200

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so here.

Are you the Special Someone our animals have been waiting for? From 6-21 July, we are waiving adoption fees for long-stay residents for the right home. Look for the ‘Special Love Needed’ tag on our adoption profiles, check you can provide what they need to flourish & apply online. Our usual adoption criteria and processes apply.

A good comment on a previous post:

Can I suggest that if anyone is interested in adopting, pay the full fee.It only partially covers the cost of desexing, microchipping and vaccination that Spca and all good rescues will do. It will help them save more animals and how can you put a price on that?

  • I tried to adopt a dog from SPCA the other week. They never returned my emails or my calls (just goes to voicemail). Tried a few times already, even sent them a message on Facebook. In the end, I just bought one off Trademe.

did you apply online? everything is done online now.
you find the dog you want, then click apply, they will get back to you within 24hrs, when i got my cat, i did it while in the cattery, once completed, i told them. they fast tracked it.
with dogs, animal control or spca volunteer have to do a property inspection. so it can take a while

      • I applied online, waited over a week and no news. Then I emailed them and called them and got nothing. The doggy I wanted was at the Whangarei branch and it's not exactly close to central Auckland. I originally planned on driving up there and staying the night and pick up the puppy, but only on the condition that they get back to me and confirmed that I'll be able to take him, which they never did.

The didtance you were from the rescue is probably the reason, as advised above checks and interviews need to be done for dog adoptions for welfare reasons.
You cant adopt a dog you have never met from spca.

It's not possible just just pick one up. Again it's the big difference between adopting and buying.

They definitely should have got back to you to say it wasnt viable. Or if the dog had alot of interest, they may have had to short list the applications
And may have not been able to send out rejection emails. Again definitely not great but plausable.

Might depend on your local. I inquired about a cat on Friday (created an account and applied online), got an email saying that he’s found a home already and if there were others I was interested in on Sunday, replied yes on Sunday, now about to get a call this afternoon.

Adoptions are just one of the many things SPCA do.

I suspect the reason they havent got back to you is because they are massively under the pump.
Given it's mostly voluntary i'd be inclined to give them a break.

Best sending a follow up message? A week or two is not a long time to wait when you are looking to add a new family member to your home.

Would personally never consider trade me, private listings to "buy" a cat or dog. Massively uregulated and in alot of cases just people looking to make a quick buck.

Well, I tried, but they didn't get back to me and it has been about 3 or 4 weeks now, so I ended up buying on Trademe. It also depends on what breed of dog you want. If you want a Shiba Inu for example, it's impossible to find that for adoption. At the end of the day, you still want to find a dog for you, one that you like. And there are certain dog breeds that I just dislike and would absolutely avoid, such as Rottweilers. In that case, I would much prefer to buy from Trademe.

I also don't see what the problem is buying on Trademe, even if it's unregulated. As long as the breeder is good and the breed of dog you're getting doesn't have a lot of known health issues, then you should be pretty safe? I remember many years ago, NZ pet stores used to sell pets and I think the store was called Jensens or something (this was prior to Animates being established in NZ). I got my Sydney Silky puppy back then for $1500 and he died at the age of 16. And I've seen Sydney Silkies on Trademe for around the same price these days, so I think the price is fair. If you were to buy a Shiba Inu however, that would be $5000 and that's expensive for sure.

Sorry but this is bull. I work (volunteer) in rescue, the reason most rescues including SPCA are under huge strain with long term fosters is because the cost of living.

Most rescues care deeply for the pets under their care and big part of fostering is socialisation and rehabilitation.

Just adopted a cat and just got the fee waived because they’re honouring it from the 1st of July. May vary from centre to centre.
