Prepaid Sim Card

Hi all,

Coming from Aus to NZ for a week at the end of the month and I'm looking at getting a prepaid sim card that will cover my usage whilst in NZ. My current provider here in Aus (Woolworths Mobile) charges and arm and a leg for international roaming so looking at what the best options might be in NZ. We'll be visiting my SIL so I can have the Sim delivered to her address ready for when we arrive.

Here in OZ there are HEAPS of options to obtain a '1-off' cheap prepaid SIM with heaps of data and call/text options. Hoping NZ has something similar?

Any suggestions? TIA

  • Do you have a fixed address that you can get a sim card sent to? These are options if so:

Could otherwise just use a post office as a pickup point…

    • Yeah, I can use my SIL address if needed. The Kogan $5 starter pack might be the way to go. How is Kogan's network coverage in NZ? I am flying into Auckland and then heading out to Tauranga and then onto Mohaka. Thanks for sharing

      • +1

It's absolutely fine. Kogan uses the One (Vodafone) network in NZ. If you're in any of the major cities it'll even possibly be faster in cases than the Spark network. Small towns are mostly fine too, anything in the bush you're possibly better on the Spark network (but each location is different so hard to say definitively). I personally have used kogan for like 4 years and I have no complaints.

        • Good to know! Thank you. Well, I've bought the Kogan $5 started pack - shipped to my SIL address. Fingers crossed the coverage is okay. I notice it also comes with unlimited calls back to Australia?! Not bad!

          • @CrocDundee: Yep, can confirm that it works. Another bonus is MMS is free to send too, not that you'll probably need it in the week, but never know. You should be fine in any of the towns/cities.

I'd suggest downloading music or movies or what ever you need before you leave a town/city when travelling between. One thing that everyone forgets about NZ, it's not flat. You could have a hundred cell towers in an area, but you also have large hills/trees blocking the signal in between towns.

            • @Latex Fist: Great info! Thank you very much for the tip! Will make sure I do that.

  • You can buy a pre-paid sim from pretty much any provider here.

One Nz. Spark (with subsidiary Skinny Mobile). 2 Degrees. are the big ones and theres many others. NONE of them will be quite as good price wise as the Oz alternatives more than likely.

    • Yeah, I'm finding that the prices in NZ are not competitive compared to OZ. Was hoping to get around 20gb data (one month prepaid plan) for about $15 like Amaysim, Boost mobile over here. Can't find anything, unfortunately :/

      • show me the Australian network offering a fully unlimited (5G) package for $80 though…

        • I don't understand your question? fully unlimited in what - Data? Calls? If Data, most companies offer unlimited data, however, add in a speed-cap after you reach a certain limit. Telstra, Optus and all the other resellers offer this.

          • @CrocDundee: I did say 'fully' as in no speed restriction on data.

  • why bother with physical sim, get an e-sim through airalo, US4.50 7 days 1Gb, just data, no number, use whatsapp for voice calls

    • Unfortunately, my phone doesn't have eSim capabilities - Oppo X2 find pro. Would be so much easier if I did.

  • You can get 3 months free with Electric Kiwi, then cancel. Esim option for it. Free calls to Australia.
