They might have an awful lot of these to clear after they were caught adding extra scooters, than licensed for, and have been kicked out of Wellington & Auckland https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350415419/wellington-joins-a….

    is this foldable?

    • +1

      No, specs have non-foldable stem

      • thanks. was confused as it says the retail equivalent is Segway Ninebot G30 which seems to have foldable stem.

        • Yeah I noticed that too, equivalent but not the same. Beam are big enough that they'd have custom tweaks for their requirements and app, direct from Segway Ninebot. Foldability probably makes them easier to steal.

  • Can you carry this on bus. Train as they are not foldable?

    • Foldable makes scooters FAR easier to move around and put away and the stem works as a handle. The G30 is good model. I wonder if you can drill contmnect to these Beam modified ones with the apps and have tracking enabled etc

    • Train, yes, bus, officially no, but some drivers let you

  • Since you cant fold them. Can you fit them in a car?.

    • +3

If your car's big enough, you can fit anything in it.

      • +3

        I dont have a Canyonero

    • I used to put unfolded scooter behind front seats in car in an upright position. No problem. Preferred that to folding repeatedly.

      • If they have the measurements i would bother but it seems to inconvenient to use with public transport too.

Price seems high for equipment that has been utterly thrashed

    • +1

This. I would’ve expected this trash to be sold for sub-$100 let’s be honest.

      • Especially where not retro fitted with a brand new battery.

      • +1

$120 at most. $300 is a level where you'd expect longevity

        • I got a Segway d18 for $300 from Aldi in Aus. could barely climb a slight incline in a flat city so Id assume the power would need to be far higher in NZ.

edit: also solid tyres in rain is sketch as

          • @abuch47: further clarification: this has 350W which id say is the minimum you'd want for any hills. dual braking is going to be ok but id still be careful on wet or slippery surfaces like paths. Also at 19kg would be annoying, a 14kg foldable was awkward enough for a strong 6 footer and awkward for public transit.

Assuming they've done reasonable testing and refurbishment, around -$1200 off a similar model does seem that bad, plus theres a 4 month warranty and if you're using it frequently enough you'll find the issues.

I would at least be sceptical, especially given their reported disdain for doing what they said they would do in terms of their contracts, but I could be wrong.

Might be easier for them to sell them with a four month warranty, and just swap the ones that people test for them (for free) and find are a problem, than incurring the costs of testing all of them?

  • Beam's reputation in NZ is tarnished.
I won't be surprised if they drop the prices more heavily than this just to break-even, so IMO no point to buy now if you are interested.

Make sure you double check on pickup which model you’re getting. In Auckland they had two different models on the street from memory, so assume they’re offloading both. Terms make it sound like it could be both models too

    • Retail equivalent is a Ninebot G30
    • Exact model may differ from photographs

Would also be wary of battery life with these

    • +4

What was the difference between the 2 models?

      • Yeah kinda missing some key why and what to look for info here…

      • Sorry - not sure of the model numbers

visually, newer version had an inbuilt phone holder, and more study feeling break handles, like the image on the left below
        https://images.app.goo.gl/TLVGKqYw8UbmY2wt7

The older version either no phone support, or one they’d screwed onto the handle bar. They later attached seats to this model.

        • They are the Segway Ninebot Max Pro
They have a battery hatch and fatter stem. Tyres are solid rubber so no punctures

  • They are selling old model and not foldable one.

Maybe they are selling due to below news

if these where $99 it would be an instant buy for me

  • +4

Unless you can see the runtime, the KMs and test the battery health, its a gamble honestly.

    • Do you think they will go into receivership to avoid warranty?, since there will be no aftermarket service.

      • Do you think they will go into receivership to avoid warranty?, since there will be no aftermarket service.

I don't think they will do it to avoid the warranty, I think they will close down as there is no ongoing business there, which is why they are selling off their assets.

      • Leaving the market would be a better term they operate in South Korea and Turkey etc
Nothing stopping them putting them in a container and shipping them

  • They were on sale in westen aus too.

    https://www.facebook.com/share/8bN3pLDPQeuUEdpq/

  • These have been absolutely steamrolled by 13 year olds kicking it down the entire city.
    No battery replacement.
I wouldn't pay over $50 for one personally. Maybe not even that, after it craps out in 6 months it's a pain to throw away.

    • +1

Just leave it on the side of the road and pretend it’s a Beam they forgot to pick up.

  • +2

If anyone does purchase this, please share your experience here. I'm on the fence and looking for some anecdotes.

Bonus points if anyone tries riding it up College Hill

  • +1

If I was running Beam and had fraudulently introduced many more scooters than the company can operate in the future (if any), I would start by getting rid of older ones that had degraded battery capacity or other defects, and progressively reduce the price through time. As others have pointed out the warranty may turn out to be worthless in practice, at best you might get it swapped for a similar one

    [UPDATE]
I booked one and went for a 12pm pickup… noone there, a sign on the door saying "Beam Solo - Order please come back tomorrow, apologies for inconvenience". I see the next booking slot is now 30 Sep. Not sure if they're just buying time or if the whole thing is dodgy….

I've sent them an email asking whats going on and called their helpline who couldnt' help…. I'd proceed with extreme caution

    • Probably laying off employees so probably only one person doing all the solo stuff

    • My wife has just popped over to get one at the 2.30pm slot and was greeted with the same sign. I've also sent an email…. also concerned of being scammed.

    • In the facebook post in aus they stated they will get the next shipment at the end of sept.
I wouldnt pay until i see the item.

    • got information from someone, they are awaiting labels / stickers

    "Lovingly refurbished and rigorously tested"

Being someone who has done this for companies, I can translate.

I'm sure you will unsurprised to learn this mean " We
switch parts around so they don't look like complete shit. The. We plug them in. If they appear to charge we take it for a 10m ride. Safety test the charger. And we are "refurbished.""

    • You're right, it's typical Corpo marketing speak.
"Refurbish" doesn't even mean anything really; they could have just wiped it down with a cloth, and it's called "refurbished"; the definition of which is "to brighten or freshen up."

"Tested" - does it turn on? OK it's "tested to turn on".

  • Next pick up slot showing as 16th of October for me, for both Auckland and Wellington scooters.

    • Yes they are still preparing them due to high demand. My order is around then

  • price has gone up to 399
