Looking for Tablet Recommendation

Hi everyone, my partner is looking for a best budget tablet for regular use, for under $500
She needs it for browsing, MS Excel/Word, movies/music, setting up schedules,
edit video for IG story/reel, generally having a larger screen than her phone.
Additionally, will use it for a 6-year-old, for some screen time and learning/drawing apps.

Currently looking at this M11 4G $382 @Amazon,
according to Camel3 it's $327 just a few days ago.
Please feel free to suggest any other models/brands that might suit the budget & needs.

Might be useful going through a few Tablet posts on OzBargain and reading the comments

  • I've been very disappointed with the performance of the Lenovo tablets I've owned and tried out. I think you'd be much happier spending a bit more for a new 9th-gen iPad, which is what I ended up doing. (This is a kind of a bummer for me because I'm an Android guy.)

    • Which ones do you own and what are the issues with them specifically? I've got a Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad and it's pretty awesome. I just use it to watch Netflix and do basic things on it and the performance has never been an issue. Also have a Teclast T40 Plus (or Pro?) and also a MiPad 6 and I honestly don't see too much of a performance difference between them. I use the tablets just for light browsing and media consumption.

      • Hi mate do you have a reliable source to buy a Lenovo Xiaoxin pad? Cheers

        • AliExpress/TaoBao (the Xiaomi Pad 6/6S/6 Max/6S Pro are good shouts too)

          • @spren: Have a look at TaoBao; it seems like the ones posted by Clear on Ozbargain from Aliexpress are the cheapest. Xiaomi Pad prices seem to start from $600 onwards.

        • I got it from Taobao and it wasn't even the cheapest. I paid like around $380 and that was quite a long while ago. Now it's more like $350 or cheaper I believe.

      • Owned the M8, tried the M9. Really sluggish for pretty much everything, it felt like they didn't care about bottlenecking when they picked the components.

        • Well there's the problem. You picked a tablet with a meh CPU. It's not really a problem with Lenovo, there are meh models across all brands. You need to pick the right device with the right specs.

For me, I have a bunch of devices from all sorts of brands. Just do your research and pick the right one and you'll be fine.

          • @NovaAlpha: I think we can agree that the Lenovo brand is no guarantee of quality, and that someone looking at a Lenovo tablet should be cautious.

            • @Slogan: Nope, I disagree. I would have never picked the M8 or M9 because of the specs. You picked a tablet with a crappy CPU, it's as simple as that. Other brands that also use the same CPU would also have poor performance.

I have a Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad 12.7 and it is great. Also own a Xiaomi Mipad 6 and a Teclast T40 Plus. I buy things after researching the specs, regardless of the brand.

            • @Slogan: Have to agree with novaalpha on this one. Lenovo's quality is generally not bad, but across the board if you pick up a cheap tablet with a poor CPU and not enough ram performance just isn't pleasant. I have the same with the Samsung A8 where it's fine for watching video which was my driver for getting one, but browsing and anything else you can feel it's sluggish and the components are struggling to keep up.

It's the same in most phones, tablets and even laptops. Most big manufacturers have generally decent manufacturing and parts that are good enough, but chuck a celeron in with 4gb of ram and it'll perform like junk compared to the same parts with an i5 &16gb of ram.

The difference seems to be that phone and tablet manufacturers seem happy to sign you in to a 2 year renewal and drop updates and support whereas laptops tend to last double that and windows updates continue to come through regardless of what laptop you purchased.

For the OPs usage of minor video editing and productivity skimping on an M series isn't what I'd suggest as things like word and excel in that will become frustrating if it lacks performance.

              • @Everettpsycho: There's no disagreement really, we've just had different experiences. OP's looking at the budget end of the market and some Lenovo tablets are more budget than others.

I use Linux and can say I am Linux fanboy if that is a thing , android is Linux underneath, but that said I also use macbook and iPad Air m1, imo , m1 air iPad with a Logitech folio case is just amazing i got it for my then 6 year old son who is now 8 years old . I got it with my .ac.nz email id via apple education . Got logitech case from Amazon Australia. Using it over 2 years my son does khan academy, Duolingo some video editing simply piano and many other things .
The use and the feel and the smoothness of iPad for simple tasks like typing integrated tablet stand etc is great, plus iPad has resell value

  • Honestly I'd suggest spending a little more. I have a Samsung A8 and it's ok for very basic video watching but even browsing it struggles. If you can up the budget if imagine a s8 fe or basic iPad would be a significant improvement over the A series.

If you want to teach a 6 year old drawing check for stylus compatibility as not all tablets have the digitiser to use an active stylus. The S8 fe comes with the S pen in the box. Sure a capacitive Stylus will work on all tablets but it's not pleasant drawing with one.

    • SoC on the newer gen Samsung A9/A9+ are significantly better that the A8s.

      • I agree get an A9+ When it comes up on special
