Vinyl/LP - Best (Biggest Collections+ Good Price) Online Store in NZ

Just recently got myself into vinyl/Lp collecting (new or pre-loved in superb condition). Where do you go usually to find something to buy? I'm on north island, and willing to travel, but may be easier if the store has online presence and can deliver.

Hi, I have a collection of over 800 records after I went crazy during COVID lockdowns
In Melbourne, Australia. Most of them are still in storage and I need to relocate them to NZ as I’ve moved back here but they weigh 400kg total.

Anyways back in NZ I’ve been finding Real Groovy amazing for the genres I’m in to and found several presses I’ve been after for a while. Their online site is decent and fast shipping to me in the South Island - https://realgroovy.co.nz. Also checkout if there is a local record store in your town or nearby and make friends with the owner/staff. Sometimes they can order you in certain products etc.

I also highly recommend the app/site/platform Discogs for tracking your collection and wantlist. It gives an estimated value for your collection based on their sales data (they also have a marketplace).

    Cheers!
    Enjoy collecting vinyl/wax

Discogs for tracking your collection and wantlist

Good info thanks. Is there any website that tracks limited edition vinyl, or even individually numbered releases? I am keen on collecting good valuable LE shits.

Discogs is probably your best bet for this, most released music globally is indexed on there, and it gets really granular with all the different releases. To give you a brief rundown:

You start off on the artist page, where you get a full list of releases. On the left of the page you can filter by types of releases, from Albums to DJ mixes, so it's not all cluttered together.

From there you can select an album overview page which shows the 'broadstrokes' release information.

On the right of this you have the 'Shop now' button, allowing you to browse every single available copy that is listed for sale on Discogs.

On the bottom of the album page you have the version breakdown, showing that this album has 24 different released variants over its lifetime thus far. Selecting the first limited edition box set takes you to the individual pressing/release page, which in turn narrows down the marketplace to only those specific versions of the albums available for sale.

On each corresponding album page you can also log your own collection to keep track, or if you don't own it but want to keep an eye out, you can put it in your wishlist.
There's also comment sections on each page, so people can update/discuss the releases, and comment on the quality of pressings etc.

Unfortunately, living in NZ we don't have a very broad selection of limited edition vinyl within our borders. Some artists release their limited albums to record stores, but you can imagine how many there are in the world. If a release is limited to 200 copies, there's easily more than 200 stores vying for those, and however many people per store that might want that popular release.

Your best bet is honestly going straight to the source for your new purchases - a lot of artists of the non-super-popular variety sell them on their own stores or Bandcamp these days, but this does mean you have to be on top of your timing so you don't miss out.

The biggest killer across both of these options is shipping. Don't expect change from $100 for your average European/US limited release.

Welcome to the crippling addiction hobby!

Vinyl Countdown is great. Good website, good prices and they ship really quickly. The records always come in protective sleeves too which is a nice touch.

    • Thanks - will check them out this weekend
