Why Are Freestanding Mirrors So Expensive?

I'm in the market for a freestanding mirror and the prices are more than double or triple of the door-hung mirrors, even though they're not that much bigger. Does anyone know why?

Take Kmart's mirrors for example, the freestanding one is $60 while the door-hung one is only $25. The freestanding mirror is not that much bigger than the door-hung mirror, but the price has more than doubled.

My guess is that the difference will come down to combination of glass thickness, backing material and/or framing for rigidity. Those wall mounted mirrors are extremely thin (3mm I think usually) and flimsy. Look at the specs and you'll see the $25 one weighs only 2.5kg(!), but when mounted to a wall or door strength doesn't matter.
A floor standing model needs to be much more robust, with a sturdy frame. The two top results at the link you provided weigh 12.6kg and 8.15kg - way more than the cheaper one.

    • Great comment, thanks!

  • if you're in chch there are weirdly cheap ones at pandamart in northwood.

The furniture there is shockingly cheap.

    • Thanks for the tip, there's a Panda Mart in Auckland too (Pakuranga Plaza). I'll have a look there.

  • Picked up a really nice freestanding mirror that was sold at kmart for $70 for only $20 off facebook, newish too
