Best Way to Get Started with Golf Clubs ~ $500

I've recently played my first couple of golf games, sharing a friends clubs. I enjoyed it and am pretty sure I'll continue casually for some time, so I think it's a good idea to get a basic set of clubs to stop being a scab.

My form is terrible and I'm legitimately two games in, so I'm thinking a second hand set that isn't terrible should do for now and I can upgrade pieces over time as my budget is limited. However I'm totally ignorant of what to look for, and a lot of second hand brands in my price range don't seem to be well known. I'm also unsure if I could just get away with a reduced set of clubs for now, considering I don't feel a lot of difference between the irons at this point.

So at $500 or below, what's the best way to start building my set of clubs while being able to play a full game with my own set?

just keep an eye on trademe and marketplace. If you don't mind looking for a few weeks, you can get a passable set for under $200, when you get better and want to upgrade they're pretty easy to sell on for a profit.

If you want to be very stingy, keep on eye on local op shops, can often get an antique but useable set for under $50. When you're ready to move up it's easy too double the cost on trademe.

Look at review sites' recommendations for best beginner's driver, best beginner's irons etc… from 7-10 years ago, then look for those second hand. Something like "Best beginner's driver 2015" will give you something that will be in your price range now and will serve you really well. The difficult part about doing it this way is that you have to wait for those clubs to come up for sale, and the used club market in NZ is tiny.

You can definitely start with fewer clubs since you will likely only use five or six of them to start out, but you're more likely to get good value if you buy a set.

I think the most important thing to remember (because we're on Cheapies) is not to get caught up thinking that new clubs are going to fix your game. There were guys playing 100 years ago with wooden clubs that would destroy you today no matter what you were playing with. Practise, repetition, and coaching (if you can justify the cost) are what will improve your game.

I haven't played for many years now, but my general thinking on selection of clubs would be something like:

A single driver (Don't worry TOO much about the number, but perhaps ideally, No 3)

Irons: Three, Five, Seven or Eight, Wedge, Putter

As a beginner, you'll likely hit a three iron much the same way as a one or a five, a seven or eight the same as a six or a nine.

Personally, I wouldn't even worry too much if they are mis-matched - as others have said, you can replace them if you keep playing.

You'll want a bag, and depending on your strength / fitness, a trolley. Or stick to nine holes :-)

In my case, I needed a fair few spare balls too :-(

An umbrella would be good for this time of year, if only to stop your bag filling with rain!

All of the above from an op shop or TM, and if you are careful, likely for very little.

      • and different sizes for too tall or short

I never shared clubs so all mins were the right length for me, but if you are, then you are probably correct.

  • Fantastic advice lads, I'll take the recommendation and put in the work myself to figure out the brands, but if any of you happen to know of common brands that would fit this mold please let me know. My attempts at looking on FB/TM so far I'm always pretty unsure on the brands and a lot don't seem to show on google.

It doesn't matter what you get. Once you get bitten by the golf bug it will be a never ending process of upgrading your clubs in the hopes of bringing your score down. Enjoyable hobby but easy to sink some money into. Rockbottomgolf.com used to be my go to when I was splurging on a club but I think the exchange rate was better back then.
