar is that it's a cached value. And prices fluctuate so much, that I have to choose how long to cache a search there, otherwise I show a value and people click it and it's suddenly higher, and then they get upset.

https://www.beatthatflight.com.au/index.php/flexisearch/ is the best 'intermediate' step I could make, to help you find a cheaper holiday.

There's no real way to be super efficient about it, unfortunately. Flexi search is about the best I can do without a ton of servers and cash, which I don't have :P Even kayak and sky scanner allow flexisearch +/- 1-3 days, because the number of combinations they have to process increases exponentially with each step of flexibility added into the search :/

I do recommend though trying one way searches to find the cheapest departure date, as you can do that quite easily, and then the same coming back. That'll give you a sense of the best dates - maybe a Thursday is really cheap, or weirdly the second Friday of November is a public holiday in Christchurch except when that day is the 10th, for example. Then you can do a return search using those results to see how it works out. Sometimes two one ways can even be cheaper!

The lists I have in this post are a brute force manually searching. As such I can't possibly search every date. I can, however, build a python script to do the grunt work for me, but it can take hours (sometimes days, depending on the number of routes on sale, eg the current Virgin Australia sale). I'm working on ways to make that faster, but yeah, sorry ,best I can do :/
