New Bed Recommendations

We desperately need a new bed and are looking at a Super king or California king. We aren’t keen on a memory foam bed and would like to support a NZ owned company who sells NZ made beds.
We really liked the Plush Sleepyhead Sanctuary range but even on a big special it’s still $7,000+ which seems like a lot to spend on a bed.
We don’t really want to compromise too much on quality but does $7000 for a bed seem normal?
Does anyone have any recommendations? If not a specific bed then where is the best place to buy a bed from? Located in Wellington

I would recommend heading down to Thorndon Quay - there are 7 bed shops in close proximity to one another. I did a loop of all stores and eventually settled on a mattress and base from the New Zealand Bed Company Thorndon. It was a floor model on clearance so I got it for a very good price (you might have some luck finding a clearance special too). In my opinion they offered the best value for money - plus the mattresses are NZ made.

I've found Wellington beds really good too. So made locally. And able to offer big discounts as well when on sale, though most bed shops seem to do that.

Keen to support the local manufacturer but not so much the retailer mark up which I expect is huge.

Half joking, but maybe worth a crack, go knock on the door. They’re made in Otahuhu - 41-71 Great South Road, Ōtāhuhu, Auckland 1062.

“ The Comfort Group is a fourth generation family owned & run business that began life in the 1930s with Sidney Turner making mattresses out of an Auckland shed. Its evolved in to Australasia’s largest bedding and foam manufacturer, producing famous brands and world-class products across seven manufacturing facilities in both Australia and New Zealand.

The Comfort Group has grown and developed an extensive stable of brands that both Aussies and Kiwis have come to love and trust, such as Sleepyhead, SleepMaker, Dunlop Foams, Beautyrest, Serta, Dunlopillo, Design Mobel and Wonderest as well as Sleepyhead Flooring.“

Recommend this range of mattresses from Sleepy head - managed to get it down to $2500, which I thought was reasonable albeit I purchased a queen.

    • That is a great deal, did you call or walk in to get that deal?

      • Walk in and a bit of bartering but wasnt hard.

The owner dropped it down to $3500 straight away, then to $3000 then to $2500 delivered with a free mattress protector.

        • Super comfortable by the way, comfier than any 5 star hotels I've stayed at. But definitely recommend going to a bed store and lying on them for 10 mins each or something before you buy.

          • @Lieutenantdave: thanks mate. I will go and try it out Presume select 7 Cushion Medium plush level on firmness which is ideal

        • which store was this and how long ago? I would love to get such a great bargain. We tried the swisstech and it was amazing but the best they would do for us was 50% off which still made the super king over $4K before the delivery and mattress protector.

          • @SachaR: It was in the New Lynn store in Auckland. Probably under 2 years ago. Mine was a queen btw. So super king for 4k kinda seems alrightish i guess?

I've just got a Ecosa mattress recently and we are loving it. I know there is another similar company which is NZ based but can't remember the name now, 100 days free trial, less than $1600 for a Super King mattress (we already have a bed base).

    • Dude doesn’t want foam mattresses.

      • Emma is good too but OP doesn't want foam

  • Ordered oslo SK bed from oakfirniture. Can't comment on it yet bc it hasn't arrived yet.

When it arrives the provisional plan is to buy a pure latex mattress and topper from peace Lily nz online.

I’m not able to message you on here it seems (may be to do with your settings?) what fitness is the mattress? Firm/medium or soft?
And how much are you wanting for it?
Is it listed anywhere for sale eg trade me?
If I’m not interested maybe someone else on here will be so the above details would be helpful.

      • Hi it’s a medium fitness of the mattress and I’m looking around $1800 to sell it. Unfortunately I haven’t posted anywhere yet because been busy moving but if you want I can send you some photos if you happy to have a look I can send you my cousin number and i can arrange your timing with him.

  • Bought this storage bed base from tsb living
    https://www.tsbliving.co.nz/products/t-bass-storage-bed-fram…
Its brilliant if you want more storage. And bought the mattress from parallel imports. Highly reccomend both

    • Use code: TSBSC12 to take another 12% off the retail price at TSB Living

    • I think they don't have super king. Atleast search didn't give me.

    • Mattress from which store? Thanks

  • Has anyone bought one from here. What are they like?

    https://www.facebook.com/luxuryorthopedicbeds

    • I’m thinking of stopping in here on our way up north to try them out. They sound almost too good to be true. They seem very popular from all their online reviews but I don’t know anyone personally that has one.

      • Read my comment

    • Avoid like the plague. Me and my partner had car keys in hand ready to head to their warehouse to check them out when I thought I should have a look at some of their negative reviews.
Long story short, if anything happens to your bed your are f**ked. The owner has a lawyer friend that will hit you with cease and desist letters etc.
Note that most positive reviews are placed with a few weeks of getting the mattress.

      • Oh wow! Thank you for the advice, looks like we dodged a bullet. Seems like the safe option is to go with a bed from sleepyhead or big save ect

      • I noticed some of the reviews were for ones sold ages ago on FB anyway , no recent ones that I could compare to. Most likely marketing hype

    • I clicked on this link now i cant block their advertisements lol.

  • Big save is another option i needed a plush which they sell.
