Recommendations on a dishwasher (and best time to buy them).

I’m looking for a dishwasher that’s super reliable (I don’t want to replace it within the next 8 years). A separate cutlery drawer would be a bonus, but it’s not a deal breaker. Any recommendations on available models, deals, or advice on when the best deals might come?

If you have the money Miele is usually a very solid choice.
End of line models usually have some wiggle room with little compromise

    • Yeah we got recommended a Miele by the plumber who called time of death on our old dishwasher. Its just a bit too expensive. Was hoping to spend under 1.5k

We loved our Miele in our last place, and will likely be replacing our current Westinghouse with another Miele in the coming months.

  • We have a Bosch and love it! Was just under 1k on a really good Boxing Day sale. We hand washed dishes for a month or 2 between dishwashers to wait for the sales and was about 30% off normal price iirc, so worth waiting!

    • Second the Bosch. Fantastic dishwashers that just keep going.

      • @CheapAsChipz @wildchild what model was it ? Series 4 or 6 ?

        • I cant remember sorry, can check when I get home! It does have a cutlery basket instead of tray which we prefer and find makes loading cutlery quicker and easier, as well as does a better job washing them.

        • Yeah, not sure either, and it's now in a rental so I can't easily check but it was an older model. Has a tray which I don't like as much, but that's the only thing and it's minor.

        • This one :) Series 2

        • go with a german made bosch. this is exactly what product engineers at f&p told me to go for standalone (f&p standalones aren't made by them, they only design the dishdraws). i took their advice and it is great.

  • Black Friday is less than two months away if you can wait that long. We've started a shopping list of non-urgent stuff that we're hoping to pick up deals on.

Had an 8 series Bosch with Zeolith and it was good, but only lasted 8 years. All the spares were available to fix it but it was going to cost too much at that point in it's life.

Replaced with a 6 series Bosch. Much cheaper but washes equally well, if not better than the 8 series. It doesn't have a full cutlery tray like the 8 but does have a small upper tray for knives etc which is all you need really.

My theory is the 8 series had just too many extraneous components that just increase the probability of it going wrong, so I think I'll stick with the mid range from now on.

    • good point ! thanks

I thought I wanted a top cutlery tray, but having had both the benefit isn't so clear cut now.

Even though the top drawer is height adustable in both the 6 and the 8, the top cutlery tray does restrict it a bit so it's not great if you have big plates or tall glasses.

The other thing I realized is that with a standard cutlery basket, you can just pull it out and place it on your counter to fill and unfill it.

So in a way a basket is more convenient than a cutlery drawer because you can do that without having to stoop down with handfuls of cutlery.

We bought one with a cutlery drawer, and we actually prefer the basket.
Found if you didnt place each piece in neatly they wouldnt clean well.

If your local to the harvey norman outlets, there are deals to be had there.
Think the Noel leeiming outlets are goneskies now though

    • Awesome , will have a look at the outlet place

I don't think you can go wrong with good old Fisher and Paykel. Love that parts and service is easily available locally if needed. Because it's a "New Zealand" brand. they are well supported and understood.

    • Ours dried very poorly, infact it didn't dry. I have and older F&P washing machine (one of the last to be made in NZ) and a new basic F&P fridge , but that is all I would buy of F&P I think. It's also now overseas owned and made.

  • Bosch for the win! I used to sell these at Hardly Normal and I can assure you they are the best value and rock on year after year!

    • recommendation on which model of Bosch ?

  • Our bosch (14 years) operates perfectly well apart from the two seal failures in the last year (at least it detected the internal leak). The repair guy advised we look to replace it soon, he says stainless steel Bosch would be the way to go. I need to also start my research there…

    • im told the series 6 Bosch is stainless steel and from Germany. Curious what model your 14yr old one was ?

        Its a SBV69T00AU
says made in germany. It's one with the kitchen cabinet material glued to the front, sitting under the island in the kitchen.

  • Another vote for Bosch. One thing I have noticed is majority of the new builds have Bosch, not really sure if it is because they are good or they are cheap or both.

    • recommendation on which model of Bosch ?

I think I have one of the lowest model from Bosch, series 2. But it works well. Previously had F&p in the rental which was not that great.

  • Bosch is the best, but if you want cheap and good, Euromaid is quite good.

    • recommendation on which model of Bosch ?

      • Haven't really kept up to date lately, but they're all about the same. The price goes up if you want things like quieter function, a few more features (like disinfection), a few more programs and place settings. Latest series usually cost a lot more than older series, but functionally similar.

  • Asko. Have been using for couple of years now.

  • I have a series 6 bosch, highly recommended!

  • Bosch series 6 and series 8, / German made Miele over 1520 /hot water in German made, LG quad wash (made in korea) wash and performance similar to Bosch with higher reliability . Others with long wash are ok quick wash is a miss

  • Have recently purchased Bosch Series 6 to replace a 20 year old Bosch dishwasher which was amazing , but we can’t seem to get the dishes clean even on 2 hour 40 minute cycles, any hints??

At the moment we end up hand washing before dishwasher and only half filling the dishwasher to get them clean.

Filter is cleaned every few weeks

    • What powder/sachet you using? The single dissolvable sachet is usually stronger and better at cleaning very resistant grim, but cost more. Powder is cheaper but usually isn't as good (but can clean most things on 90% of cases). If using powder, it's important to fill both the pre-wash and wash slot if you have them as the prewash cycle does the bulk of the dirty clean, then the wash cycle does a second clean. I can't be certain but I think the new Bosch doesn't have the pre-wash hole for some reason, you could also just sprinkle some powder anywhere in the dishwasher as well in addition to the wash cycle, which effectively does the same thing.

      • We are using Finish blue and white capsules , possibly a couple of years old from a cheapies deal. Have noticed when the capsule door opens it flips it into the small tray in front of the cups, and sometimes it hasn’t dissolved fully.

Some tablets come in plastic pouch which needs to be removed. Just double checking if you are not removing it. Secondly as mentioned above use some powder directly in the washer if there is no pre-wash compartment.

Also, try putting the tablet in the tray rather than in the capsule compartment and try it.

          • @ace310: It’s in a foil packet which we are removing

  • We have a Miele and the drawers inside began to rust. They have been replaced the drawers but the service guy actually recommended Bosch 6 series. Our previous dishwasher was a bosch, but was a lower basic stainless model and it was good and trays didn't rust after 12 years of use.
