    • Minoxidil
Last time I bought Minoxidil from Biovea. You can get a 12 month supply for $181.05 but they often do further discounts. This compares to Regaine that costs about $180 for 4 months supply (although they often have a $75 cashback promotion)

    • Finasteride
I just asked my docter to give me a script for it. You can either go with the 1mg tablets that cost about $30 for 1 months supply but it's much cheaper if you get the 5mg tablets. You'll need to cut these in quarter using a pill cutter. A 3 month supply (about 23 tablets) cost $13.
You'll need to factor in the doctors appointment and prescription fee (if any). I have it on a repeat script that costs $32 with my doctor to request every 3 months.

    • Get my stock up on Minoxidil whenever I visit AUS. Can usually pick up the 4 month Regaine foam (I tried the solution but it’s too oily/messy) for about $99AUD from CW (price beat other places).
I’ll get 3x of those boxes giving me a one year supply, along with meeting the threshold of claiming the TRS requirement for 10% back.

    • As for Finasteride, very similar to what @BlackLab said above regarding the 5mg prescription that you manually split into quarters. It costs $5 for a 3month prescription, which I order via CareHQ (free online GP if you have southern cross health insurance)

Thanks for the tip about CareHQ! I didn't know about that and have Southern Cross health insurance.

      • Thanks to you as well, I wasn’t aware about Biovea, have to look into that for Min, will be sure to use the referral :)

  • Do you use dermaroller? Or something similar to apply the liquid or just rub it on your bald patch?

I just use the (included) dropper to place the liquid near the roots and then use my fingers to rub it in. The foam is a bit easier as it doesn't drip off as easily but can be more expensive. My hair has definitely improved so it's harder to reach the roots with the foam due to all the hair :)

BTW - I first went to Ashley & Martin but they really just offer Minoxidil and Finasteride. They give you some extra vitamins, shampoo and conditioner and keep track of your progress but I figured I could do it a lot cheaper myself. (I think they were charging around $2k/year)

  • Is there any benefits of using just the finestride tablets as opposed to both it and Minoxidil

They do different things so work best when you use both.

Minoxidil helps promote new hair growth and it grows back thicker and fuller. However, as soon as you stop you will lose the hair so really need to use it regularly (twice daily). You also lose some hair when you first start using it but I think this is due to the new hair growing pushing out the existing hair (that was probably going to fall out anyway)

Finasteride helps stop hair loss and allows new hair to grow by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
