LED Downlights - suggestions

Hi all,

Looking at putting in a bunch of LED downlights and looking for recommendations/feedback.

I've previously used the Bunnings Deta ones, and they were Ok, but found them to flicker quite a lot.

I was looking at the Philips "Premium" ones: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/philips-9w-1000lm-120mm-cct-led-p…
and I am sure they've recently put up the price, atleast with powerpass, I think $30 per light is a bit much.
Requirements are dimmable, ideally 1000 lumens or thereabouts, size of cutout doesn't really matter.

Also been looking at a couple of options for some RGB ones for kids rooms, and from what I can see looking online it seems that Hue is really the only brand that seems to last and is most reliable when it comes to home automation but at $100 per light I'll pass on that, is there any other options people here have used and and can recommend?

Hi can strongly recomend the downlight from Switch lighting , they are made in Nelson. These one have a CRI of 90 and this is really good for an LED . https://switch-lighting.co.nz/product/sled415f-fixed-110o-o1… .
The phillips have a CRI of 80 , and have a rated lifetime of 30,000hrs vs 60,000hrs for the switch lighting ones. I went with the 315 and they have a lumen output of 800lumens of quality light. The 415 is just over 1000lumen in the same range.

    • For colored ones i have used xiaomi lamps screw types one (E27). Connection as been quite reliable and better then the TP link lanps i have tried. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/BULMIX24994/Xiaomi-Mi-Home-…

Where did you get yours from? It seems the 315 is about $30 and the 415 around $40

      • Got my sparky to instal them. I requested these ones and they are readily available at the wholesaler. They also have a IC-F and IC-4 rating, meaning they can have insulation right agaisnt them and also be covered depending on the wattage.

  • I don't know alot but just had electrician around because my led down light was flickering. He replaced it with a
    Apollo3130mmLEDDownlight11WIC-FIP65 1000lm

I've just put this in to google to buy my own and replace the rest myself.

    Hopefully this helps.

    • is there an LED driver involved in the ceiling space or do you just replace the bulb?

    • Unless I am missing something, those lights are around the $60 mark?

  • It was the whole light. Driver? Is that the box he plugged it into?
He charged me $69 to and that absurd

By the sounds of it you probably know this but I've tried multiple Tuya compatible Smart RGBW downlights from various AliExpress vendors and have been disappointed in them all.

Even on 100% the 15w models which are supposedly 800 lumens (or something around that) are duller than a 40w incandescent bulb. I originally had 2 * 10w in a room, upgraded to 4 * 15w and still it's not as bright as the original 2 * LED downlights which were rated 8w.

Add to that out of perhaps 20 Tuya Smart Downlights purchased in 2 years, 6 have failed totally. They're not reliable nor good VFM, even at $10 each.

    • Yeah I've heard of similar stories, hence leaning towards the Philips as I've got some Philips outdoor floodlights and indoor battens which are probably 5 years old now and have had no issues.
