FYI none of the New Worlds in Auckland carry the Auntie Dai stuff in this deal, but the pork buns are $7.50 in PaknSave.

Just putting it out there that Buldak is now selling dumplings, and you can find them in some Asian stores.

  • I bought this deal last time it was at woolworths and these dumpligs are actually not that good, I wonder if im doing something wrong but they taste and feel like recicled paper glued together.

    • Yeah, they're not the greatest, but they're a decent deal. You get 24 of them, so I guess that's why people like them. The other brands are quite expensive, providing only 10 or so for the same price. To boost the flavour, try adding some sesame oil and maybe dip them in chicken chili oil if you're into that. It really kicks up the taste! Also, I honestly think pan-frying them after steaming is the way to go.

      • I been steaming them yeah but not great really. I love these same dumplings from the night markets tho.

      • We are Chinese and my wife doesn't like these dumplings at all. It doesn't really matter how you cook it. No good is no good.

But I always buy them without noticing her first when it's on a deal like this. lol. As my wfie does most of the cooking, so it will stay in freezer for a pretty long time. I think it tastes ok. I mean I like them, but I won't be able to eat it every day. Not like the ones that we make ourselves, if we have that time we would like to have it very often. I used to have dumplings every morning when I was at my hometown.

For other people around me, like my kids, they think it's good as well. My kiwi friends think it's good. My Chinese friends, hmm.. most of them don't even buy them.

If my wife ever wants to have some good dumplings, she mostly will have to make by herself. Or be given by some friends, which will be very rare. We tried many different dumpling places/brands in Auckland. None of the ones we have tried that she will think it's good. The problem is to make dumplings taste good requires time, effort and talent. Like the skin, it's easy to make it taste like paper, like my skillset pretty much at this level. But it's really hard to make it taste like skin.

Unfortunately, It's just basically a fact that, at least for chinese food, it's just not easy to find a very good one out of its original place.

    • Interesting - might depend on how you cook them? I steam them, personally, them add soy sauce and a sweet chilli dressing.

      • goma/ sesame sauce. or chili crisp oil (lao gan ma or other brands)

      • I been doing exactly that but maybe just not up my alley. I love these same dumplings from the night markets tho.
