NZ vs AU tech Tax

Having moved from Sydney I thought the AU tech tax (compared to the US) was bad but wow this takes the cake.

Samsung 55" The Frame QLED 4K Smart TV [2024]

https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/products/samsung-55-the-frame-qled-…
$2798 (on special, $500 off!)

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-55-the-frame-qled…
$1395 ("red hot deal")

Yes 5% extra sales tax, and approx 10% hit from exchange rate … and the remaining 85%?

Sigh, I will get over it I guess

It is not greed its volume.
Australia has far bigger population and more aggressive buying power.

CGA is a factor but mostly the cost to get goods into the country.

  • +1

    Small market higher costs.

CGA also adds to cost (although Australia has their own version, usa doesn't).

Another example is the Logitech G PRO Racing Wheel. 1,499.95 AUD vs 2,299.95 NZD.
I really hope that some stores (and brands) are going to go bankrupt or at least close their NZ shops.

The more shops that go out of business, the less competition, and the higher prices will go.

Of course, the right thing for you to do is to setup your own shop and sell at substantially lower prices (because clearly that would be an option), grab significant market share (due to your prices being so much lower than anyone else), and force the others to drop their prices to compete with you. Do let us know once you get setup.

  • For that price you can get an OLED….

I hope you bought your whiteware appliances over as they are twice the price here.

  • Why would you move?

    • Lifestyle. In Nelson, mountaining biking, outdoors, kids love it.

Yes bought over OLED TV. Looking at frame to actually use to display photos and occasional tv in family room.

LG OLED's are about 50% more there, so not so bad

Welcome to Nelson. It's a great place to be.

  • Retailers certainly dont have that kind of difference as margin (it's higher than it gets made out ot be on TVs / AV but it's not that high).

I guess CGA + Shipping + The MUCH lower volume + Obviously GST etc all contribute.

That being said, pricespy puts it at $1998 or so as all time low back in april. I have zero idea if it's samsung or the retailer controlling that. I wonder if australian retailers have the volume to sustain that kind of volume pricing adjustment (if that's what it is) and we just don't come close.

Love the frames. Used to really enjoy setting them up for people. Slightly tricky to install with the split bracket if the studs aren't quite where you need them to be

I used to have a business that sold TVs - I can confirm that, unless something has drastically changed in the last ten years or so since I sold that business, there is next to no margin in them.

We gave up marketing to individuals (they generally expect too much service / have too little knowledge of their own, and want to pay too little), and only aimed at bulk buyers (hotels, motels etc - often a different model of TV than retail though), as it could make more sense to supply, say, thirty of the same panel at once, but even then it wasn't a great business line. For those customers, there was also more chance of additional sales afterwards supplying replacement remotes, cables etc - most (not all!) retail customers don't lose / damage their remotes, and certainly not their cables, which I can only imagine a certain type of person must steal from hotel / motel rooms!

    • Australian CGA is as good if not better than NZ in my opinion. Sounds like pricing to what the market will bear, and given the comments I would also guess the "importer" setting the price which is also a challenge in AU for other types of low volume items.

Thanks for the tip re pricespy if that was the 2024 matt version prob a good price for NZ

TV's have been falling in price in AU for a year or two now, maybe it will catchup here :)

Mountain bikes are the same price though or even cheaper in NZ, maybe it's the volume :D

      Cheers all

      • I don't know how much this contributes, but when I worked for a retailer, the rep would tell us that they've added additional margin to clear tvs.

Whether that gets swept up by the retailer was on them, but it happened and I'd imagine LG's margin on something like a 65 C4 to be in the $1k-$2k territory, predicated entirely on the price changes over the year that they have.

I was just looking at some smart locks, same lock - $198AUD on Bunnings Australia site, $339NZD in New Zealand. And close to 100% price increase in NZ for some appliances.
