eSim's for Japan

Any recommendations heard some bad stuff about basically all of them but would be interested to know what peoples experiences were like between roaming providers like Airalo vs Mobal (Local option)

Got a short layover in Fiji (Yes using the Fiji Airways deal) so ill just use the $8 roaming with 2D but makes no financial sense for a full 14days.

We just used Airalo last year. No issues

  • Used nomad for my last two trips there, never had any issues. Look out for coupon codes

I use this website to compare esim plan : https://esimdb.com/japan

    • Just wished it had two things the connectivity type 4G or 5G and if its a local or routed ip

Honestly the bad reviews are usually people that dont understand how to roam

Would 3gb be enough for your 14 days?

    • We went with 20GB (each) for 21 days but should've gone with 10GB. No movie watching on it but plenty of everyday use.

    • Data usage goes up when I'm away.
20gig realistically is what I'm looking for but so many horror stories on reddit etc about connection issues figured I'll probe the audience for feedback

Mobal looks good but many people say good and bad it's hard to tell…

  • Used Airalo eSims when we did 21 days in Japan. Went from Sapporo to Kagoshima and various places in between without any issues.

  • Used Ubigi, had no problems or difficulties.

  • Just got back from Japan

If you buy tour or attraction tickets from Klook they give you free 3gb Esim vouchers in Japan. Not sure if its every purchase, but its a lot of them. Klook prices are pretty good, never more and sometimes less than from the provider - way easier to navigate than some of the JP sites as well.

Klook say they are worth 1200 yen - so that would make each one worth like $13 - so hardly a big cost even if your buying them

I have at least one left I never used, 3gb valid for 15 days. DM me your email and Ill send you the voucher if you want it .

    • Sent you a message! That’s interesting, I’ve never seen that before with Klook anywhere else - was it listed when you bought the Klook deal? That’s really helpful as a freebie!

  • Going on the 17th, does any one have any suggestion for a call and data based eSim? Everything I see is data only.

Japan is extremely difficult to get a number just use VOIP services
Mobal offers them but they are VERY expensive for what you get.

      • Thanks, thats clear enough. I will just go with an eSim in this case.

Was in Fiji yesterday, chose a ~16 hr layover (during the day), so we could spend the day at a beach resort.

No need to spend money on roaming. If you are staying in the airport, there is free wifi. If you are clearing into Fiji, there is a telco offering a sim card with 2gb / 48hr data for completely free in the arrivals hall. No queue when I arrived, and they even fitted the sim into my phone for me…

For reference we paid for a day trip Hilton Resort in Denearu. Was an amazing day. Vast majority of the day trip fee is a credit that can be spent on food / drinks onsite.

~ 25 - 30min taxi ride. Cash only which is a bit of a pain for such a short visit (especially given the airport ATM i used had a $15 Fijian fee for a withdrawal). Cost FJD 45 each way (three people and a massive amount of luggage in a van), but this was by calling the same taxi driver to take us back to the airport. Apparently if you use a taxi arranged by the resort for the return trip it is much more expensive (FJD100+ for a van).

I screwed up and only got FJD 80 out of the atm, but still had some USD in my wallet, and the driver was happy to take some.
