Shoutout to Jellyfin, great free alternative to Plex.

    • I mean Plex is free too right? I assume Jellyfin has some paid subscription service which gives added features (like Plex Pass?)

      • I use JellyFin (and FinAmp on my phone) as well and it's excellent.

My understanding is that the mobile apps for Plex are charged, and you have to pay for internet streaming and better transcoding amongst other things.

Zero charges for anything JellyFin related, which meant I was able to install it on every TV in the house, my phone, my wifes phone, and friends/family devices with no drama, and I have a Tesla P4 for transcodes.

FinAmp meanwhile is just an audio interface for JellyFin and it has both streaming, and download/offline modes.

        • Would recommend checking out Symfonium on Android (and Yatse for video).

      • Jellyfin is completely free and open source.
Plex you have to pay for extras, haven't used Plex in ages though, made the switch to Jellyfin and never looked back.

Plex is essentially completely usable without their Plex Pass subscription.

It's mostly for unlocking advanced features for the most part, I ended up getting it for the hardware transcoding for the most part.

Although to be fair, Jellyfin has the advantage of all of that being free, I just found from my experience I preferred the ui/interface of Plex over Jellyfin, although that's more of a personal preference thing from my perspective, either way both Jellyfin and Plex are solid choices regardless.

Thanks! I finally purchased the lifetime pass after using Plex for over a decade (really should've done it sooner!).

Hardware accelerated streaming and the ability to automatically skip intros and credits in TV shows are the most useful features of the Plex Pass for me.

I tried Jellyfin for a time, but the Plex user interface is a much better experience so went back to it. There's also better device compatibility with Plex.

Just putting out there, Plex now also have Beta Photos app for your self hosted photo library if you want to get rid of google photos or similar. Though there is a catch right now of you can't upload (It will be available in future).

I have been using Plex since 2014 and have lifetime pass since 2016. And very happy with it, especially it's easy for family members to join and use my server.

Played with Jellyfin in the past, it is good but not that wide app support and I like plex UI better. Plus there are more integrations available in plex. Again, this all comes to personal preference. I might be bias as have been using it for a while, so you grow into it.

    • look at immich.

      • Using it already. Lol. Getting more and more self hosted services. Working on paperless-ngx and Kometa currently.

        • I run kometa/p.m.m. , have for some time use it to auto download things

          • @kiwijunglist: Nice. I got it working. Just playing with the config to make it as I want.

I got Plex pass last time and the one thing people don't seem to mention when considering it's value is Plexamp. I've fully ditched rotating through subscriptions to Spotify, YouTube etc. Finding new music and discovering new bands is more work but it's a hobby I enjoy.

They're scrapping support for the desktop music functionality in favour of pushing plexamp for music. I actually enjoy using Plexamp.

    • I've done the same honestly, I ended up exporting my Youtube Music library to Plex and it sucks not being able to discover music anymore, but it's worth saving like $20 each month on such a pointless service.
