Philips Essential SmartBright LED Downlight G2 10 Watt Warm White $7.50 @ Mitre 10 New Lynn

100

Shows as $20 on the web site https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/philips-essential-smartbright….
But spotted on clearance for $7.50 at the New Lynn store.

Warm white dimmable 10 watts.
Drop in replacement for 115mm rim 90mm cutout recessed lights. Just installed a couple and are much brighter than my old 60 watt e27. Dimming works fine.

At this price they aren't far from what you can pick up from AliExpress so not bad for a brand name sourced locally.

  • Any recommendations for replacing old downlights with a 125mm cut-out?

    • I bought a 4 pack of generic 3 colour downlights from Bunnings a while ago for one of the bedrooms. Work well.
With that said I am not the type that cares too much about Brand or CRI. They are bright, look like they are meant to be there and work…

      • I need to replace 40. That will "seal" the ceiling holes as on a windy day I can feel the cold air. Think prices vary but with this amount , looking at savings where I can.
Can install it myself so looking for a deal.

        • This is exactly my use case. In my case I have a whole collection of halogens and recessed of various diameters. In excess of 60 pieces throughout the house.
My go to is AliExpress. A halogen drop in replacement is usually under $3.5 a pop. I had one out of 10 fail in the first year.

I get notifications from a shop in Australia that occasionally drop 75% on their lights. Then you can get high quality high CRI for around $15 a pop. I have a relative to ship.

The simplest solution though is to go to Bunnings and get generic multipack.

In all cases you want to have spares as they will go bad and designs will vary over time…

  • My downlights need replacing. I’m a bit confused as to whether these will work with my setup though.

My downlights each have their own plug and socket in the ceiling (just like a regular plug that goes into a regular wall socket). Does anyone know if these will work, do they have a plug?

The hole size sounds right (90mm) and that link in the other comment says it is “to replace conventional downlight”. Any help much appreciated.

Yes it will work. It has a terminal block where an electrician would wire in the cable with a plug.
      Very similar to this https://hueblog.com/2024/07/03/philips-hue-slim-recessed-lig…

      • Good to know, thank you!

As per RockCartel. These have an external transformer with a three pin termination box. They are designed to be hard wired to the wire coming from the light switch.
You can of course connect a plug to that termination box but whether you are comfortable doing that or not…
Sounds like you're best bet would be to look for a light that comes pre wired with a plug. Then you don't need to work about calling an electrician.

      • Great info, thank you very much. I agree, will look for a cheap option that comes with a plug already attached

        • Just been to m10 and there was an HPM light with a plug. It is on the expensive side at $50-odd but you save on electrician.
I have installed a few spots from AliExpress. The latest 6 pack cost me $10 for the lot. But you need to be comfortable connecting wires and with the fact it is not kosher to do so yourself
